Book A New Automatic Processing Technique for Satellite Imagery Analysis

Download or read book A New Automatic Processing Technique for Satellite Imagery Analysis written by R. S. Hawkins and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to the analysis of satellite imagery is presented. The central part of this approach is an algorithm which compresses information stored in the ordinary six or eight bits per picture element into only one bit. The quality of this compression is demonstrated by examples of its application to high resolution visual imagery. Both visual inspection and rms difference criterion are used for this evaluation. There are four objectives of this report which are: to review the status of processing techniques which remove redundant information, to show the need for redundance reduction in the processing of satellite images, to present the development of an algorithm for reducing it, and to show results obtained by application of the algorithm to visual imagery. Also, comments are made on needed developments of the technique and its potential application to problems of analysis of satellite imagery data. (Author).

Book Advances in Geoscience and Remote Sensing

Download or read book Advances in Geoscience and Remote Sensing written by Gary Jedlovec and published by IntechOpen. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing is the acquisition of information of an object or phenomenon, by the use of either recording or real-time sensing device(s), that is not in physical or intimate contact with the object (such as by way of aircraft, spacecraft, satellite, buoy, or ship). In practice, remote sensing is the stand-off collection through the use of a variety of devices for gathering information on a given object or area. Human existence is dependent on our ability to understand, utilize, manage and maintain the environment we live in - Geoscience is the science that seeks to achieve these goals. This book is a collection of contributions from world-class scientists, engineers and educators engaged in the fields of geoscience and remote sensing.

Book Evaluation of Automated Imagery Analysis Algorithms for Use in the Three dimensional Nephanalysis Model at AFGWC

Download or read book Evaluation of Automated Imagery Analysis Algorithms for Use in the Three dimensional Nephanalysis Model at AFGWC written by Robert Paul D'Entremont and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two different imagery analysis algorithms, one of which is currently in use by the 3DNEPH automated cloud analysis program at the Air Force Global Weather Central (AFGWC), and the other developed at AFGL, were evaluated and compared on a sample set of DMSP IR data (10.2 to 12.8 micrometers) with the aid of the AFGL Man-computer Interactive Data Access System. The 3DNEPH algorithm, MODAL, and the AFGL algorithm, CLUSTER, were designed to separate cloud layers in IR satellite imagery. Such information is used by the 3DNEPH to compute cloud analysis parameters as percent cloud (earth) coverage and cloud heights. Both algorithms were found to perform well under some meteorological circumstances, but not so well under others. In general, however, it was found that CLUSTER performs better. The CLUSTER algorithm found clear/cloud boundaries, numbers of cloud layers, and fractional cloud covers that are closer to estimates made by analysts looking at corresponding IR and visible images. The MODAL algorithm found more cloud layers than were observed, and tended to overanalyze the transition regions between cloud layers. The AFGWC has recognized the limitations of MODAL and the complications in its computer code. Subsequently, a substantially revised version of the 3DNEPH has been written, and is known as the Real-Time Nephanalysis (RTNEPH).

Book Tests of Spectral Cloud Classification Using DMSP Fine Mode Satellite Data

Download or read book Tests of Spectral Cloud Classification Using DMSP Fine Mode Satellite Data written by James T. Bunting and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer-based processor for satellite imagery was tested on samples of DMSP visible and IR imagery data smoothed to 0.6 n mi resolution. The data were displayed on the AFGL Man-computer Interactive Data Access System so that meteorologists could label small areas (25 x 25 n mi) with one of nine possible cloud categories from the AF 3D Nephanalysis Program (3DNEPH). The computer-based processor labeled the same areas by computing a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) and comparing the results to average wavenumber spectra for the cloud categories. Classification accuracies were 65% for visible, 65% for IR and 81% for combined data. The classification accuracies were appreciably better than chance and a simplified processor which used only the averaged values of satellite data over an area. Accuracies improved is some categories were merged. The results were also compared to a cloud typing procedure in the 3DNEPH and to some earlier studies. The results were generally good for categories with small-scale cloud features such as cumulus or cirrus clouds, but the overall accuracy of classification for all cloud categories was not significantly better than verifications cited in earlier studies. Two potential refinements to the spectral processors, namely, removing the effects of backgrounds such as land, water, and snow cover and minimizing sensitivity to varying fractional cloud cover from case to case, are also discussed. Download or read book Object Based Image Analysis written by Thomas Blaschke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-09 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of invited interdisciplinary persp- tives on the recent topic of Object-based Image Analysis (OBIA). Its c- st tent is based on select papers from the 1 OBIA International Conference held in Salzburg in July 2006, and is enriched by several invited chapters. All submissions have passed through a blind peer-review process resulting in what we believe is a timely volume of the highest scientific, theoretical and technical standards. The concept of OBIA first gained widespread interest within the GIScience (Geographic Information Science) community circa 2000, with the advent of the first commercial software for what was then termed ‘obje- oriented image analysis’. However, it is widely agreed that OBIA builds on older segmentation, edge-detection and classification concepts that have been used in remote sensing image analysis for several decades. Nevert- less, its emergence has provided a new critical bridge to spatial concepts applied in multiscale landscape analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the synergy between image-objects and their radiometric char- teristics and analyses in Earth Observation data (EO).

Book Automated Satellite Cloud Analysis

Download or read book Automated Satellite Cloud Analysis written by Robert C. Allen (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An algorithm is developed and evaluated for discriminating among clouds, snow cover and clear land. The multispectral technique uses daytime images of AVHRR channels 1 (0.63 microns, 3 (3.7 microns) and 4 (11.0 microns). Reflectance is derived for channel 3 by using the channel 4 emission temperature to estimate and remove the channel 3 thermal emission. Separation of clouds from snow and land is based primarily on this derived channel 3 reflectance. Using this technique, observed reflectance in channel 3 is 2 to 4% for snow, 3 to 10 % for land, 2 to 27 % for ice clouds and 8 to 36 % for liquid clouds. These values overlap for thin cirrus and snow, so the routine than attempts analysis of cirrus based on its different transmissive properties between channels 3 and 4. Six images were analyzed and the total cloud cover was verified against a total of 110 conventional surface observations using the standard categories of clear, scattered, broken and overcast. The routine was quite successful, with the analyzed sky cover being within category for 55% of the stations, one category different for 33%, 2 categories different for 9% and 3 categories for 3% of the stations. A major remaining problem is discrimination between ice clouds and snow cover due to the great similarity of reflective properties of there two surfaces.
