This book deconstructs the polarity that divides and binds lyric and narrative means of representation in Horace's Odes. While myth is a canonical feature of Pindaric epinician, Horace cannot adopt the Pindaricmode for aesthetic and political reasons. Roman Callimacheanism's privileging of the small and elegant offers a pretext for Horace to shrink from the difficulty of writing praise poetry in the wake of civil war. But Horace by no means excludes story-telling from his enacted lyric. On the formallevel, numerous odes contain narration. Together they constitute a larger narrative told over the course of Horace's two lyric collections. Horace tells the story of his development as a lyricist and of the competing aesthetic and political demands on his lyric poetry. At issue is whether he canever truly become a poet of praise.

Floch's major strength is his analysis of signs in a way which is both industrially relevant and textually precise. Industry-based work has tended to look at questions of marketing and has often been reduced to the mass psychology of 'appeal' and audience research, whereas the textual analysis of commerical signs has tended to come from limited positions of identity politics and criticism (Marxism, feminism, etc). Floch manages to find a way between (and also outside) these traditions. In doing so he has produced a book which will interest industrial practitioners in advertising, marketing and design as well as students and academics in semiotics.

The intricate network of umpteen nerve cells connect together in myriad ways to create what is considered evolution's magnum opus, till now any way. Outstanding physical deeds have often been ascribed to people under deep pressure. They phrase it "adrenaline rush". A "fight-or-flight" response of our body that enables us to cross distinctive limits placed on our bodies and allows us to function, for some time at least, in a superhuman-like state. Our mind realizes that we are in a pressure-situation and somehow lifts us to extricate ourselves from the confronting situation. Now, all this is usually associated only with physical deeds, but we can extrapolate it to other situations too. If we just focus our mind on something and work hard to realize it, there is no reason that we will not. "You can have anything in this world you want, if you want it badly enough and you're willing to pay the price", said Mary Kay Ash, an American businesswoman and founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc. Well she should know. Having faced quite a few difficulties in her life and having come up trumps, showing grit and fortitude to carve a niche for herself and her company, she would be the right person to expect this kind of a message from, as it comes from long and hard experience. Not something to be scoffed at. Very often the difference between failure and triumph is but a wafer-thin layer of uncertainty. If one puts in a bit more effort into one's work, it may make all the difference in the world. Even if disappointments hound one at first, in the end, with perseverance and poise, we can achieve our goals. We should keep our target in mind and believe that we can reach it. Belief is the main issue here. Very often it is not a question of aptitude. It is more about the cerebral make-up of the people involved. Whoever believes in himself or herself is able to get a psychological edge and in the end, sometimes this psychosomatic edge is all that is needed.INCLUSIVE GROWTH is all about such a need and much more. Inclusive Growth is the modern mantra of survival and the bedrock of democracy and humanism. It is the sine qua non of peace and universal brotherhood and raison d'etre of the modern concepts of the fundamental rights. Some layers of the inclusive growth are discussed in this volume.

It explores the ways in which the perception of certain characteristics of Russia and Eastern Europe, whether real or attributed, was shaped by (and used for) the construction of a liberal narrative of the West, which eventually became dominant. The focus of this inquiry is French culture, from the beginning of the debate about Russia among the philosophes (c.1740) to the consolidation of a professional field of Slavic studies (c.1880). A wide range of writing - literature, travel accounts, histories, political tracts, scientific journals, and parliamentary debates - is examined through the work of major authors (from Montesquieu, Diderot and Rousseau to Tocqueville, de Maistre and Guizot, from Mme. de Staël, Hugo and Balzac to Dumas, Michelet and Comte), as well as that of many less well known figures. The book also explores possible continuities between those first academic accounts of Russia and Eastern Europe and present-day scholarship in Europe and the USA, to show that the liberal ideological accounts constructed in the nineteenth century still to a great extent inform contemporary academic studies.

The distant preverbal past is however still present in live speech. Phonetic, syntactic and semantic rule transgressions, far from being products of a deficient output, are governed by a universal iconic apparatus, a sort of ‘anti-grammar’ or ‘proto-grammar’ which enables the speaker and the poet to express preconscious and subconscious mental contents that could not be conveyed by means of the grammar of any language. Secondary messages, generated by the proto-grammar are integrated into the primary grammatical message. The two messages whose structural and semantic divergence represents a chronological distance of hundreds of thousands of years, constitute a dialectic unity which characterize natural languages.
