Book Why Australia Prospered

Download or read book Why Australia Prospered written by Ian W. McLean and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive account of how Australia attained the world's highest living standards within a few decades of European settlement, and how the nation has sustained an enviable level of income to the present. Why Australia Prospered is a fascinating historical examination of how Australia cultivated and sustained economic growth and success. Beginning with the Aboriginal economy at the end of the eighteenth century, Ian McLean argues that Australia's remarkable prosperity across nearly two centuries was reached and maintained by several shifting factors. These included imperial policies, favorable demographic characteristics, natural resource abundance, institutional adaptability and innovation, and growth-enhancing policy responses to major economic shocks, such as war, depression, and resource discoveries. Natural resource abundance in Australia played a prominent role in some periods and faded during others, but overall, and contrary to the conventional view of economists, it was a blessing rather than a curse. McLean shows that Australia's location was not a hindrance when the international economy was centered in the North Atlantic, and became a positive influence following Asia's modernization. Participation in the world trading system, when it flourished, brought significant benefits, and during the interwar period when it did not, Australia's protection of domestic manufacturing did not significantly stall growth. McLean also considers how the country's notorious origins as a convict settlement positively influenced early productivity levels, and how British imperial policies enhanced prosperity during the colonial period. He looks at Australia's recent resource-based prosperity in historical perspective, and reveals striking elements of continuity that have underpinned the evolution of the country's economy since the nineteenth century.

Book Ungoverning the Economy

Download or read book Ungoverning the Economy written by Stephen Bell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ungoverning the Economy provides a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the politics and policy dynamics of economic policy making in Australia. The book argues that in the last twenty years there has been a transformation in Australian political economy along 'economic rationalist' lines and that this marks a significant departure from Australia's relatively statist political economy tradition. The dominance of market forces represents a process of ungoverning the economy, at leastas far as the role of elected governments in economic life is concerned. The causes and consequences of these changes are assessed in detail and the book argues that economic rationalist policies have failed to deal with Australia's most fundamental economic problems. Accordingly, there is a need to rethink economic policy and the book ends with constructive suggestions for policy reform. The book is written for a broad audience and seeks to widen the scope of economic debate.

Book Remaking New Zealand and Australian Economic Policy

Download or read book Remaking New Zealand and Australian Economic Policy written by Shaun Goldfinch and published by Victoria University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980s and early 1990s, both Australia and New Zealand extensively deregulated their economies, moving to become amongst the most liberal economies in the OECD. Shaun Goldfinch interviewed more than 180 leading policy makers in Australia and New Zealand, including former prime ministers, ministers of finance, treasurers, public servants and other policy elites, and examined primary government sources to demonstrate the reasons and processes involved in this remarkable period of economic reform. This major comparative study sheds new light on ecnomic policy-making and change, including the role of economic ideas and the importance of institutions and policy communities. It contrasts the 'crash through' approach that characterised reform in New Zealand with the 'bargained consensus' that underpinned changes in Australia. Finally it asks the critical question, 'Has the New Zealand approach to policy change delivered better policy outcomes?'

Book A Decade after the Global Recession

Download or read book A Decade after the Global Recession written by M. Ayhan Kose and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year marks the tenth anniversary of the 2009 global recession. Most emerging market and developing economies weathered the global recession relatively well, in part by using the sizable fiscal and monetary policy ammunition accumulated during prior years of strong growth. However, their growth prospects have weakened since then, and many now have less policy space. This study provides the first comprehensive stocktaking of the past decade from the perspective of emerging market and developing economies. Many of these economies have now become more vulnerable to economic shocks. The study discusses lessons from the global recession and policy options for these economies to strengthen growth and prepare for the possibility of another global downturn.

Book Inclusive Growth in Australia

Download or read book Inclusive Growth in Australia written by John Buchanan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive Growth in Australia overturns two decades of assumptions that social policy is wasteful and a source of dependency. It reflects a global resurgence of the understanding that an active and effective social policy regime is vital not only for a flourishing society, but also for a strong economy. It explains this new paradigm of inclusive growth and shows how it can be implemented in Australia. Inclusive growth dismantles the idea that social development will automatically trickle down from untrammelled market based growth. Rather, growth must be managed so that it is employment centred, broad based across sectors and with a social security system promoting sustainability and equality of opportunity. The editors argue that productivity is 'nearly everything' when it comes to raising living standards. So while social policies will be about goals other than the economy, they must demonstrate their compatibility with an economic growth strategy. With contributions from leading national and international experts in the field including Marian Baird, Grant Belchamber, Gerald Burke, Saul Eslake, Roy Green and Peter Whiteford, Inclusive Growth in Australia shows that 'welfare state' spending is as much an economic investment as a measure of social protection. Written for policy makers, industry and NGOs as well as students, Inclusive Growth in Australia locates Australian economic and social policy within the most important emergent themes shaping international debate.
