Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Rev. James G. Baldwin I would rather some one else would write the story of my life. I have feared that there would be a temptation to introduce too much of the ego, that so many capital I's would be needed that the printers might be embarrassed in providing this important letter. However, it has come to me of late that my own life and labors are better known to myself than to any one else. Why then should it be a duty to be dreaded, or to be left to another who could not know the ins and outs of my life as well as myself? If the critic would permit I should be glad to write it in my individual style, so that those who have heard me preach and sing and pray would say, "That is Baldwin." I do not wish to write out all my mistakes and crookedness, but I shall try to chronicle as much as I may of the good that it has been mine to do and enjoy in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The time in which I have lived has been the most wonderful in the history of the world's progress. For many generations men appeared to be content to move in the treadmill rounds of their ancestors. Within my own lifetime it was deemed a wicked interference with the laws of the Almighty to invent a vehicle that would travel more than fifteen miles an hour, but I have lived to see the age of express trains, aeroplanes, and wireless telegraphy. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Rev. James B. Finley, or Pioneer Life in the West The following pages contain a brief, unvarnished narrative of the incidents of my life; and as, in the providence of God, I was permitted to grow up with the west, it may not be uninteresting to the people of the west, to be made more fully acquainted with my somewhat eventful history. For upward of forty years I have been constantly engaged in preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the woods, cities, and villages of the west; and nearly all that time, with few exceptions, such as I have noted, my name has been on the effective list of traveling preachers. My time, with what talents I had, has all been consecrated to the Church of my choice, and now, after the lapse of almost half a century in the serv ice of the Church, I would not recall what I have done and suffered for Christ's sake. The only regret that I have is, that I did not accomplish more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book James Baldwin

Download or read book James Baldwin written by David Leeming and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Baldwin was one of the great writers of the last century. In works that have become part of the American canon—Go Tell It on a Mountain, Giovanni’s Room, Another Country, The Fire Next Time, and The Evidence of Things Not Seen—he explored issues of race and racism in America, class distinction, and sexual difference. A gay, African American writer who was born in Harlem, he found the freedom to express himself living in exile in Paris. When he returned to America to cover the Civil Rights movement, he became an activist and controversial spokesman for the movement, writing books that became bestsellers and made him a celebrity, landing him on the cover of Time. In this biography, which Library Journal called “indispensable,” David Leeming creates an intimate portrait of a complex, troubled, driven, and brilliant man. He plumbs every aspect of Baldwin’s life: his relationships with the unknown and the famous, including painter Beauford Delaney, Richard Wright, Lorraine Hansberry, Marlon Brando, Harry Belafonte, Lena Horne, and childhood friend Richard Avedon; his expatriate years in France and Turkey; his gift for compassion and love; the public pressures that overwhelmed his quest for happiness, and his passionate battle for black identity, racial justice, and to “end the racial nightmare and achieve our country.” Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. J. Simpson. We have also published survivor stories of World War II, memoirs about overcoming adversity, first-hand tales of adventure, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book The Cross of Redemption

Download or read book The Cross of Redemption written by James Baldwin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the most brilliant and provocative literary figures of the past century—a collection of essays, articles, reviews, and interviews that have never before been gathered in a single volume. “An absorbing portrait of Baldwin’s time—and of him.” —New York Review of Books James Baldwin was an American literary master, renowned for his fierce engagement with issues haunting our common history. In The Cross of Redemption we have Baldwin discoursing on, among other subjects, the possibility of an African-American president and what it might mean; the hypocrisy of American religious fundamentalism; the black church in America; the trials and tribulations of black nationalism; anti-Semitism; the blues and boxing; Russian literary masters; and the role of the writer in our society. Prophetic and bracing, The Cross of Redemption is a welcome and important addition to the works of a cosmopolitan and canonical American writer who still has much to teach us about race, democracy, and personal and national identity. As Michael Ondaatje has remarked, “If van Gogh was our nineteenth-century artist-saint, Baldwin [was] our twentieth-century one.”

Book The Fire Next Time

Download or read book The Fire Next Time written by James Baldwin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1992-12-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963, The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation, gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement—and still lights the way to understanding race in America today. "Basically the finest essay I’ve ever read. . . . Baldwin refused to hold anyone’s hand. He was both direct and beautiful all at once. He did not seem to write to convince you. He wrote beyond you.” —Ta-Nehisi Coates At once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin's early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document from the iconic author of If Beale Street Could Talk and Go Tell It on the Mountain. It consists of two "letters," written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, that exhort Americans, both black and white, to attack the terrible legacy of racism. Described by The New York Times Book Review as "sermon, ultimatum, confession, deposition, testament, and chronicle...all presented in searing, brilliant prose," The Fire Next Time stands as a classic of literature.

Book Native Sons

Download or read book Native Sons written by James Baldwin and published by One World. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Baldwin was beginning to be recognized as the most brilliant black writer of his generation when his first book of essays, Notes of a Native Son, established his reputation in 1955. No one was more pleased by the book’s reception than Baldwin’s high school friend Sol Stein. A rising New York editor, novelist, and playwright, Stein had suggested that Baldwin do the book and coaxed his old friend through the long and sometimes agonizing process of putting the volume together and seeing it into print. Now, in this fascinating new book, Sol Stein documents the story of his intense creative partnership with Baldwin through newly uncovered letters, photos, inscriptions, and an illuminating memoir of the friendship that resulted in one of the classics of American literature. Included in this book are the two works they created together–the story “Dark Runner” and the play Equal in Paris, both published here for the first time. Though a world of difference separated them–Baldwin was black and gay, living in self-imposed exile in Europe; Stein was Jewish and married, with a growing family to support–the two men shared the same fundamental passion. Nothing mattered more to either of them than telling and writing the truth, which was not always welcome. As Stein wrote Baldwin in a long, heartfelt letter, “You are the only friend with whom I feel comfortable about all three: heart, head, and writing.” In this extraordinary book, Stein unfolds how that shared passion played out in the months surrounding the creation and publication of Baldwin’s Notes of a Native Son, in which Baldwin’s main themes are illuminated. A literary event published to honor the eightieth anniversary of James Baldwin’s birth, Native Sons is a celebration of one of the most fruitful and influential friendships in American letters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview: #1 I write to you as a brother and a father. I have carried your father in my arms and on my shoulders, kissed and spanked him, and watched him learn to walk. I do not know if you have known anyone from that far back, but if you have loved anyone that long, you gain a strange perspective on time and human pain. #2 You were born in America, to parents who were not bitter. But your countrymen have caused you to be born under conditions not very far removed from those described by Charles Dickens in the London of more than a hundred years ago. You were born to be loved, and to strengthen you against the loveless world. #3 The limits of your ambition were predetermined as you were born into a society that made clear to you from an early age that you were inferior to white people. You were not expected to achieve excellence, but to make peace with mediocrity.
