Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From technologist and strategist Brian Evergreen, a bold new agenda for the role of organizational leaders in creating a more human future with technology Social good initiatives are incompatible with the current network of systems that make up and support the private and public sectors. Millions of dollars have been invested in bringing leaders together from organizations around the world to design solutions for global challenges such as the climate crisis, child labor, racism, war, and many more. Despite executive buy-in, alignment of core capabilities and resources, passionate leadership, and well-designed strategies, these initiatives inevitably fail (with a few, notable exceptions). The dawn of the Internet ignited a global redesign and rebuild of the interlocking systems that make up and support the private and public sectors today. The era of Digital Transformation extended this further through the adoption of cloud technologies and distributed computing. With a recent wave of technological advancements, organizations have arrived at another global redesign and rebuilding of the network of systems that make up society: Autonomous Transformation, revealing an opportunity for leaders to create Profitable Good through systemic design in combination with emerging autonomous technologies and surprising and remarkable partnerships. Autonomous Transformation provides a blueprint for leaders and managers who have aspired or attempted to harness artificial intelligence and its adjacent technologies for the betterment of their organization and the world, weaving strategy, business, economics, systemic design, and philosophy into four actionable steps with accompanying frameworks: Clear the Digital Fog See the Systems Choose a Problem Future Design Inevitability

Book excerpt: Transportation Transformation is an indispensable GPS for every automaker, transportation startup, investor, policymaker, or regulator who is planning the future of urban and suburban transit, and anyone else with a need to understand the changing ways in which consumers and goods will get around. When an industry this large changes this rapidly, strategy becomes complex and challenging. Transportation Transformation provides the crucial vision necessary to navigate those changes with confidence. Comprehensive, global, and meticulously researched, Transportation Transformation presents a vision of next-generation urban mobility arising from the interplay among three major groups: the automakers, the mobility services companies, and the cities. Transportation's future is subject to consumer shifts, driven by disruptive technology and business model innovations including autonomous or automated, connected, and electrified vehicles; on-demand mobility services, such as ride-hailing and micromobility; and rapidly multiplying new ways to deliver consumer transportation and goods. The book describes the transformations that automakers, mobility services companies, and cities must undertake, the new value chains that will form as a result of these transformations, and the business models that will enable the transformed organizations to monetize or otherwise benefit from next-generation mobility. Transportation Transformation details the central role of data, AI and other data-driven technologies in next-generation mobility and explains the key risks we must address in the process of transforming transportation. Even as traditional models of vehicle acquisition and ownership weaken, new business models are emerging, including subscription-, merchandising-, and advertising-based revenue streams. Such innovations will remake the staid and traditional value chains that dominate today's transportation markets and create new ones. Transportation Transformation discusses these new models under a variety of implementation scenarios involving automakers, Tier 1 suppliers, mobility services companies, and Internet technology providers. It analyzes the resulting new revenue streams and the value chains that will remake the economics of the automobile industry as well as the broader transportation and goods delivery industries. And it discusses in revealing detail the opportunities and risks ushered in by these shifts and disruptions.

Book Embedded Autonomy

  • Author : Peter B. Evans
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2012-01-12
  • ISBN : 9781400821723
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Embedded Autonomy written by Peter B. Evans and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, debate on the state's economic role has too often devolved into diatribes against intervention. Peter Evans questions such simplistic views, offering a new vision of why state involvement works in some cases and produces disasters in others. To illustrate, he looks at how state agencies, local entrepreneurs, and transnational corporations shaped the emergence of computer industries in Brazil, India, and Korea during the seventies and eighties. Evans starts with the idea that states vary in the way they are organized and tied to society. In some nations, like Zaire, the state is predatory, ruthlessly extracting and providing nothing of value in return. In others, like Korea, it is developmental, promoting industrial transformation. In still others, like Brazil and India, it is in between, sometimes helping, sometimes hindering. Evans's years of comparative research on the successes and failures of state involvement in the process of industrialization have here been crafted into a persuasive and entertaining work, which demonstrates that successful state action requires an understanding of its own limits, a realistic relationship to the global economy, and the combination of coherent internal organization and close links to society that Evans called "embedded autonomy."

Book The Autonomous Revolution

Download or read book The Autonomous Revolution written by William Davidow and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are at the dawn of the Autonomous Revolution, a technological revolution as decisive as the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. Autonomous machines are capable of learning and adapting faster than humans and entirely on their own. And for the first time in human history we no longer require physical locations to work, play, shop, socialize, or be entertained. William Davidow and Michael Malone, authors of the seminal book The Virtual Corporation, explore the enormous implications of these developments. They show why increases in productivity no longer translate into increases in the GDP, how invisible algorithms control what you see and hear, and much more. Many of the book's recommendations—such as monetizing internet usage and making companies pay for personal information—are likely to be controversial, but this debate needs to begin now, before the Autonomous Revolution overcomes us.

Book Continuous Symmetries and Integrability of Discrete Equations

Download or read book Continuous Symmetries and Integrability of Discrete Equations written by Decio Levi and published by American Mathematical Society, Centre de Recherches Mathématiques. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on integrable systems and symmetries presents new results on applications of symmetries and integrability techniques to the case of equations defined on the lattice. This relatively new field has many applications, for example, in describing the evolution of crystals and molecular systems defined on lattices, and in finding numerical approximations for differential equations preserving their symmetries. The book contains three chapters and five appendices. The first chapter is an introduction to the general ideas about symmetries, lattices, differential difference and partial difference equations and Lie point symmetries defined on them. Chapter 2 deals with integrable and linearizable systems in two dimensions. The authors start from the prototype of integrable and linearizable partial differential equations, the Korteweg de Vries and the Burgers equations. Then they consider the best known integrable differential difference and partial difference equations. Chapter 3 considers generalized symmetries and conserved densities as integrability criteria. The appendices provide details which may help the readers' understanding of the subjects presented in Chapters 2 and 3. This book is written for PhD students and early researchers, both in theoretical physics and in applied mathematics, who are interested in the study of symmetries and integrability of difference equations.

Book Autonomous Vehicles

Download or read book Autonomous Vehicles written by Clifford Winston and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better public policies can make the road smoother for self-driving vehicles and the society that soon will depend on them. Whether you find the idea of autonomous vehicles to be exciting or frightening, the truth is that they will soon become a significant everyday presence on streets and highways—not just a novel experiment attracting attention or giggles and sparking fears of runaway self-driving cars. The emergence of these vehicles represents a watershed moment in the history of transportation. If properly encouraged, this innovation promises not only to vastly improve road travel and generate huge benefits to travelers and businesses, but to also benefit the entire economy by reducing congestion and virtually eliminating vehicle accidents. The impacts of autonomous vehicles on land use, employment, and public finance are likely to be mixed. But widely assumed negative effects are generally overstated because they ignore plausible adjustments by the public and policymakers that could ameliorate them. This book by two transportation experts argues that policy analysts can play an important and constructive role in identifying and analyzing important policy issues and necessary steps to ease the advent of autonomous vehicles. Among the actions that governments must take are creating a framework for vehicle testing, making appropriate investments in the technology of highway networks to facilitate communication involving autonomous vehicles, and reforming pricing and investment policies to enable operation of autonomous vehicles to be safe and efficient. The authors argue that policymakers at all levels of government must address these and other issues sooner rather than later. Prompt and effective actions outlined in this book are necessary to ensure that autonomous vehicles will be safe and efficient when the public begins to adopt them as replacements for current vehicles.
