Book excerpt: The New Churches of Europe is primarily concerned with that one room in each religious complex which constitutes the rationale of its being: the room for worship. Ancillary adjuncts provided for educational and social activities, offices, quarters for priest or minister, etc, generally are omitted as being peripheral to the far more trying task of the design of the nave. Moreover, the book does not explore in detail, except where pertinent, building techniques or construction, nor does it go into costs either on an overall or cubic basis. Such factors, though admittedly important, vary so much from country to country, and can be so misleading, that it was thought wiser - given limited space - to concentrate on the message of the forest and only nod to the trees. The author's original intent was to include at least twenty more churches, and to call on parts of many others in substantially illustrated analytical sections of the introduction. However, the severe economics of today's publishing prohibited this. Deep apologies are sincerely extended to those kind architects who generously sent requested material, yet whose churches at the last minute - and for reasons that had little to do with quality - could not be included.

But what is happening now is not solely attributable to what began as a mortgage crisis; many of the causes lie deeper, and go back further than a few years. In a way, the recession has simply accelerated, and exacerbated, various pre-existing trends. Without overstating the case, the West, and above all Europe, is undergoing such major change at the beginning of the twenty-first century that it is no longer logical to expect the future to be simply an extrapolation and continuation of the recent past. And this could well have far-reaching consequences for architecture. Of course, this is not the first time that people have declared that things will never be the same again. And up to now reality has usually turned out to be a good deal better than predicted. But there are reasons why architects in Europe should consider the possibility that this time it really might turn out differently.

European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018 brings together a selection of some of the most significant and representative examples of European architecture and design created by 100 women from the end of the First World War up until today. The number of works is symbolic, as ‘one hundred’ could also mean ‘countless’ as in the Latin word centium. While, the number of authors –each work has a different author– derives from MoMoWo’s choice to represent many different creators, consequently popularising lesser known figures, too. It includes biographies of women architects, civil engineers, furniture and industrial designers, urban planners, interior and landscape designers. It represents the main trends and major ‘schools’ of architecture and design all over Europe. The biographical data covers education and training, professional histories, networks women have operated in, including informal societies, memberships in trade bodies and associations, their profile as international, national, local and regional designers, as well as looking at how women have promoted their work i.e. in exhibitions, publications, competition entries, etc. The catalogue entries are followed by thirteen thematic essays on women architects and designers and by the outdoor exhibition catalogue “Women’s Tale.
