Book The Business of Watercolour

Download or read book The Business of Watercolour written by Simon Fenwick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume will revolutionise the study of watercolour painting in Britain. The Royal Watercolour Society archive constitutes a major academic resource covering two hundred years of the history of watercolour painting in Britain. The rediscovery in 1980 of ‘the Jenkins Papers’, the early records of the Society, was a major find for the history of British art. The archives are substantial and remarkably comprehensive. Minutes of annual general meetings, Council and committees, are all intact; extraordinarily, the Society’s catalogues for its own exhibitions have also survived, with details of who bought the pictures and for how much. It contains biographical information on several hundred artists who practised throughout the United Kingdom from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day. Prepared by the archivist to the RWS, Simon Fenwick, this is not just a work of reference, but an absorbing book to dip into again and again. The Society of Painters in Water Colours, as it was then titled, was founded in 1804 to promote the interests of painters using watercolour and to provide a platform for members to sell their work. As such, its archives provide an excellent insight into the evolving debate on the status of the artists and their medium, and an authoritative account of the way in which watercolour paintings were sold, distributed and acquired. The substantial introduction by Greg Smith surveys some of the purposes and practices of watercolour from 1750 to the present day and highlights key issues, many yet to be examined, relating to the study of watercolour. His survey is arranged around a number of topics including the notion of watercolour as a British art, collecting and display, book illustration, architectural drawing, map-making and topography, antiquarian studies, decorative arts, printmaking, portrait miniatures and drawings, amateur practices and the changing status of the sketch.

Book Landscape Art and Identity in 1950s Britain

Download or read book Landscape Art and Identity in 1950s Britain written by Catherine Jolivette and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years following World War II debates about the British landscape fused with questions of national identity as the country reconstructed its sense of self. For better or for worse artists, statesmen, and ordinary citizens saw themselves reflected in the landscape, and in turn helped to shape the way that others envisioned the land. While landscape art is frequently imagined in terms of painting, this book examines the role of landscape in terms of a broader definition of visual culture to include the discussion not only of works of oil on canvas, but also prints, sculpture, photography, advertising, fashion journalism, artists' biographies, and the multi-media stage of the national exhibition. Making extensive use of archival materials (newspaper reviews, radio broadcasts, interviews with artists, letters and exhibition planning documents), Catherine Jolivette explores the intersection of landscape art with a variety of discourses including the role of women in contemporary society, the status of immigrant artists in Britain, developments in science and technology, and the promotion of British art and culture abroad.

Download or read book Making the Unknown Known written by Victoria H. Cummins and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Making the Unknown Known, leading scholars throughout Texas explore the significant role women artists played in developing early Texas art from the nineteenth century through the latter part of the twentieth century. The biographies presented here allow readers to compare these women’s experiences across time as they negotiated the gendered expectations about artists in society at large and the Texas art community itself. Surveying the contributions women made to the visual arts in the Lone Star state, Making the Unknown Known analyzes women’s artistic work with respect to geographic and historical connections. Including surveys of the work of artists such as Louise Wüste, Emma Richardson Cherry, Eleanor Onderdonk, Grace Spaulding John, and others, it offers a groundbreaking assessment of the role women artists have played in interpreting the meaning, history, heritage, and unique character of Texas. It places women artists within the larger social and cultural contexts in which they lived. In that regard, it contains an analysis of their varied styles of art, the media they employed, and the subject matter contained in their art. It thus evaluates the contributions made by women artists to defining the nature of the wider Texas experience as an American region. Beautifully illustrated throughout with rich, full-color reproductions of the works created by the artists, this volume provides an enriched understanding of the important but underappreciated role women artists have played in the development of the fine arts in Texas. At last, the unknown story can be known.

Book Helen Frankenthaler

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alison Rowley
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2007-10-24
  • ISBN : 0857713205
  • Pages : 183 pages

Download or read book Helen Frankenthaler written by Alison Rowley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary examination of the work of 'colour field' painter Helen Frankenthaler overturns assumptions about the artist, whose work has been burdened by its label as 'the bridge between Pollock and what was possible'. Trained as a painter, Alison Rowley brings a keen eye to Frankenthaler's paintings, returning to the fore the artist's debt not only to Jackson Pollock but also to Cezanne, and speculating for the first time as to her artistic responses to wider political events, in particular the Rosenberg trial. Making a fascinating case, too, for the connections between the 'breakthrough' work 'Mountains and Sea' and Lily Briscoe's painting in Virginia Woolf's novel 'To the Lighthouse', this beautifully written book provides crucial new insights into Frankenthaler's practice, as a painter who is also a woman.
