Download or read book State of War written by Paul A. C. Koistinen and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2012-09-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his farewell speech, President Dwight Eisenhower famously warned us of the dangers of a military-industrial complex (MIC). In Paul Koistinen's sobering new book, that warning appears to have been both prophetic and largely ignored. As the final volume in his magisterial study of the political economy of American warfare, State of War describes the bipolar world that developed from the rivalry between the U.S. and USSR, showing how seventy years of defense spending have bred a monster that has sunk its claws into the very fabric of American life. Koistinen underscores how during the second half of the twentieth century and well into the twenty-first, the United States for the first time in its history began to maintain large military structures during peacetime. Many factors led to that result: the American economy stood practically alone in a war-ravaged world; the federal government, especially executive authority, was at the pinnacle of its powers; the military accumulated unprecedented influence over national security; and weaponry became much more sophisticated following World War II. Koistinen describes how the rise of the MIC was preceded by a gradual process of institutional adaptation and then supported and reinforced by the willing participation of Big Science and its industrial partners, the broader academic world, and a proliferation of think tanks. He also evaluates the effects of ongoing defense budgets within the context of the nation's economy since the 1950s. Over time, the MIC effectively blocked efforts to reduce expenditures, control the arms race, improve relations with adversaries, or adopt more enlightened policies toward the developing world-all the while manipulating the public on behalf of national security to sustain the warfare state. Now twenty years after the Soviet Union's demise, defense budgets are higher than at any time during the Cold War. As Koistinen observes, more than six decades of militaristic mobilization for stabilizing a turbulent world have firmly entrenched the state of war as a state of mind for our nation. Collectively, his five-volume opus provides an unparalleled analysis of the economics of America's wars from the colonial period to the present, illuminating its impact upon the nation's military campaigns, foreign policy, and domestic life.

Book International Conflicts 1816 2010

Download or read book International Conflicts 1816 2010 written by Douglas M. Gibler and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 1169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A militarized interstate dispute (MID) refers to international conflict short of war. The MID dataset from the Correlates of War Project catalogs summary data on all threats, displays, and uses of force between two or more states. These dispute data are essential in quantitative analyses of international conflict and other issues, such as diplomatic efforts and security policy. The problem however is that they offer little information barring a brief summary of the conflict event. This work remedies it by providing original, detailed narrative descriptions of what occurred in each case. Organized by rivalry and within geographic regions, these case descriptions, written specifically for this work, will be an essential resource for those interested in the causes, histories, and consequences of international conflicts.

Book A New Kind of War

  • Author : Howard Jones

Download or read book A New Kind of War written by Howard Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-05-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's experience in Greece has often been cited as a model by those later policymakers in Washington who regard the involvement as a "victory" for American foreign policy. Indeed, President Johnson and others referred to Greece as the model for America's deepening involvement in Vietnam during the mid-1960's. Greece became the battlefield for a new kind of war--one that included the use of guerrilla warfare, propaganda, war in the shadows, terror tactics and victory based on outlasting the enemy. It was also a test before the world of America's resolve to protect the principle of self-determination. Jones argues that American policy towards Greece was the focal point in the development of a global strategy designed to combat totalitarianism. He also argues that had the White House and others drawn the real "lessons" from the intervention in Greece, the decisions regarding Vietnam might have been more carefully thought out.

Book The Annotated Old Four Legs The story of the coelacanth

This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the famous South African fish scientist Professor JLB Smith published Old Fourlegs – The Story of the Coelacanth in 1956 he created an international sensation. After all, this 400-million-year-old fish, known only from fossil remains, was thought to have become extinct around 66 million years ago! JLB Smith’s dramatic account of the discovery of the first and second coelacanths in 1938 and 1952 turned him into a cult figure and put South African science on the world map. His book was eventually published in six English editions and translated into nine foreign languages. Mike Bruton’s The Annotated Old Fourlegs includes a facsimile reprint of the original book, to which he has added notes and images in the margins that provide an interesting and revealing commentary on Smith’s text, as well as new introductory and explanatory chapters that bring the coelacanth story up to date.

Book Caring for the Chronically Ill

Download or read book Caring for the Chronically Ill written by Janna L. Dieckmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. When human populations and their needs change, organizations responsible for their care inevitably react. With the rapidly and significantly increased demand for chronic care at mid-twentieth century, solutions deemed satisfactory in the past were entirely inadequate. Thus, community leaders and politicians began promoting several approaches to long-term care services in the two decades between 1945 and 1965, but without an adequate source of financing to establish an effective system. In contrast to acute care services and despite the need, chronic care remained unavailable and of poor quality. This study consists of six chapters: an introduction and conclusion, along with four case studies that examine in detail the development of a long-term care system in Philadelphia between 1945 and 1965.

Book excerpt: The rise, fall, and rebirth of Richard Nixon is perhaps the most fascinating story in American politics—and perhaps the most misunderstood. Nixon: A Life is the first entirely objective biography of Richard Nixon. Former British Defense Minister Jonathan Aitken conducted over sixty hours of interviews with the impeached former president and was granted unprecedented access to thousands of pages of Nixon’s previously sealed private documents. Nixon reveals to Aitken why he didn’t burn the Watergate tapes, how he felt when he resigned the presidency, his driving spiritual beliefs, and more. Nixon: A Life breaks important new ground as a major work of political biography, inspiring historians to recognize the outstanding diplomatic achievements of a man whose journey from tainted politician to respected foreign policy expert and elder statesman was nothing short of remarkable.
