Download or read book Automating Vision written by Anthony McCosker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automating Vision explores the rise of seeing machines through four case studies: facial recognition, drone vision, mobile and locative media and driverless cars. Proposing a conceptual lens of camera consciousness, which is drawn from the early visual anthropology of Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead, Automating Vision accounts for the growing power and value of camera technologies and digital image processing. Behind the smart camera devices examined throughout the book lies a set of increasingly integrated and automated technologies underpinned by artificial intelligence, machine learning and image processing. Seeing machines are now implicated in growing visual data markets and are supported by emerging layers of infrastructure that they coproduce. In this book, Anthony McCosker and Rowan Wilken address the social impacts, the disruptions and reconfigurations to existing digital media ecosystems, to urban environments and to mobility and social relations that result from the increasing automation of vision and explore how it might be possible to ensure a safe and equitable future as we learn to see with and negotiate the interventions of seeing machines. This book will appeal to students and scholars in media, communication, cultural studies, sociology of media and science and technology studies. Book Vision and Information Processing for Automation

Download or read book Vision and Information Processing for Automation written by A. Browne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in electronic hardware, particularly microprocessors and solid-state cameras, have resulted in a vast explosion in the range and variety of applications to which intelligent processing may be applied to yield cost-effective automation. Typical examples include automated visual inspection and repetitive assembly. The technology required is recent and specialized, and is thus not widely known. VISION AND INFORMATION PROCESSING FOR AUTOMATION has arisen from a short course given by the authors to introduce potential users to the technology. Its content is a development and extension of material presented in the course. The objective of the book is to introduce readers to modern concepts and techniques basic to intelligent automation, and explain how these are applied to prac tical problems. Its emphasis is on machine vision. Intelligent instrumentation is concerned with processing infor mation, and an appreciation of the nature of information is essential in configuring instrumentation to handle it effiCiently. An understand ing of the fundamental principles of efficient computation and of the way in which machines make decisions is vital for the same reasons. Selection of appropriate sensing (e.g., camera type and configuration), of illumination, of hardware for processing (microchip or parallel processor?) to give most effective information flow, and of the most appropriate processing algorithms is critical in obtaining an optimal solution. Analysis of performance, to demonstrate that requirements have been met, and to identify the causes if they have not, is also important. All of these topics are covered in this volume.

Book Automating Quality Systems

Download or read book Automating Quality Systems written by J.D. Tannock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality is a topical issue in manufacturing. Competitive quality performance still eludes many manufacturers in the traditional industrialized countries. A lack of quality competitiveness is one of the root causes of the relative industrial decline and consequent trade imbalances which plague some Western economies. Many explanations are advanced for poor quality performance. Inadequate levels of investment in advanced technology, together with insufficient education and training of the workforce, are perhaps the most prominent. Some believe these problems are caused by a lack of awareness and commitment from top management, while others point to differences between industrial cultures. The established remedy is known as Total Quality Management (TQM). TQM requires a corporate culture change, driven from the top, and involving every employee in a process of never-ending quality improvement aimed at internal as well as external customers. The techniques deployed to achieve TQM include measures to improve motivation, training in problem-solving and statistical process control (SPC). Quality is, however, only one of the competitive pressures placed It is also upon the manufacturer by the modem global economy. imperative to remain economical and efficient, while increasing the flexibility and responsiveness of the design and manufacturing functions. Here the reduction or elimination of stock is of great importance, particularly as financial interest rates in the less successful manufacturing nations are frequently high. Product life cycles must become ever more compressed in response to the phenomenal design to-manufacture performance of some Pacific rim economies.

This book offers a unique analysis of these algorithms from a critical visual culture studies perspective. The first part of this study examines the example of an early facial recognition algorithm called »eigenface« and traces a history of the merging of statistics and vision. The second part addresses contemporary artistic engagements with facial recognition technology in the work of Thomas Ruff, Zach Blas, and Trevor Paglen. This book argues that we must take a closer look at the technology of automated facial recognition and claims that its forms of representation are embedded with visual politics. Even more significantly, this technology is redefining what it means to see and be seen in the contemporary world.

Book Automation of Visual Weather Observations

Download or read book Automation of Visual Weather Observations written by H. Albert Brown and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was performed to determine the feasibility of objectively and automatically determining two key components of an aviation weather observation: present weather and obstruction to vision. The automated system utilized was an instrumented tower and surface array of sensors located at the AFGL Weather Test Facility (WTF), Otis AFB, Massachusetts. The objective method consisted of a decision-tree program (AUTO) based on several uniquely different responses by these weather sensors to the same weather phenomena and on discrimination techniques using tower and surface instrument comparison. The ability of AUTO to monitor rapidly changing weather events and to discriminate different types of weather is demonstrated through selected hourly periods of observations taken at 1-min intervals. Hourly observations generated over a 14-month period, March 1978 through April 1979, are compared with FAA observations to determine the effectiveness of AUTO. Major areas of agreement were found in the discrimination of fog, haze, snow, rain, and no weather. Final results show that the FAA observations of the existence and non-existence of obstructions to vision and present weather were duplicated in 82 and 86% of the cases. Thus the acquisition of real weather for an aviation weather observation, a duty presently performed by a human observer, is obtainable through an objective decision-tree program using an automated sensor array.
