Book excerpt: Andre the Giant Has a Posse is a street art campaign based on an original design by Frank Shepard Fairey created in 1989 while Fairey was a student at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). At the time Fairey declared the campaign to be "an experiment in phenomenology." Over time the artwork has been reused in a number of ways and has become a world-wide pataphysical movement, following in the footsteps of Ivan Stang's Church of the SubGenius and populist WWII icon Kilroy Was Here. At the same time, Fairey's work has evolved stylistically and semantically into the OBEY Giant campaign. This book displays 10 years of graphic evolution - from the first photocopied "Andre the Giant" sticker that Shepard Fairey made at RISD to the giant billboard posters you see all around the world. A stunning full-colour documentation of Fairey's T `campaign' of postering and stencils It attempts to simultaneously bring the viewer to question propaganda absorption and to encourage a better use of public space.

Book Serving in Silence

Download or read book Serving in Silence written by Margarethe Cammermeyer and published by . This book was released on 2005-07 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most business owners go into business for themselves to increase their personal wealth, build an asset that they can either pass on to heirs or sell, and for greater flexibility or an enhanced quality of life. To do this, every business will eventually need employees. And this is the biggest hurdle a small business owner will face in growing the business. Common difficulties include finding a good fit for the growing enterprise; matching skill level with affordability; employee "management by abdication" issues; and the nightmare of compliance with regard to tax payment and reporting requirements. This book will provide a step-by-step guide to finding and keeping the right people. It provides suggestions on structuring the job, advertising and interviewing, creating job descriptions, and reviewing and rewarding team members. This book can help transition a one-man shop into a professional organization that will eventually be able to survive without the owner working at every task, thus building true business value.

Book Politics in Germany

Book The German Predicament

Download or read book The German Predicament written by Andrei S. Markovits and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the unification of Germany really mean? In their stimulating exploration of that question, Andrei S. Markovits and Simon Reich sketch diametrically different interpretations than are frequently offered by commentators. One is that Germany, well aware of the Holocaust, has been 'Europeanized' and is now prepared to serve as the capitalist and democratic locomotive that powers Europe. The other is that the proclivities behind Auschwitz have been suppressed rather than obliterated from the German psyche. Germany's liberal democracy was imposed by the allied victors, according to this view, and will one day dissolve, revealing the old expansionist tendencies to try to 'Germanize' all of Europe. Markovits and Reich argue that benign contemporary assessments of Germany's postwar democracy, combined with admiration for the country's economic achievements, contribute to German influence far greater than military might was able to achieve. Yet, at the same time, some Germans have internalized liberal and pacifist principles and now see their nation as powerless, simply a larger Switzerland. As a result, while the Germans have enormous influence and latitude, they have not taken responsibility for leadership. The prime reason for this gap beween ideology and structure, Markovits and Reich suggest, lies in the politics of collective memory.
