Book excerpt: The turbulent diffusion process in air was studied by measuring temperatures as a function of position in the wake of an electrically heated wire stretched across a round pipe. The Reynolds number based on the three-inch diameter of the pipe was ten thousand. Traverses were made behind a 0.0126-inch diameter wire at distances ranging from 0.10 inch to 18 inches. The time average temperature profiles and the mean-square fluctuating temperature profiles were measured by single resistance thermometers; and mean fluctuating temperature products by two resistance thermometers separated by from 0.026 to 0.608 inches. The data were compared to Taylor's single-particle diffusion theory; to Batchelor's particle-pair and particle-cloud diffusion theory; to Townsend's analysis of diffusion from a line source in homogeneous turbulence; and to smooth and rough wandering plume models. A structural function (after Obukhov) was also calculated. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermosonde data reveals a diurnal daytime shift in measured levels of C square (n) in the free atmosphere. The shift is manifested in two ways. First, an apparent offset in the smallest measured values of C square (n) exists. Secondly, the curve of the average profile shows an enhancement over nighttime profiles. Related optical and radar measurements have indicated that differences between day and night probably exist, but because of limited instrumental resolution and altitude capabilities those results are inconclusive. Several hypotheses have been put forward in this paper concerning possible instrumental or solar based sources of data contamination. We have examined the possibility that solar radiation causes probe heating with subsequent instrumental effects. Calculation, computer simulation, and direct measurements have shown that the sun heats the body of the probe sensor a couple of degrees above the ambient and that the level of heating depends upon the solar aspect angle and magnitude and direction of air flow over the probe. A small but insignificant AC type effect can result from improper probe geometry or probe mismatch together with a coupling of solar heating with velocity turbulence. Transient and DC type effects can occur, but measured, processed, and transmitted root mean square C square (n) information is not likely to contain instrumental contamination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is presented of a research program aimed at the improvement of high-temperature strain gages of the electrical resistance type. Potential ceramic and metal components were evaluated and a gage was devised that was based on these evaluations. This gage (NBS 5B) was flexible and easy to install; however, it lacked resistance stability at higher temperatures. In an attempt to minimize this deficiency, ceramic cements were developed that showed greater electrical resistivity than had been previously observed in the range 800 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; also, a technique was devised for increasing the resistance to ground by applying a fired-on ceramic coating to the grid of a specifically developed unbacked gage. A study was made of the cause of the erratic response of cemented gages that had not been preheated prior to use. There were strong indications that the erratic response was caused mostly by the rapid decrease in resistance that accompanied structural changes in the cement.
