Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem management has gained widespread visibility as an approach to the management of land to achieve sustainable natural resource use. Despite widespread interest in this emerging management paradigm, Ecosystems: Balancing Science with Management is the first book to directly propose approaches for implementing ecosystem management, give examples of viable tools, and discuss the potential implications of implementing an ecosystem approach. These ideas are framed in a historical context that examines the disjunction between ecological theory, environmental legislation and natural resources management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributors to this volume offer new research on extinction processes in birds, nest predation, and song systems, and describes a graphical model that helps predict the reproductive consequences of time allocation between the competing demands of guarding young birds and foraging for food. Current Ornithology is the only English-language publication currently devoted exclusively to extensive reviews and synthesis of topics pertaining to all aspects of the biology of birds. Chapters fall under such diverse rubrics as ecology, evolution, behavior, phylogeny, behavioral ecology, anatomy and physiology, and conservation biology. All authors are leading authorities on their subjects, and each chapter is refereed by experts in the topics covered. Although all chapters focus primarily on birds, some topics, such as the social cognition of birds as compared to primates (Volume 13), have significant application to disciplines outside of ornithology. Current Ornithology aims to provide an accessible, up-to-date, accurate source of data and to contribute to conceptual generalization and unification across the biological sciences.

Book Audubon Wildlife Report 1989 1990

Download or read book Audubon Wildlife Report 1989 1990 written by William J. Chandler and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audubon Wildlife Report 1989/1990 covers important challenges to the continued health of different species and ecosystems, furthering the debate on issues such as old-growth forests, the relationship between water and wildlife, and the need to preserve and restore wetlands and grassland range territory. The book starts by providing a comprehensive overview of the featured federal agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including its history, legislative mandate, and key programs that affect the environment. The text then discusses federal court decisions that provide new interpretations of federal wildlife law; the conservation of coastal wetlands in the Southeast; and global climate change and its potential effects on fish and wildlife. A monitoring and research strategy for nongame migratory birds, as well as the conservation of ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest are also considered. The book further tackles the restoration of the public rangelands in the West; discard bycatch in marine fisheries with a special focus on the Gulf of Mexico; and the trends in western water law and their implications for the environment. The text also encompasses the appropriations and related congressional policy directives for federal fish and wildlife programs. Biologists and people with an advocacy of preserving wildlife will find the book invaluable.

Book The Biology of Deer

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert D. Brown
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461227828
  • Pages : 604 pages

Download or read book The Biology of Deer written by Robert D. Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first International Conference on the Biology of Deer Production was held at Dunedin, New Zealand in 1983. That meeting provided, for the first time, a forum for those with interests in either wild deer management or farmed deer production to come together. Scientists, wild deer managers, domestic deer farmers, veterinarians, venison and antler product producers, and others were able to discuss common problems and to share their knowledge and experience. The relationships formed at that meeting, and the information amassed in the resulting Proceedings, sparked new endeavors in cervid research, management, and production. A great deal has taken place in the world of deer biology since 1983. Wild deer populations, although ever increasing in many areas of the world, face new hazards of habitat loss, environmental contamination, and overexploitation. Some species are closer to extinction than ever. Game managers often face political as well as biological challenges. Many more deer are now on farms, leading to greater concerns about disease control and increased needs for husbandry information. Researchers have accumulated considerable new in formation, some of it in areas such as biochemical genetics, not discussed in 1983.
