Download or read book Melbourne Victoria Tasmania written by Holly Smith and published by Hunter Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, a native Australian, covers everything you might want to know about Australia - guaranteed! The places to stay, from budget to luxury, rentals to B&Bs, the restaurants, from fast food to the highest quality, the beachwalks and bushwalks, the wildlife and how to see it, exploring the country by air, on water, by bike, and every other way. Following are a few excerpts from the guide: The gathering of landscapes within the compact state of Victoria seem as if a giant had taken different pieces from around the continent, squashed them together and shaken them up, and then tossed them to let them fall where they may. The awesome, wave-lashed coastal edges are among the state's classic sights, with crumpled pillars of orange rock stacked tall out in the water. Where the shores aren't rough, the beaches are silky and white, as soft and tame as a kitten, with cold but gentle waters. Behind this edge are thick patches of temperate rainforests leading up into drier locales, including inland deserts, an unmade bed of mountain foothills and folds, and smooth river marshes and plains. You'd never expect that much of the terrain here was once actually volcanic, resulting in wild peaks, bluffs, and valleys throughout the center. There's 227,600 sq km of land in the state, and the Great Dividing Range arches through the center of it, with major collections of peaks in the Dandenongs and Macedons. The highest summits are in the east, at 1,986-m (6,514-ft) Mt. Bogong and 1,922-m (6,304-ft) Mt. Feathertop, and snowfields are found throughout the northeastern Australian Alps from June to September. Hemming in the land are 1,800 km (1,116 mi) of coastlines along the Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean, with Melbourne and Geelong fronting the central cut inland to Port Phillip Bay. This is a cool state, akin to the Pacific Northwest or the lower New England states of the U.S., with warm summers but chilling, wet winters. Some regions do dip below freezing, namely the northeastern mountains, while the Gippsland highlands in the east and the western Otway Ranges see more rain than anywhere else. Skip a couple hours south or west and you'll hit the arid Mallee region, and the Little Desert and Big Desert national park areas. Farmlands fill in the gaps, where orchards and vineyards are filled with apples, grapes, oranges, and other citrus fruits. Main crops are grains and vegetables, the fields fronting huge dairy farms or sheep and cattle ranches. Tasmania is offshore from Victoria. The name "Tasmania" is one of the world's most intriguing, and it rightfully sounds such as one of the most fascinating places on earth. And, yes, it's a heck of a journey to reach this offshore Australian state - but once you're here, if you're adventurous, you won't want to leave. Indeed, the island state of Tasmania is ripe for adventure. A heart-shaped, mountainous landmass 298 km (185 mi) southeast of the main Australian continent, it's covered with forests, threaded with rivers, and edged by wild, rugged beaches and bays. Its wilderness comprises an international Heritage Site of its own, filled with some of the world's oldest and most unusual plants, animals that are found nowhere else on earth, rock formations that span every geological era, and among the longest underground tunnels ever found. The capital of Hobart, where almost half the island's residents live, is tucked into the southeastern edge, and the sleepy northern ferry town of Devonport brings in visitors from the mainland. No one ventures far, though, which leaves the majority of the island open to exploring and free of crowds, even at the loveliest of national wonders such as Tasman National Park in the southeast, Freycinet National Park in the east, and Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park in the west.

Book Representing the Sporting Past in Museums and Halls of Fame

Download or read book Representing the Sporting Past in Museums and Halls of Fame written by Murray G. Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a "museum age," and sport museums are part of this phenomenon. In this book, leading international sport history scholars examine sport museums including renowned institutions like the Olympic Museum in the Swiss city of Lausanne, the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum in Baltimore, the Marylebone Cricket Club Museum in London, the Croke Park Museum in Dublin, and the Whyte Museum in Banff. These institutions are examined in a broad context of understanding sport museums as an identifiable genre in the "museum age", and more specifically in terms of how the sporting past is represented in these museums. Historians explain, debate and critique sport museums with the intention of understanding how this important form of public history represents sport for audiences who see museums as institutions that are inherently reliable and trustworthy.

Book Sports around the World 4 volumes

Download or read book Sports around the World 4 volumes written by John Nauright and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-04-06 with total page 2668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume set is much more than a collection of essays on sports and sporting cultures from around the world: it also details how and why sports are played wherever they exist, and examines key charismatic athletes from around the world who have transcended their sports. Sports Around the World: History, Culture, and Practice provides a unique, global overview of sports and sports cultures. Unlike most works of this type, this book provides both essays that examine general topics, such as globalization and sport, international relations and sport, and tourism and sport, as well as essays on sports history, culture, and practice in world regions—for example, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and Oceania—in order to provide a more global perspective. These essays are followed by entries on specific sports, world athletes, stadiums and arenas, famous games and matches, and major controversies. Spanning topics as varied as modern professional cycling to the fictional movie Rocky to the deadly ball game of the ancient Mayans, the first three volumes contain overview essays and entries for specific sports that have been and are currently practiced around the world. The fourth volume provides a compendium of information on the winners of major sporting competitions from around the world. Readers will gain invaluable insights into how sports have been enjoyed throughout all of human culture, and more fully comprehend their cultural contexts. The entries provide suggestions for further reading on each topic—helpful to general readers, students with school projects, university students and academics alike. Additionally, the four-volume Sports Around the World spotlights key charismatic athletes who have changed a sport or become more than just an outstanding player.

Download or read book Halls of Fame written by David Blevins and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hall of fame concept, once limited primarily to sports, is growing rapidly as more groups, organizations and associations are building shrines to honor their past, highlight their heroes and display their artifacts and memorabilia. It is estimated that there are at least 500 physical halls of fame throughout the world, a vast majority of them located in the United States. Whatever the actual number, this work documents more than 450 of them in more than 45 states and 15 countries. In addition to the halls of fame that most readers would expect to find, such as the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the World Golf Hall of Fame, this work includes many more obscure halls of fame, such as the American Furniture Hall of Fame, Burlesque Hall of Fame, Cartoon Hall of Fame, Casino Legends Hall of Fame, Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, Crayola Hall of Fame, Quackery Hall of Fame, and the World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame. The entries provide contact information, including the hall's address and telephone number, and in most instances, its fax number, website and email address, and hours of operation. The entries also alert readers to admission charges and provide a brief history of the hall and a list of notable inductees.

Book The Bradman Museum s World of Cricket

Download or read book The Bradman Museum s World of Cricket written by Mike Coward and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 2014-15 season Australia stages the eleventh ICC World Cup of Cricket, with fourteen nations competing in 49 fifty-over matches. At the same time the Bradman Museum, a monument to the greatest cricketer of all time, celebrates its 25th anniversary. To mark that milestone at a time when the eyes of the cricketing world will be on Australia, this book reveals for the first time in print the founding treasure of the Bradman Museum: the Don's personal collection of 35-mm slides. With Bradman's typed commentary and handwritten amendments alongside, the slides showcase the history of cricket, from its agrarian beginnings in England to its status as a game of Empire, fit for introduction to the colonies. Grace, Hobbs, Hendren, Larwood, O'Reilly, McCabe, Lindwall, Trueman - on these legends and many more Bradman gives us his opinion with characteristic directness. We gain insight into the game as he saw it in all its magic. While Bradman's personal slide collection forms the centrepiece of this stunning collection, the work of three of cricket's greatest photographers are also featured. Among Bruce Postle's black and white photos from the 1960s and 70s are iconic shots that will thrill any cricket lover. Vivian Jenkins' work brings to life the drama of the 1970s and World Series Cricket, while Philip Brown's camera ranges across international cricket up to the present day. This treasure trove of cricket is woven seamlessly together by the matchless commentary of Mike Coward, one of Australia's most acclaimed experts.

Download or read book The Tourism Industry written by M. Thea Sinclair and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few decades tourism has emerged as one of the world's major industries, exceeding in importance many manufacturing industries and other services in terms of sales, employment and foreign currency earnings. Despite the publication of a growing number of books on tourism covering geographical, marketing and regional aspects , few take a general analytical but international approach to the tourism industry. This book aims to fill this gap in the literature, concentrating particularly on the internationalizaiton of the tourism industry and the interaction between it, the consumer and destination areas. Insights are provided from a range of disciplines: economics, geography, psychology, anthropology and sociology. This book will therefore interest academics and students of tourism, business and management, as well as planners and practitioners in the tourism sector.

Bradman's career Test batting average of 99.94 has been claimed to be statistically the greatest achievement in any major sport. The story that the young Bradman practised alone with a cricket stump and a golf ball is part of Australian folklore. Bradman's meteoric rise from bush cricket to the Australian Test team took just over two years. Before his 22nd birthday, he had set many records for high scoring, some of which still stand, and became Australia's sporting idol at the height of the Great Depression. During a 20-year playing career, Bradman consistently scored at a...
