Book Avoiding Dark Corners

Download or read book Avoiding Dark Corners written by Ali Alichi and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fed has taken several steps towards strengthening its monetary framework over the past several years. Those steps have supported the Fed’s efforts to stimulate the economy through forward guidance despite being constrained by having policy rates at zero. We show that an optimal control approach to monetary policy, which includes the publication of a baseline forecast and a description of the uncertainties around that outlook, combined with an improvement in the Fed’s communications toolkit, could further enhance the effectiveness of Fed policy. In the current conjuncture, such a risk management approach to monetary policy would result in both a later liftoff of policy rates and a modest, but planned, overshooting of inflation.

Book Emerging Europe and the Great Recession

Download or read book Emerging Europe and the Great Recession written by Daniel Dăianu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume adds to the existing literature on the Great Recession and the variety of current troubles in the European Union by providing the views of someone who has been in the trenches at national and international levels and who has extensive policy and academic experience. Furthermore, it deals, inter alia, with issues of huge importance such as “North-South” and “East-West” cleavages in the EU, problems in the Eurozone, the diminishing resilience of systems, and the rise of a “New Protectionism”. The book voices concerns and dilemmas from the perspective of new EU Member States in a period of “radical uncertainty” and painful policy trade-offs. Its underlying paradigm is that markets are essential for entrepreneurship and economic dynamism, but that market failures and global finance can cause a lot of misery in society unless they are reined in. This volume will be of interest to all those looking for insights into the challenges that the EU, the Eurozone, and emerging European economies have faced during the past decade and on what may lie ahead. Its target audience is policy-making and business circles, academia, research outfits, and NGOs.

Book The Challenge of Economic Rebalancing in Europe

Download or read book The Challenge of Economic Rebalancing in Europe written by Ewald Nowotny and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the long aftermath of the acute global financial crisis of 2008/09, “rebalancing” the economy with new sources of growth and productivity remains a persistent necessity. This book addresses the resulting trade-offs and challenges. These needs, and the corresponding policy challenges, are especially prevalent in Europe, in particular Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. On this issue, this book contributes lessons learned from earlier balance sheet recessions. It also addresses the often overlooked link between macroeconomic imbalances and economic inequality. Further contributions focus on the interaction between monetary policy and financial stability, adding a regional perspective to these important issues.

Download or read book Australia written by International Monetary Fund. Asia and Pacific Dept and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper examines the adjustment of Australian labor markets to the recent adverse shocks. Australia’s labor markets were not severely impacted by the global financial crisis and are adjusting smoothly to the sizeable commodity prices bust and mining investment downturn. However, some labor market indicators suggest persistent weaknesses. There does not appear to be a significant increase in structural employment in the wake of the commodity prices bust and mining investment decline. Increased flexibility in average hours per worker has likely moderated employment reduction in downturns and prevented a larger increase in unemployment in the wake of the mining investment downturn. At the same time, elevated underemployment signals additional slack, and is likely weighing down wage growth.
