Download or read book Galahad in the Gilded Age written by Linda Dowling and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galahad in the Gilded Age is the story of George William Curtis, regarded at the beginning of his career as little more than a handsome, amusing young man from a socially prominent family. His life would change dramatically after four years traveling in Europe and the Levant, from which he returned to find himself a literary celebrity—“the Howadji”—following the appearance of two books describing his Middle East experiences that some considered so provocatively sensuous as to border on obscenity. Yet during this early celebrity, Curtis would find his life changing profoundly—discovering marital happiness, facing financial bankruptcy and finding himself irresistibly drawn into increasingly bitter controversies: the national battle against slavery, against wide-spreading political corruption, and against what Curtis regarded as a wholly unreasonable resistance to granting women the right to vote. George William Curtis, a contemporary would conclude after his death, was “the best knight of our time.”

Download or read book Sound Souvenirs written by Karin Bijsterveld and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the importance of sound for remembering the past and for creating a sense of belonging has been increasingly acknowledged. We keep "sound souvenirs" such as cassette tapes and long play albums in our attics because we want to be able to recreate the music and everyday sounds we once cherished. Artists and ordinary listeners deploy the newest digital audio technologies to recycle past sounds into present tunes. Sound and memory are inextricably intertwined, not just through the commercially exploited nostalgia on oldies radio stations, but through the exchange of valued songs by means of pristine recordings and cultural practices such as collecting, archiving and listing. This book explores several types of cultural practices involving the remembrance and restoration of past sounds. At the same time, it theorizes the cultural meaning of collecting, recycling, reciting, and remembering sound and music.
Download or read book Imaging Desire written by Mary Kelly and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Kelly's transgressive projects helped to instigate conceptual art's second phase; her daring critiques of the female body as a fetishized, allegorized, commodified site were debated long after they were first seen in galleries and discussed in catalogues, and long before the debut of the "bad girls" in the 1990s. In fact, the debates currently surrounding Kelly's work are a necessary and defining element of theoretical discourse about art today.
Download or read book A Tale of Two Factions written by Jane Hathaway and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2003 Ohio Academy of History Outstanding Publication Award This revisionist study reevaluates the origins and foundation myths of the Faqaris and Qasimis, two rival factions that divided Egyptian society during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when Egypt was the largest province in the Ottoman Empire. In answer to the enduring mystery surrounding the factions' origins, Jane Hathaway places their emergence within the generalized crisis that the Ottoman Empire—like much of the rest of the world—suffered during the early modern period, while uncovering a symbiosis between Ottoman Egypt and Yemen that was critical to their formation. In addition, she scrutinizes the factions' foundation myths, deconstructing their tropes and symbols to reveal their connections to much older popular narratives. Drawing on parallels from a wide array of cultures, she demonstrates with striking originality how rituals such as storytelling and public processions, as well as identifying colors and emblems, could serve to reinforce factional identity.
