Book excerpt: Stressed and unstressed specimens of Monel, Ni, and Inconel were exposed to varied environmental conditions to test their resistance to corrosion. Experiments were conducted in autoclaves operated at 450 F and 422 psia for 50, 200 and 2000 hours. Environmental conditions included variations in concentration of chloride, oxygen, phase (liquid or vapor) and method of pH adjustment. Statistical methods were employed in designing experiments and analyzing results. An incipient surface dulling was noted on some of the specimens that were tested for 50 and 200 hr, but none of the specimens cracked or pitted. No cracking of any coupons was observed in the 2000-hr autoclave tests, but varying degrees of pitting did occur for all 3 metals. Typical corrosion rates from the 2000-hr data for coupons exposed to 1000 ppm chloride and 15 ppm oxygen were: Monel, 0.50 mdd; nickel, 0.38 mdd; and Inconel, 0.02 mdd. Based on the test results, the materials are listed in order of preference as follows: Inconel, nickel, and Monel.

In Interlaboratory \1, each laboratory used its own test procedure. The large scatter in data is attributed primarily to differences in autoclave start-up techniques, with minor contributions from variations in pickling time, and residual oxygen remaining in the autoclaves.

The data were used to show the effects of test parameters, cure conditions, and material age on the apparent shear. Failure modes were recorded. Findings include: (1) Based on the horizontal shear test, CE 9000 (Ferro Corp.) should not be postcured above 370 F, and the desirability and effects of a postcure between 350F and 370F should be explored before committing to this postcure condition. (2) Autoclave cure of CE 9000 will increase its resin dominated shear properties 50% or more, compared to vacuum-bag, oven-cured parts. An appreciable drop in apparent shear using the short beam method occurs as S/t6 is increased. Data should be normalized to a consistent S/t for comparison. (3) The predominant damage pattern for woven glass coupons is related to S/t and the degree of cure. (4) Certain woven glass composites require an S/t well below 5 to achieve shear failure. (5) Short beam specimens of the type investigated should be fabricated with peel plies or porous release cloth on both sides.

Book excerpt: Samples from 10 vendors of CMOS 4001 plastic encapsulated integrated circuits were tested in an autoclave at 121 C, 100% RH and 15 psig with and without electrical bias. Twenty-nine test groups of 16 circuits each accumulated over 200,000 device hours. Failure analyses were performed to verify moisture related electrochemical aluminum metal corrosion on the die. Weibull failure distributions showed large differences in moisture resistance reliability among the various vendor products. Test devices with newer data coded packages had longer median life times. There was no correlation of median life time between groups with and without electrical bias. (Author).
