Book excerpt: Shipping is the world’s oldest sharing economy and is conducted in a self-organizing manner. Shipping is capital, energy, and information intensive, and with the growing impact of digitalization and climate change, there is a need to rethink the management and operations of this critical global industry - assisted in no small way by maritime informatics. Building upon the recently published inaugural book Maritime Informatics by Springer, this book will address some of the most recent practical developments and experiences, particularly from a global perspective. The focus of the book is to address contemporary movements to tackle global concerns and to complement Maritime Informatics.

Book Automatic Identification System AIS Transmit Testing in Louisville Phase 2

Download or read book Automatic Identification System AIS Transmit Testing in Louisville Phase 2 written by Gregory W. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an autonomous and continuous broadcast system that exchanges maritime safety/security information between participating vessels and shore stations. In addition to providing a means for maritime administrations to effectively track the movement of vessels in coastal and inland waters, AIS can be a means to transmit information to ships in port or underway that contributes to safety-of-navigation and protection of the environment using Application Specific Messages (ASMs). The United States Coast Guard Research and Development Center has developed processes to manage the ASMs. Several standard ASMs have been defined and methods have been developed for message creation, routing, queuing, transmission and monitoring. An AIS transmit architecture aligned with International standards has been developed to implement the efficient and robust transmission of ASMs. As part of the development and testing of the capability to transmit electronic Marine Safety Information (eMSI), RDC established a test bed in Louisville, KY. This report summarizes the goals and results of both the first phase conducted in 2012 and the second phase conducted July 2013 - May 2014. The tests show that the transmission of eMSI can improve safety-of-navigation and efficiency of marine transportation.

Book Automatic Identification System AIS User Requirements

Download or read book Automatic Identification System AIS User Requirements written by Michael Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a new technology that should improve situational awareness for the mariner by providing navigation information such as the names, positions, courses, and speeds of vessels in the immediate vicinity. Over the past decade, there has been a great deal of research to support the standards for AIS set forth by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Telecommunications Union (ITU), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Association of Marine Aids-to-Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). However, there has been little work done to develop the AIS users' needs relating to this technology. Without a relevant and easy to use interface, AIS will not be an effective tool for the mariner. This report attempts to describe and qualify some of the requirements for the user interface based on AIS tests conducted in San Francisco Bay, the Baltic Sea and British Columbia. Discussed are issues involving display features such as vessel icons, Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) information, carry aboard units, and workload issues related to the new technology. Coupled with a user-friendly interface, the AIS information should allow the mariner to focus more time on the navigation situation around them thus increasing situational awareness and safety. This report only scratches the surface. Areas that still need to be explored include enhanced AIS issues such as direct sensor information, shore radar integration, intermodal information, environmental mishaps, and search and rescue responses.

Book Availability and Integrity Model of Automatic Identification System AIS Information

Download or read book Availability and Integrity Model of Automatic Identification System AIS Information written by Krzysztof Jaskólski and published by . This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Nautical Science, course: -, language: English, abstract: Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a data exchange system which was introduced to improve shipping safety and the possibility of exchanging data, at a country and international level, about ships heading to or from ports, as well as exchanging data relating to passengers and dangerous or environment-polluting cargo carried by ships. The main purpose of introducing AIS was to offer a wider spectrum of available, continuous and reliable navigational data. Apart from being useful for traffic control in a marine area, AIS data can be a very important source of information used in collision avoidance process. However, some reservations are voiced with regard to the unconditional reliance on the data transferred through this channel. The information integrity problem had been raised already at the stage of system implementation and some fragmentary outcomes were published in the past. However, it can be assumed that the results from the system introduction period may not represent reality. Thus, it seems reasonable to base the assessment on theoretical analysis, through the development of multi-criteria model describing the AIS information integrity. The research was performed on data recorded in the period between 04.04.2006 r. and 08.01.2012 r. (selected 55 weeks- 385 days) in the laboratory of Institute of Navigation and Hydrography. Only full 24-hour recordings of AIS signals were selected for the analysis. Fifty five measurement sessions were used to determine the limit probability for availability and integrity exponential of information system, expected value of system lifetime, expected value of system failure time, failure rate, renewal rate. Utilizing homogenous Markov Chains, prediction of the state of availability and integrity of selected AIS information components was carried out. The proposed research approach in many cases gav
