Download or read book Ecclesiastical Lordship Seigneurial Power and the Commercialization of Milling in Medieval England written by Adam Lucas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed study of the role of the Church in the commercialization of milling in medieval England. Focusing on the period from the late eleventh to the mid sixteenth centuries, it examines the estate management practices of more than thirty English religious houses founded by the Benedictines, Cistercians, Augustinians and other minor orders, with an emphasis on the role played by mills and milling in the establishment and development of a range of different sized episcopal and conventual foundations. Contrary to the views espoused by a number of prominent historians of technology since the 1930s, the book demonstrates that patterns of mill acquisition, innovation and exploitation were shaped not only by the size, wealth and distribution of a house’s estates, but also by environmental and demographic factors, changing cultural attitudes and legal conventions, prevailing and emergent technical traditions, the personal relations of a house with its patrons, tenants, servants and neighbours, and the entrepreneurial and administrative flair of bishops, abbots, priors and other ecclesiastical officials.

Book excerpt: Revive your inner period cook and master the art of gode cookery with thirty-five recipes celebrating festivals throughout the year! Fancy a leap back in time to the kitchens in the Middle Ages, where cauldrons bubbled over hearths, whole oxen were roasted over spits, and common cooking ingredients included verjuice, barley, peafowl, frumenty, and elder flowers? You, too, can learn the art of gode cookery—or, at least, come close to it. With gorgeous and whimsical hand-drawn illustrations from beginning to end, A Thyme and Place is both a cookbook and a history for foodies and history buffs alike. Cohen and Graves revive old original medieval recipes and reimagine and modify them to suit modern palates and tastes. Each recipe is tied directly to a specific calendar holiday and feast so you can learn to cook: • Summer harvest wine with elder flower, apples, and pears for St. John’s Day (June 21st) • Right-as-rain apple cake for St. Swithin’s Day (July 15th) • Wee Matilda’s big pig fried pork balls with sage for Pig Face Day (September 14th) • Roasted goose with fig glaze and bannock stuffing for Michaelmas (September 29th) • Peasant duck ravioli and last of the harvest chutney for Martinmas (November 11th) • And many more! Accompanied by juicy fun facts and tidbits, these recipes will revive your inner period cook and allow you to impress your guests with obscure medieval knowledge. Download or read book Religion and Society in a Cotswold Vale written by Albion M. Urdank and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the English Industrial Revolution, the Vale of Nailsworth was a rural-industrial settlement and a center of evangelical Nonconformity. Why did the transition to the factory system bring deindustrialization and social decline rather than long-term advancement? Albion Urdank investigates the modernization of Nailsworth from many perspectives, revealing the experience and the mentalité of ordinary people in their ecological, economic, and social environments. His innovative approach, in the tradition of the Leicester and Annales schools, contributes to the historical literature on popular religion, secularization, local history, and European industrialization, and will appeal to a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary interests. This book was released on 1982-07-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English estates of the Abbey of Holy Trinity, Caen included manors situated in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, East Anglia, and Wiltshire, which differed greatly in economic organisation and social structure. Among the records of estate administration are surveys describing the rents and services of tenants, the resources of the demesne, and the advance of cultivation in woodland and waste. The present volume contains surveys for the whole estate made in the reigns of Henry I and Henry II, thirteenth century custumals for Minchinhampton, Avening, and Felsted, and twenty-six charters and leases, some of which relate to property in London. They provide valuable evidence of social conditions and changing methods of estate exploitation, and are printed for the first time.
