The aim of this Research Topic is to contribute to the development of auditory neuroscience by placing in an up-to-date morphological context some of the latest developments in the field. This Research Topic for Frontiers in Neuroanatomy will consist of peer-reviewed articles dealing with the development, evolution, function and plasticity of the auditory system through a broad range of anatomical approaches. Articles combining neuroanatomy with other disciplines, such as molecular biology, genetics, physiology, pharmacology, behavior, neuroimaging, clinical medicine or bioinformatics, will be considered for publication insofar as they contribute to the understanding of the structure of the auditory regions of the central nervous system. The authors of the papers published in this Research Topic will be invited to present and discuss their results during a symposium organized by the Instituto de Neurociencias of Castilla y León (INCyL), to be held in Salamanca, Spain, in 2010.

The ability of hearers to identify and localize these signals depends on analysis of their spectral composition. For the overwhelming majority of human listeners spoken language is the major means of social communication, and this communication therefore depends on spectral analysis. Spectral analysis begins in the cochlea, but is then elaborated at various stages along the auditory pathways in the brain that lead from the cochlea to the cerebral cortex. This text also discusses in detail the neurophysiological basis for discriminating frequency and time. This discrimination refers in particular to (1) the ability to distinguish two sounds on the basis of their frequencies when the two sounds are not presented at the same time; and (2) the ability to discriminate one spectral component in a complex sound that contains several spectral components. This book notes that for low frequencies, temporal analysis is more useful in processing complex sounds than the simple determination of energy in different frequency bands. Research shows that particular spatial patterns of response to different characteristic of complex sounds can exist, which are not feature detectors such as neurons specifically tuned to special and complex properties of a certain stimulus. This book can prove beneficial for physiologists, neurobiologists, neurophysiologists, general medical practioners, and EENT specialists.

Airborne sound information is captured by the ears, transformed to neural electrical signals, and then processed in the brain. Readers will find full descriptions of these processes of signal transduction and transformation. First, it is described how, at the level of hair cells, the receptor cells in the cochlea, the sound-evoked vibration is transduced to electrical signals and transmitted to the auditory nerve fibers. In the second section it is explained how the electrical activity of these fibers is processed at the cochlear nucleus in order to extract the temporal and level information of sound separately and then transmitted to the third nucleus for processing of the interaural differences, such as the interaural time difference and the interaural level difference. The third section summarizes the transformation of auditory temporal information to the rate of neural firing activity in the midbrain and the higher nuclei, including the cortex, based on in vivo results. Finally, emerging new technologies to investigate auditory signal processing are reviewed and discussed.

While many animal species communicate and exchange information using sound, humans are unique in the complexity of the information that can be conveyed using speech, and in the range of ideas, thoughts and emotions that can be expressed. Despite the importance of speech communication for the entire structure of human society, there are many aspects of this process that are not fully understood. One problem is that research on speech and language is typically carried out by different groups of scientists working on separate aspects of the underlying functional and neural systems. On the one hand, research from an auditory perspective focuses on the acoustical properties of speech sounds, their representation in the auditory system, and how that representation is used to extract phonetic information. On the other hand, research from psycholinguistic perspectives examines the processes by which representations of meaning are extracted from the acoustic-phonetic sequence, and how these are linked to the construction of higher-level linguistic interpretation in terms of sentences and discourse. Till now, there has been relatively little interaction between speech researchers from these two groups, in spite of a dramatic expansion in recent years of research into the neural bases of auditory and linguistic functions. This book bridges the gap between these two lines of research, recognising that both have the same aims in understanding how the motor gestures of a speaker are transformed to sounds and how those are mapped onto meaning in the comprehension of spoken language.
