Book excerpt: Heritage is synonymous with Nassau Country Club, home of the "two dollar Nassau wager"; also of the original Calamity Jane, renowned putter of Bobby Jones, & the Nassau bowl, oldest tennis award in the U.S. This Nassau Journey began 100 years ago in the heart of the old Gold Coast of Glen Cove, Long Island. The founders were rich in the history of this country at the turn into the 1900's. Among its first golf professionals were Alex Smith & Jimmie Maiden, from Carnoustie, Scotland. Nassau CC was The Place To Be for Jones, Travers, & Hagen, Vardon & Ray--for Nassau Bowl aspirants tennis greats Clothier, Tilden, Riggs, Trabert & Newcombe--J. P. Morgan & Percy Chubb--past Presidents of the U.S., luminaries, & royalty from abroad. Nassau is that rich in past tournaments in golf, lawn tennis, & squash that we earnestly researched & detailed many matches stroke by stroke; although unique for a club history, we invite the true follower to relive the excitement of days past to the present. Along the way, we introduce our members, their fun ways, the challenges exacerbated by two world wars, & the paths followed to solve problems & insure a future bicentennial.

Download or read book The Brummer Collection of Medieval Art written by Duke University. Museum of Art and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brummer Collection of Medieval Art in the Duke University Museum of Art is one of the finest to be found in any American university museum. It is remarkable for its breadth and the variety of objects represented, with works varying in scale from monumental stone pieces to small-scale objects in wood, ivory, or metal, and ranging from the seventh to eighth centuries through the sixteenth century. This fine catalog makes available for the first time this rich but little-known collection. Five studies by leading art scholars focus on key works in the collection and contribute to a new understanding of the origins of many of the pieces. Two introductory essays comment on the character of the collection as a whole, its acquisition by Duke University, and its conservation. Finally, the catalog section discusses the more important pieces in the collection and is followed by a checklist of entries and smaller photographs of all other objects. Contributors. Ilene H. Forsyth, Jean M. French, Dorothy F. Glass, Dieter Kimpel, Jill Meredith, Linda S. Roundhill

Download or read book America s National Game written by Albert G. Spalding and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in great demand by baseball enthusiasts. Having been connected with every department of the game from player to magnate, Mr. Spalding has contributed a very important work to the game's history. As the invincible pitcher of the Boston Club, previous to the formation of the National League, his book of so many pages is an interesting record of events dating from the beginning of the great American pastime. It is not exactly a history of the game, but deals largely with incidents during the author's career, who was a player in the late 1860s and early 1870s, and helped organize the National League in 1876. One chapter, devoted to sundry topics, gives an account of the sale of the immortal "King Kelly," the original "$10,000 beauty," by Chicago to the Boston Club in the late 1880s. Other Chapters are devoted to the literature of the game, quoting several instances of the baseball paragrapher's art and also specimens of the distinct poetry of the pastime, of which "Casey at the Bat" is probably the most widely known. The Cincinnati Red Stockings Mr. Spalding gives credit as being the pioneer professional organization. It was not, however, until 1871 that professional baseball playing, as recognized today, was instituted. Mr. Spalding shows how cricket could not do for Americans. He says it is suitable for the British temperament, but not for the Yankee hustling spirit. He also tells how he worked into the game through a one-handed catch when a small boy. To lovers of baseball, whose name is legion, and whose number increases yearly, this book comprises in itself a whole library of useful information.
Download or read book Indian Ink written by Tom Stoppard and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Tony Award-winning playwright Tom Stoppard, Indian Ink is a rich and moving portrait of intimate lives set against one of the great shafts of history—the emergence of the Indian subcontinent from the grip of Europe. The play follows free-spirited English poet Flora Crewe on her travels through India in the 1930s, where her intricate relationship with an Indian artist unfurls against the backdrop of a country seeking its independence. Fifty years later, in 1980s England, her younger sister Eleanor attempts to preserve the legacy of Flora’s controversial career, while Flora’s would-be biographer is following a cold trail in India. Fresh from the critically acclaimed off-Broadway performance in 2014, Indian Ink is reemerging as an important part of Stoppard’s oeuvre and the global dramatic canon, a fascinating, time-hopping masterwork.

Download or read book What Can a Mother Do to Preserve Her Children s Teeth written by Henry C. Quinby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Can a Mother Do to Preserve Her Children's Teeth? The question which serves as a title to this httle book is one that almost every mother asks when she takes her suffering child to the dentist to get relief from the first experience of the pain which Burns describes as the - "venomed stang That shoots my tortured gums alang: And through my lugs gi es mony a twang Wi' gnawing vengeance." And there are so many erroneous ideas, with so little real knowledge of what a mother can and should do for her childrens teeth, that it has seemed to me a want would be supplied if some trustworthy information were put together in a popular form to explain a few of the causes of tooth deterioration, and the means by which the evil can be arrested. My experience as a dental practitioner teaches me that if parents do not take the trouble to look after their children's teeth intelligently and carefully, the dentist may as well cease his endeavours to preserve these organs, and go back to his old position of tooth-drawer, which is still the only idea conveyed to many minds by the word dentist.
