Book Composite Materials Processing Using Microwave Heating Technology

Download or read book Composite Materials Processing Using Microwave Heating Technology written by Manoj Kumar Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-09-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers all aspects of composite materials processing and manufacturing using microwave heating technology and their applications in various industrial processes. Depending in the processing and material used, the composites are divided into three major segments: Metal matrix composites (MMCS), ceramics composites (CMCS), and polymer matrix composites (PMCS), respectively. During the manufacturing process of these composite materials, conventional heating technologies are used in which the heat is transferred from the electrical resistance coils to the material via conventional modes of heat transfer. Issues like non-uniform temperature distribution, poor curing efficiency, generation of the in-process scarp, long process cycle, high energy consumption and cost make traditional manufacturing route a difficult choice to select. Recently, microwave-assisted heating has emerged as a promising route for the fabrication of composites as a cost-effective environmentally sustainablemanufacturing process that yields improved mechanical properties which is the main topic of this book. It looks into the mechanism, salient features, and important aspects of microwave heating and their interaction with different composites materials. It also presents other manufacturing processes of various composites using microwave heating during casting, drilling, recycling, sintering, material joining, surface engineering. This book will appeal to students, researchers and scientists working in the area of composite materials processing and manufacturing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microwaves can be effectively used in the processing of industrial materials under a wide range of conditions. However, microwave processing is complex and multidisciplinary in nature, and a high degree of technical knowledge is needed to determine how, when, and where the technology can be most profitably utilized. This book assesses the potential of microwave technology for industrial applications, reviews the latest equipment and processing methods, and identifies both the gaps in understanding of microwave processing technology and the promising development opportunities that take advantage of this new technology's unique performance characteristics.

This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many individual technological solutions for microwave applications in industries have been developed without a clear pattern for a key strategy to replace conventional industrial technologies. In this work, the author shows how a modular microwave system line for very homogenous microwave fields is originated. "Energy Efficient Microwave Technologies" is designed for engineers and scientists from industry and academic research. The number of applications of this new technology is enormous: In this book, applications in the avionic field are shown as well as new methods in microwave materials processing for composite materials including new quantum aspects on microwave heating.

Book Enabling Automation of Composite Manufacturing through the Use of Off The Shelf Solutions

Download or read book Enabling Automation of Composite Manufacturing through the Use of Off The Shelf Solutions written by Andreas Björnsson and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite materials offer an appealing combination of low weight and high strength that is especially sought after in high-performance applications. The use of composite materials has and is continuing to increase, and the use of the material has been shown to provide substantial weight savings in for example aircraft design. With an increased use of composite materials follows an increased demand for cost-efficient manufacturing methods. Composite products are in many cases manufactured either by manual operations or by the use of complex automated solutions associated with high investment costs. The objective for this research is to explore an approach to develop automated composite manufacturing based on commercially available off-the-shelf solutions as an alternative to the existing automated solutions for composite manufacturing. The research, which was carried out in collaboration with industrial partners within the aerospace sector, is based on a demonstrator-centered research approach. Three conceptual demonstrators, focusing on three different manufacturing methods and a number of physical demonstrators, are used to show that off-the-shelf solutions can be used for automated manufacturing of composite products. Two aspects that affect if it is possible to use off-the-shelf solutions for automated composite manufacturing are the rigorous quality standards used by the aerospace industry and the great variety in product properties and material properties that is associated with composite manufacturing. The advantages in using off-the-shelf solutions has shown to be that the solutions generally are associated with low investments and that published information about the solutions, and the solutions themselves, is generally available for evaluation and testing. When working with the demonstrators it has been shown to be useful to break down a manufacturing system into basic tasks and consider off-the-shelf solutions for each particular task. This approach facilitates the search for a suitable off-the-shelf solution to solve a particular task. However, each of the separate tasks can affect other areas of the manufacturing system, and an overall systems perspective is required to find solutions that are compatible with the entire manufacturing system.

Book Microwave processing of polymeric materials

Download or read book Microwave processing of polymeric materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microwave energy is a potentially fast and efficient means of energy for various materials. The coupling of microwave energy into materials during processing involves much more than just shortening the heat-up time relative to conventional processing and it has the potential to provide an additional degree of control over morphology, structure, and mechanical behavior. This report summarizes a multidisciplinary research program sponsored by the Defense Advance Research Project Agency (DARPA) which has been managed by the Materials Directorate, Wright Laboratory, and the Army Research Office. Many fundamental issues relating to the influence of microwave energy on chemistry and mechanical behavior have been investigated and are reported herein. Technology development has been particularly focused on polymeric and composite materials processing. The research has included efforts at two universities, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Michigan State University. Research has also been conducted at the Materials Directorate, Wright Laboratory, the Foster Miller Company and the Aerospace Materials Development group at McDonnell Douglas.

Book Microwave and Radio Frequency Heating in Food and Beverages

Download or read book Microwave and Radio Frequency Heating in Food and Beverages written by Tatiana Koutchma and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microwave and Radio Frequency Heating in Food and Beverages discusses advanced heating techniques based on electromagnetic and electro-technologies, including radiative or microwave (MW) dielectric heating, radio-frequency (RF) or capacitive dielectric heating, infrared (IR) heating, ohmic and magnetic induction heating. Unlike conventional systems where heat energy is transferred from a hot medium to a cooler product resulting in large temperature gradients, electro-heating involves the transfer of electromagnetic energy directly into the product, initiating volumetric heating due to frictional interaction between water molecules and charged ions (i.e., heat is generated within the product). Provides basic principles and mechanisms of electromagnetic heating and microwave Explores microwave and radio-frequency (RF) effects on quality and nutrients in foods Presents the commercial applications of microwave and RF heating in the pasteurization and sterilization of foods and beverages
