Book excerpt: We've become dangerous... Our city is divided. Not just by the river that separates poor from rich, but by a government who throws away people who are not good enough. We're Avoidables, a race of people who have been shunned, judged and persecuted for the way we look and the rare gifts we have. We're ready for justice, we're ready for war. We're ready to seek vengeance for lifetimes of hatred. We've become dangerous. And, yet, a small glimmer of hope arrives in the form of angels. Integrating themselves into the government, they're working to bring the city under control. They claim that love conquers all, but after hundreds of years of neglect, the Avoidables battle to find their love story. Until now. This is the complete Avoidables series. Book Global criteria to address problematic unnecessary and avoidable plastic products

Download or read book Global criteria to address problematic unnecessary and avoidable plastic products written by Raubenheimer, Karen and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2024-508/ This report provides potential criteria to address problematic, unnecessary and avoidable plastic products at the global level, supporting the objectives of the upcoming international plastics instrument as per UNEA Resolution 5/14. The report notes that over 140 countries have enacted bans or restrictions on specific plastic products, highlighting the need for global criteria to manage not just single-use plastics, but also a wider range of plastic products. It presents possible criteria for determining plastic products into three distinct classifications - problematic, unnecessary, and avoidable – each subject to specific control measures. The report's ultimate aim is to phase out these plastic products through removal, substitution and redesign. A strong science-policy interface is needed to ensure informed listing of these plastic products under the instrument.

Book Predictable and Avoidable

Download or read book Predictable and Avoidable written by Ivo Pezzuto and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been said and written about the 'financial tsunami' and subsequent economic dislocation that occurred in the opening decade of the 21st Century. Professor Ivo Pezzuto is described by business scholars as an expert on the global financial crisis. He has lectured about it at conferences and seminars; written some of the most read and quoted papers; contributed to what is considered the most authoritative book on the subject; and to one of the best known US-based blogs dealing with it. In Predictable and Avoidable, Dr Pezzuto offers business school students; academics; and industry experts in the fields of finance, risk management, audit, corporate governance, economics, and regulation, a truly independent and unbiased analysis of the financial crises starting in 2007 and one of the first fully considered expositions of the financial, governance and regulatory reforms needed for the future. Augmented with personal interviews involving selected global thought leaders and industry experts, the author's narrative focuses on the technical issues that led to the global crisis, but also addresses the human, cultural, and ethical aspects of the events from both sociological and managerial perspectives. The book exposes the root causes and contributes significantly to the debate about the change needed in the banking and finance industries and to supervisory frameworks and regulatory mechanisms. This analysis enables readers to understand that the crisis we have seen was predictable and should have been avoidable, and that a recurrence can be avoided, if lessons are learned and the right action taken.

Download or read book Avoidable Deaths written by Nibedita S. Ray-Bennett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the most fundamental questions of the 21st century: why deaths continue to occur in natural disasters despite the tremendous advancements in disaster management science and weather forecasting systems, increased sophistication of human-built environments and ongoing economic and policy development worldwide. By presenting an interdisciplinary tool for analysing ‘systems failure’, the book provides concrete suggestions on how deaths may be reduced in resource-poor contexts. It goes beyond traditional risk and vulnerability perspectives and demonstrates that deaths in disasters are complex problems that can be solved by adopting a socio-technical perspective to improve current disaster management systems in the developing world. The book is a timely contribution, as it directly addresses Global Target One of the UN’s ‘Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction’, which has urged 185 UN Member States to reduce disaster mortality by 2030. Further, it offers a valuable resource for students, researchers, policy-makers and practitioners interested in disaster risk reduction, human rights, gender, sociology of risk, crisis and disasters, environmental science, organisation and management studies.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the research results obtained by Grupo de Equidad en Salud (Health Equity Group), in relation to the development of an indicator of inequity in avoidable mortality, consisting of a methodology that allows knowing, in a consolidated way, the state of the inequality in avoidable mortality based on the variants included in the development of the indicator itself; also, an analysis of global and local data allows realistically understanding the dimension of the problem in both contexts. This book provides additional elements of analysis in order to assess the inadequate role of health systems in solving the most sensitive problems affecting vulnerable populations. On the other hand, conceptual elements around the issue of inequity, as well as the results of a systematic review of the literature related to the different ways of measuring disparities, gaps or inequities in health, are presented here to help the reader approach the development of new conceptual or measurement proposals. This book is intended to contribute to the understanding of the issue, and to encourage joint solutions to avoidable problems of high social cost.

Book The avoidable war

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Kenneth Brody

  • Release :
  • ISBN : 9781412817769
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book The avoidable war written by J. Kenneth Brody and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As historian Gordon Craig has observed, "Americans are deeply ambivalent about history, choosing instead to follow the imperative of moral absolutes; they are uncomfortable with the idea of national interest as a guiding principle of policy, preferring motivations that are nobler." What does the national interest require? What does morality command? These issues bedevil us in Bosnia and Rwanda today as they did yesterday in the Persian Gulf and in Somalia. Such questions were fully played out in the era that led up to the dominant event of our century, the Second World War. The Avoidable War details how the war, its destruction, and its consequences could have been avoided. This original interpretation of history also provides insights into ways of preserving peace that can guide contemporary diplomacy. J. Kenneth Brody describes an incomparable galley of characters: a chief villain, Hitler; a thoughtful, conflicted, and human Mussolini; a fatuous Ramsey MacDonald; an uncharacteristically silent William Churchill; a smaller than life Stanley Baldwin. Above all, he rescues from undeserved obscurity the noble and inspiring figure of Lord Robert Cecil providing a thorough, controversial reappraisal and sympathetic portrait of Pierre Laval, his policy, and his character. Brody is the first to tell the story of the Peace Ballot, the first modern public opinion poll, created by Cecil in 1935. In this privately organized referendum on issues of war and peace, the British voted overwhelmingly in support of disarmament and morality rather than the national interest. Unfortunately its results helped bring on the war they worked so hard to avoid as, instructed by the Peace Ballot, the British met brute force with arms limitations proposals, the love of peace, and exalted ideals. Under cover of those ideals they betrayed a trusting ally, France. In doing so, they reaped a whirlwind of wartime consequences. The first of a two-volume series sheds new and original light on the origins of the Second World War. It is a study of both modern British history and a period of French history usually consigned to darkness. It also explores the role of morality in policymaking. This is a very human story of the passionate devotion to peace and justice of the proponents of the Peace Ballot and their supporters, and of the paradoxical and perverse result they achieved.
