Book excerpt: Grahame Kings life as an artist began with his mastery of the new art of colour reproduction as a photolithographic colour etcher in Melbourne in the 1930s. At the same time, study at the National Gallery Art School with George Bell assisted his development as a painter. After war service and travels abroad, King returned to Melbourne with his wife, the sculptor Inge King. The two held a number of joint exhibitions of paintings and sculptures in Australia throughout the 1950s and then, from c.1962 Grahame King turned his attention, increasingly, towards the art of lithography becoming a master in this field of printmaking. He has also devoted himself to promoting the art of lithography and printmaking generally through the Print Council of Australia. He is often called Australias patron saint of printmaking. The book examines his seven decades working as an artist in Melbourne and is lavishly illustrated with colour reproductions throughout.

Book excerpt: Featuring paintings and photographs, this beautifully illustrated collection exhibits how artists between the years of 1919 and 1945 recorded the coming of modernity to Australia. At a time when most artists were using rural subjects, these artists turned their attention to the tearing down of city centers and ordinary people at work and leisure, revealing an Australia that is familiar yet far from the iconic outback. From beaches photographed by Max Dupain to the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge captured by Grace Cossington Smith and Jessie Trail, this unveils a crossing into contemporary times that helped to define Australian art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring 54 portraits by 34 artists, Face takes a fresh look at Australian portraiture from the 1880s late colonial period to the mid-1960s and the move into abstraction. Face considers the international influences upon Australian portrait painting and the more distinctive turns that Australian portraiture has taken in its own right. Australian artists have often challenged the possibilities of portraiture, rejected the predictable and pushed boundaries in both their choice of subject and their painterly approach. Artists include Tom Roberts, George W. Lambert, Rupert Bunny, Margaret Preston, Grace Crowley, Napier Waller, Albert Tucker, Sidney Nolan, Russell Drysdale, and John Brack.
