Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiographical Recollections, Vol. 2 of 2 Morse and I find ourselves very comfortable in our new lodgings, and I hope we shall not change again very soon. Our landlady has a very pretty daughter, which is one very great recommendation to her lodgings. By the bye, we shall not now be able to hear of King's arrival very soon. If he delivers the letter I gave him to mother, I hope you will all show him a good deal of attention, as he was a very great friend to me here. I am sure you will like him, for he is very agreeable, has read a good deal, and, from the opportunities I have had of judging, I think he has an excellent heart as well as head. He will be able to give you a good account of me, of the manner in which I live, &c. There is one quality that I found in King which pleased me much, because it is a scarce one, he does not flatter. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiographical Recollections of the Medical Profession For a long time past I have contemplated placing upon record my recollections of the Profession for the last forty years. Having been for nearly that long period officially connected with the first weekly Medical Journal which was established in this country, I have had peculiar opportunities of becoming acquainted with persons and circumstances, and a knowledge of these may be interesting and instructive to the present race of Medical Practitioners. I had at first thought of writing the history of the Profession during the time mentioned. I was anxious to carry this out for many reasons, but chiefly from the fact that I had on very many occasions been requested to do so by friends and acquaintances. Book Recollections of My Life and Times

Download or read book Recollections of My Life and Times written by James Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of My Life and Times: An Autobiography I have selected from the Journal those portions which seemed most likely to interest the general reader, and as these are given in their chronological order they will be found to furnish a supplemental narrative. The same qualities are apparent throughout these manuscripts which distinguished the man in all his ways - kindliness and simplicity, an all - pervading love for Christ, and tender consideration towards his fellow - men. His object was not the establishment of a literary reputa tion, but to recall for his own profit, and to relate for the instruction of others, these simple recollections of a de voted life. In the confidence that it will be accepted by many in this light, and with the hope that it may tend to prolong the wholesome influence of Dr. Morgan's character and ministry, I commit this memoir to the community among whom he laboured so long, and the flock he so dearly loved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiographical Sketches and Recollections: During a Thirty-Five Years Residence in New Orleans To accomplish such an object it is necessary to enumerate some of the antecedents of my earlier days in the successive scenes of a New England home, school, college, and. Theological training. It may be said further, that I have been repeatedly urged within the last few years to write my life by several clergymen of different sects, on the ground that such a work would afford something of novelty, interest, and instruction for readers of every char acter, however diversified by religious faith and predilections. Such, in general, are the reasons which have induced me to prepare this volume for the public. I pray that the offering may go forth under the auspices of Him who is ready to help all sincere laborers in the field of philanthropy; that it may not be entirely useless nor unedifying to the Christian community in general; and especially that it may be read with satisfaction by the numerous friends, north, south, east, and west, with whom I have the happiness to be personally acquainted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Temperance Recollections: Labors, Defeats, Triumphs; An Autobiography Memory is a wonderful power of the mind. By it are brought the events of seventy years, fresh within the passing hour. By it we make a record of events and facts, whose verity few will be disposed to ques tion. But all that it holds, unless recorded, is gone in a moment when death touches the silver cord. As in the extinguishment of a lamp, all is darkness. NO man can remember for his brother. Book Autobiographical Recollections of Sir John Bowring

Download or read book Autobiographical Recollections of Sir John Bowring written by Lewin B. Bowring and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiographical Recollections of Sir John Bowring: With a Brief Memoir While arranging the papers of the late Sir John Bowring, I discovered a great number of autobiographical notes and recollections in his handwriting, which he had apparently intended some day to put into a connected shape. The majority of these fragments were composed about the year 1861, after his return from the East, but many were written when he was in China, while others again, relating to incidents in his earlier life, and to persons with whom he was then brought into contact, were recorded at the time. Unfortunately, these reminiscences were never collated nor revised by the writer, neither did he leave any instructions regarding their publication. Although therefore, the following pages comprise the more memorable experiences of a very varied life, and may be deemed worthy of preservation, they do not constitute a continuous or complete memoir; and while the task of eliminating doubtful matter has been comparatively easy, I feel that no one but the writer himself could have supplied what is defective, or have elucidated more fully those portions of his recollections which may seem to need more elaborate explanation. Book Recollections and Incidents of a Lifetime

Download or read book Recollections and Incidents of a Lifetime written by Philander Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Incidents of a Lifetime: Or Men and Things I Have Seen; In a Series of Familiar Letters to a Friend; Historical, Autobiographical, Anecdotal and Descriptive I will, therefore, invite you to go with me, in imagination, over the principal scenes I have witnessed, carrying you back to my boyhood days - to my early country life, in which I was born and bred. The history will be, essentially, a personal narrative - simple, commonplace, nothing marvelous, or out of the beaten track of common experience. In regard to many of the events I shall have occasion to describe, the character and characteristics of men and things I shall portray, my connection was only that of a spectator. How far the recollection of those early days will serve me as I try to arrange them upon the thread of my memory, remains to be seen; and I must crave your kind indulgence to overlook all mistakes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Long Life My father felt a deep interest in biography, but was persuaded that it should be confined within narrow limits. He thought that, as Dean Burgon said, while yet the man lived freshly in the memory of his friends, while his sayings were remembered, and his aspect and demeanor were easily recalled, then one who knew him well should commit to paper a living image of the man, should so exhibit him that later generations might feel that they had seen and known him. Many of the world's good men have no personal memorial because this was not done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wandering Recollections of a Somewhat Busy Life: An Autobiography I am called upon for a Preface. Like the "weary knife-grinder, when asked for a story, I am half tempted to answer, "Preface! God bless you! I've none to give, sir!" My book itself is only a Preface. And what, after all, is any Life but a preface? - a preface to something better - or worse? On the whole, therefore, I think it safer for me, and better for the reader, whom I hope to be on good terms with, before he gets through, whatever may be his present notions upon the subject, not to trouble him with a Preface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Reflections: An Auto of Half a Century and More If there is any merit in my desultory writings, having been a scribbler off and on through life, it consists in thor ough conviction and pointedness of expression. Those who object to that style might as well close the little volume. Rosewater and diluted catnip is repugnant to taste, and un suited to my genius. The field is already overcrowded with that sort, men who shun a positive, unequivocal expression of Opinion on men, measures, and policies, as they would a from a catapult.
