Book Automatic Syntactic Analysis Based on Selectional Preferences

Download or read book Automatic Syntactic Analysis Based on Selectional Preferences written by Alexander Gelbukh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes effective methods for automatically analyzing a sentence, based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics of the elements that form it. To tackle ambiguities, the authors use selectional preferences (SP), which measure how well two words fit together semantically in a sentence. Today, many disciplines require automatic text analysis based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics of language and as such several techniques for parsing sentences have been proposed. Which is better? In this book the authors begin with simple heuristics before moving on to more complex methods that identify nouns and verbs and then aggregate modifiers, and lastly discuss methods that can handle complex subordinate and relative clauses. During this process, several ambiguities arise. SP are commonly determined on the basis of the association between a pair of words. However, in many cases, SP depend on more words. For example, something (such as grass) may be edible, depending on who is eating it (a cow?). Moreover, things such as popcorn are usually eaten at the movies, and not in a restaurant. The authors deal with these phenomena from different points of view.

Book excerpt: A description is given of PARSE, a system for the automatic syntactic analysis of English sentences. It is capable of analyzing and labeling the structure of a variety of sentences. The system employs a parsing logic which both applies the grammar exhaustively and disengages it from the routines that apply it to text, so that changes in grammar will not affect the program. The memorandum describes the linguistic features and details the operation of the program. (Author).

Book Parse a System for Automatic Syntactic Analysis of English Text

Download or read book Parse a System for Automatic Syntactic Analysis of English Text written by Jane J. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A list is presented of the three major components of PARSE, a system for the automatic syntactic analysis of English sentences. It contains: (1) a glossary of the words used, grouped alphabetically by families; (2) a presentation of the words organized by the grammar codes devised for them; and (3) a listing of 26 words which, because of their excessive length, would not fit the format and had to be removed from the main body of the glossary. A final section lists errata. (Author).

Book An Introduction to Syntactic Analysis and Theory

Download or read book An Introduction to Syntactic Analysis and Theory written by Dominique Sportiche and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Syntactic Analysis and Theory offers beginning students a comprehensive overview of and introduction to our current understanding of the rules and principles that govern the syntax of natural languages. Includes numerous pedagogical features such as ‘practice’ boxes and sidebars, designed to facilitate understanding of both the ‘hows’ and the ‘whys’ of sentence structure Guides readers through syntactic and morphological structures in a progressive manner Takes the mystery out of one of the most crucial aspects of the workings of language – the principles and processes behind the structure of sentences Ideal for students with minimal knowledge of current syntactic research, it progresses in theoretical difficulty from basic ideas and theories to more complex and advanced, up to date concepts in syntactic theory

Book Syntactic Analysis in Automatic Translation

Download or read book Syntactic Analysis in Automatic Translation written by Murray Eliot Sherry and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for the syntactic analysis of Russian sentences, applied to automatic translation, is divided into a morphological word-by-word phase and a syntactical sentence-by-sentence phase. An idealized canonical stem dictionary is presented, and its significant lexicographic properties are pointed out. This idealized dictionary then servesAS A BASIS FOR EVALUATING THE ACTUAL Harvard Automatic Dictionary. Aspects of morphological analysis of the Russian language and a series of programs written to carry it out are described. To explain the practical problems encountered in an experimental syntactic analysis program, of which a detailed description is given, a new model of natural language is introduced. (Author).

Book Syntactic Analysis

Download or read book Syntactic Analysis written by Robert D. Levine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In syntactic analysis, as in linguistics generally, the skills required to first identify, and then make sense of, complex patterns in linguistic data involve a certain specific kind of reasoning, where various alternatives are entertained and modified in light of progressively broader empirical coverage. Rather than focus on transmitting the details of complex theoretical superstructures, this textbook takes a practical, analytical approach, starting from a small set of powerful analytic tools, applied first to simple phenomena and then to the passive, complement and raising/control constructions. The analytic tools are then applied to unbounded dependencies, via detailed argumentation. What emerges is that syntactic structure, and intricate networks of dependencies linking different parts of those structures, are straightforward projections of lexical valence, in tandem with very general rules regulating the sharing of feature values. Featuring integrated exercises and problems throughout each chapter, this book equips students with the analytical tools for recognizing and assessing linguistic patterns.

Book PREDICTIVE SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS

Download or read book PREDICTIVE SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS written by Murray E. Sherry and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predictive syntactic analysis is a scheme for the automatic syntactic analysis of natural language that is based on a continuous left-to-right scan of a sentence. This report supersedes previous reports on the experimental predictive syntactic analysis program for Russian. All the grammatical rules followed by the experimental program are here included. This paper is intended to serve at this time both as a report of past accomplishments and as a working paper on which to base future research. (Author).
