Book excerpt: "AVID" ("Advancement Via Individual Determination") is a college-readiness program whose primary goal is to prepare middle and high school students for enrollment in four-year colleges through increased access to and support in advanced courses. The program, which focuses on underserved, middle-achieving students (defined as students earning B, C, and even D grades), places students in college preparatory classes (e.g., honors and Advancement Placement classes) while providing academic support through a daily elective period and ongoing tutorials. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviewed 66 studies on "AVID" for adolescent learners. One of these studies meets WWC evidence standards with reservations; the remaining 65 studies do not meet either WWC evidence standards or eligibility screens. Based on one study, the WWC found no discernible effects on comprehension for adolescent learners. The conclusions presented in this report may change as new research emerges. Appendices include: (1) Study characteristics: Rorie, 2007; (2) Outcome measure for the comprehension domain; (3) Summary of study findings included in the rating for the comprehension domain; (4) "AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)" rating for the comprehension domain; and (5) Extent of evidence by domain. Book excerpt: This evaluation examined the implementation and effectiveness of the AVID program in middle schools throughout the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS). Survey results and school visits revealed considerable inconsistencies in implementation across schools. Specifically, selection criteria were not consistently understood and applied, all staff members implementing the program were not able to attend AVID training, and some schools emphasized enrollment in Algebra I in eighth grade more than others as a desired outcome of AVID participation. Attrition from the program was high, with 38% of those enrolled in grade 6 in 2005-06 continuing with the program through grade 8 in 2007-08. The stated goal of having all AVID students enroll in Algebra I by grade 8 was not met, although a higher percentage of AVID students in grade 8 enrolled in Algebra I than was true systemwide (50% vs. 28%). The following appendices are included: (1) Review of Relevant Literature; (2) Survey Taken by AVID Coordinators; and (3) Survey Taken by AVID Elective Class Teachers.

Book excerpt: The problems commonly associated with inner-city schools were not nearly as pervasive a century ago, when black children in most northern cities attended school alongside white children. In Schools Betrayed, her innovative history of race and urban education, Kathryn M. Neckerman tells the story of how and why these schools came to serve black children so much worse than their white counterparts. Focusing on Chicago public schools between 1900 and 1960, Neckerman compares the circumstances of blacks and white immigrants, groups that had similarly little wealth and status yet came to gain vastly different benefits from their education. Their divergent educational outcomes, she contends, stemmed from Chicago officials’ decision to deal with rising African American migration by segregating schools and denying black students equal resources. And it deepened, she shows, because of techniques for managing academic failure that only reinforced inequality. Ultimately, these tactics eroded the legitimacy of the schools in Chicago’s black community, leaving educators unable to help their most disadvantaged students. Schools Betrayed will be required reading for anyone who cares about urban education.
