Book Auto Roto Font

Download or read book Auto Roto Font written by Frances Stark and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected Writing: 1993-2003 brings together many of Frances Stark's texts for the first time, including essays on artists and artist's [sic] text pieces. Stark's writing is not specifically sited in visual art, but is rooted in the condition of contemporary life encountering along the way the literary tradition, music and philosophy. These provide the backbone to much of her thinking, as do the problems faced by being both an artist and writer today. These themes are presented through a pseudo-autobiographical style which frequently presents itself as poetic musings, that create meandering, off-centred texts that are often humorous and at the same time highly readable. This book also includes facsimiles of &‘The Unspeakable Compromise of the Portable Work of Art' as well as specially designed pages by Stark, making this anthology a fascinating insight into the artist's practice. The book includes a forward [sic] by Matthew Higgs.

Book excerpt: Iconic Designs is a beautifully designed and illustrated guide to fifty classic 'things' – designs that we find in the city, in our homes and offices, on page and screen, and in our everyday lives. In her introduction, Grace Lees-Maffei explores what makes a design 'iconic', and fifty essays by leading design and cultural critics tell the story of each iconic 'thing', its innovative and unique qualities, and its journey to classic status. Subjects range from the late 19th century to the present day, and include the Sydney Opera House, the Post-It Note, Coco Chanel's classic suit, the Sony WalkmanTM, Hello KittyTM, the typeface Helvetica, the Ford Model T, Harry Beck's diagrammatic map of the London Underground and the Apple iMac G3. This handsome volume provides a treasure trove of 'stories' that will shed new light on the iconic designs that we use without thinking, aspire to possess, love or hate (or love to hate) and which form part of the fabric of our everyday lives.

Download or read book Letters of Credit written by Walter Tracy and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2003 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolution in typesetting - a revolution that over the past two decades has eliminated a five-hundred-year-old system of hot metal production and replaced it with one of photo-generated and computer-driven composition - shows no sign of winding down. This book, more than any other we know, traces the steps that went into that revolution and simultaneously makes the argument that the letter forms themselves are in process of evolution. Tracy argues that, whether they are of the sixteenth or the twentieth century, the forms that comprise our alphabet are subject to the same rules of good taste, proportion, and clarity that have always obtained. But what we face today is vastly different from fifty years ago. For the first time, new technology has made the proliferation (and, as some would maintain, debasement) of letter forms fast and easy (or quick and dirty.) With fifty years of professional experience on both sides of the Atlantic (including thirty years as head of type design for the British Linotype Company), Tracy is in a unique position to make this argument and arrive at his sad conclusion: the design of distinguished, contemporary typefaces is far outnumbered by the mediocre and downright bad. Part of the reason for this deplorable deterioration is a lack of critical analysis of the particular esthetics involved. This step-by-step examination of type-design esthetics is precisely what Tracy provides here, while avoiding both the promoter's hype and the manufacturer's claims. Here are the gut issues of what makes type good or bad, legible or unreadable. Extensively illustrated with both typefaces and line drawings, this book belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in thehistory of letters or in the artistry and peculiar problems that lie behind their production.

Book excerpt: "The Palaver is a pocket-sized book of images and texts by writer and film-maker Gad Hollander and artist Andrew Bick which functions as a story board for an imaginary film. It consists of photographs that have an elusive but familiar quality, sourced in various European locations with corresponding text. Each image presents a sense of deja-vu typical of the emotions felt whilst travelling. This feeling is compounded by the addition of blue line drawings super-imposed on each image that operate as a form of 'punctuation' and accentuate potential meanings within the work. The absence of punctuation in the text, coupled with the repetition of phrases that, in turn, echo the repetition of images in different 'edits' create a stream of consciousness that is pulled in and out of focus"--Book Works website.
