Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published to great acclaim in 2006, Dr. Stephen Olvey’s memoir Rapid Response makes a long-awaited return to print — complete with new text and an afterword by Dario Franchitti — at the same time as the release of a documentary feature film of the same title. This book is the compelling story of the author’s often tragic, sometimes funny, and frequently frustrating journey through the volatile world of professional motorsports. Along the way, he introduces many of the characters — geniuses, good guys, bad guys — that he has encountered during his quest to save lives and make motorsports safer. Among the racing legends with whom Dr. Olvey has worked — and who have their places in this book — are Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, A.J. Foyt, Graham Hill, Nigel Mansell, Rick Mears and Al Unser Jr. Dr. Olvey attended his first race, the 1955 Indianapolis 500, at the impressionable age of 11, and saw his favourite driver, Bill Vukovich, killed in a fiery crash while leading. He began working at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway while attending medical school, making his first professional appearance there in 1966, when his first on-track rescue involved Graham Hill in his rookie year. Dr. Olvey organised the first traveling medical team in motorsports and was eventually joined by long-time colleague and friend, Dr. Terry Trammell. Continuing to work together over several decades, Dr. Olvey and Dr. Trammell have used their study of the cause and effect of racing crashes and injuries to make significant advances in safety, with many lives saved and serious injuries avoided. The writer of the foreword is Alex Zanardi, whose life Dr. Olvey helped to save after a violent accident in Germany in 2001, and who subsequently returned not only to motorsports, but also to handcycling, becoming a three-time Paralympic gold medalist.

Book excerpt: Blazing down a straightaway at 200-plus miles per hour and barreling into a turn at 160mph is a thrill like no other. Book Swerve or Die

Download or read book Swerve or Die written by Kyle Petty and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *A Wall Street Journal, Southern Indie, and Publishers Weekly Bestseller* Stock-car racing star, country singer, and sports broadcaster Kyle Petty shares his familial legacy, intertwined with NASCAR’s founding and history, in Swerve or Die—written with Pulitzer Prize-winner Ellis Henican, the New York Times bestselling coauthor of In the Blink of an Eye. “Born into racing royalty. The only son of NASCAR’s winningest driver ever. The grandson of one of the sport’s true pioneers. The nephew of our very first Hall of Fame engine builder. It’s quite a family to represent, and through it all, I’ve somehow managed to keep being Kyle.” Kyle Petty won his very first stock-car race, the Daytona ARCA 200, in 1979 when he was eighteen. Hailed as a third-generation professional NASCAR racer, he became an instant celebrity in circles he had been around all his young life. Despite being the grandson and son of racing champions Lee Petty and Richard Petty, Kyle didn’t inherit innate talent. Working in his family’s North Carolina race shop from an early age, he learned all about car mechanics and maintenance long before he got behind the wheel. And although Kyle continued the family business, driving “Petty blue” colored cars emblazoned with his grandfather’s #42—a number once used by Marty Robbins—his career took a different route than his forebears’. In Swerve or Die: Life at My Speed in the First Family of NASCAR Racing, Kyle chronicles his life on and off the racetrack, presenting his insider’s perspective of growing up throughout the sport’s popular rise in American culture. In between driving and running Petty Enterprises for thirty years, Kyle took some detours into country music, voiced Cal Weathers in Pixar’s Cars 3, and started his annual motorcycle Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. And when his nineteen-year-old son Adam, a fourth-generation racing Petty, tragically lost his life on the track, Kyle founded Victory Junction, a camp for children with chronic and serious medical conditions in Adam’s name—with help from Academy Award-winning actor and motorsports enthusiast Paul Newman. Filled with NASCAR history, stories of his family’s careers, and anecdotes about some of stock-car racing’s most famous drivers, Kyle’s memoir also tackles the sport’s evolution, discussing how welcoming diverse racers, improving car and track safety features, and integrating green technology will benefit NASCAR’s competitors and fans in the future. Includes Photographs

Book excerpt: The first quarter of the 20th century was a time of dramatic change in auto racing, marked by the move from the horseless carriage to the supercharged Grand Prix racer, from the gentleman driver to the well-publicized professional, and from the dusty road course to the autodrome. This history of the evolution of European and American auto racing from 1900 to 1925 examines transatlantic influences, early dirt track racing, and the birth of the twin-cam engine and the straight-eight. • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book Running Up Front written by Ted Hull and published by . This book was released on 2015-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Running Up Front" will transport you from the grandstand to the pit lane, from your TV to turn four, so you'll never view stock car racing-or life-in the same way again. There is a message underneath the roar of engines, a view of life from the spotter's stand, and lessons to be learned during a thirteen-second pit stop. In the same way that winning race teams have access to virtually limitless resources, we can have access to the unlimited divine resources which fuel a successful life. Like spotters who have a broad view of the track, we need people in our lives who see things in and around us to which we are oblivious. Drivers can get caught up in crashes they didn't cause and can't avoid, just as we can be the victims of personal and relational wrecks. These are a few of the fifteen life lessons we can learn from stock car racing. Ted Hull draws on his own life experiences, including some of his wins and wrecks. His desire is that you will be encouraged and challenged to drive the race of your life that will have you "Running Up Front." ..".the One who put you behind the wheel will make sure that you have all that you need for running up front." -Mike Yorkey, author of the "Playing with Purpose" series and co-author of the "Every Man's Battle" series About the Author: Ted's passion for NASCAR, thirty years as a counselor and diverse life experiences are wrapped up in "Running Up Front." Although the closest NASCAR track is over eight hundred miles away, Ted has attended dozens of races and driven at the Richard Petty Driving Experience. If he always practiced the lessons he talks about in "Running Up Front," he admits that he'd be a better husband, father, friend, and colleague.
