Book Rationality and Religious Commitment

Download or read book Rationality and Religious Commitment written by Robert Audi and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rationality and Religious Commitment shows how religious commitment can be rational and describes the place of faith in the postmodern world. It portrays religious commitment as far more than accepting doctrines—it is viewed as a kind of life, not just as an embrace of tenets. Faith is conceived as a unique attitude. It is irreducible to belief but closely connected with both belief and conduct, and intimately related to life's moral, political, and aesthetic dimensions. Part One presents an account of rationality as a status attainable by mature religious people—even those with a strongly scientific habit of mind. Part Two describes what it means to have faith, how faith is connected with attitudes, emotions, and conduct, and how religious experience may support it. Part Three turns to religious commitment and moral obligation and to the relation between religion and politics. It shows how ethics and religion can be mutually supportive even though ethics provides standards of conduct independently of theology. It also depicts the integrated life possible for the religiously committed—a life with rewarding interactions between faith and reason, religion and science, and the aesthetic and the spiritual. The book concludes with two major accounts. One explains how moral wrongs and natural disasters are possible under God conceived as having the knowledge, power, and goodness that make such evils so difficult to understand. The other account explores the nature of persons, human and divine, and yields a conception that can sustain a rational theistic worldview even in the contemporary scientific age.

Book Little Book of the Audi Quattro

Download or read book Little Book of the Audi Quattro written by Stan Fowler and published by Green Umbrella Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Book of the Audi Quattro is a 128-page hardback book written by Stan Fowler and Charlotte Morgan. Developed using four wheel drive technology, the Audi quattro stands out as one of the most revolutionary sports cars ever built. From its debut in the 1980s, the quattro was set to steal the show and it went on to do just that both on and off road. Today, it is a much loved classic with fans and quattro enthusiasts the world over. Originally, Audi had intended to produce just 400 quattros to be used in rally driving, but in the end, nearly 11,500 vehicles were built for a hungry export market. The car was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1980 and as the first four-wheel drive grand tourer since 1966 it caused a sensation. The car became one of the most significant rally cars of all time when it was one of the first to take advantage of the changed rules in competition racing allowing a four-wheel drive to participate. Critics were sceptical that a four-wheel drive could achieve as near as much momentum, power and versatility. They were to be proved wrong.

Book Robert Audi Critical Engagements

Download or read book Robert Audi Critical Engagements written by Johannes Müller-Salo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the 20th Münster Lectures in Philosophy with Robert Audi. In the last decades, Audi's work has deeply influenced different important philosophical discussions, ranging from epistemology, theory of action, and philosophy of rationality to ethics, philosophy of religion, and political philosophy. The critical examinations collected in this book reflect the breadth of Audi's contributions in discussing topics as diverse as epistemological foundationalism and the theory of testimony, ethical intuitionism, the problem of evil and religion's public place within a liberal democracy. Besides his replies to each critical engagement, the volume contains an extensive essay on the problems of perception and cognition written by Audi himself. This volume will be of enormous use to all scholars interested in the younger history of American philosophy and one of its leading figures. It will also appeal to philosophers and curious readers with an interest in the endeavor of designing a comprehensive theory of rationality and human reasoning.

Book Audi R8 30 Years of Quattro Awd

Download or read book Audi R8 30 Years of Quattro Awd written by Alan Crawford and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a small assembly line in Neckarsulm, Germany, no more than twenty exotic Audi R8 sports cars are built daily. The entire process is overseen by small teams of specialists that oversee every step of production. Every single part is inspected carefully, and nothing goes unchecked. It is a level of hand-built quality one might expect to find in a Ferrari Enzo or the Vector W8A of the 1980s, but almost unheard of from a manufacturer the size of Audi AG. The Turbo Quattro Coupe (or Urquattro) of the early 1980s was largely assembled by hand much in the same way, but Audi has refined the process for the R8 and has introduced one of the most spectacular sports cars ever. I hope this book will provide a better insight into the design, development, and production of this magnificent automobile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audi is a playful, young sea turtle who finds himself in desperate times when he is swallowed by a whale. Fortunately for Audi, he is not alone! Jonah's prayer for comfort is answered in Audi. The tiny turtle was on a mission from God ... He just didn't know it yet. Audi, whose name means to hear, obeys the heartfelt messages he gets from the Holy Spirit to comfort Jonah in his darkest hours. Nothing could have prepared this miniature sea turtle for his amazing adventure. By obeying God's prompting, Audi experiences the blessing that comes with it: freedom! Audi and the Whale is a story about obedience, and all the challenges it entails. Without knowing it, Audi models obedience for Jonah, who like us, is in need of a reminder. Based on the Bible story of Jonah and the Whale and the biblical truths: "Please obey the LORD in what I am saying to you, that it may go well with you and you may live" (Jeremiah 38:20) and "Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights" (Jonah 1:17). Let Audi's faith, the faith of a small child, inspire you not only to listen ... but to hear.

Book The Good in the Right

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Audi
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2009-01-10
  • ISBN : 1400826071
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Good in the Right written by Robert Audi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the most comprehensive account to date of an important but widely contested approach to ethics--intuitionism, the view that there is a plurality of moral principles, each of which we can know directly. Robert Audi casts intuitionism in a form that provides a major alternative to the more familiar ethical perspectives (utilitarian, Kantian, and Aristotelian). He introduces intuitionism in its historical context and clarifies--and improves and defends--W. D. Ross's influential formulation. Bringing Ross out from under the shadow of G. E. Moore, he puts a reconstructed version of Rossian intuitionism on the map as a full-scale, plausible contemporary theory. A major contribution of the book is its integration of Rossian intuitionism with Kantian ethics; this yields a view with advantages over other intuitionist theories (including Ross's) and over Kantian ethics taken alone. Audi proceeds to anchor Kantian intuitionism in a pluralistic theory of value, leading to an account of the perennially debated relation between the right and the good. Finally, he sets out the standards of conduct the theory affirms and shows how the theory can help guide concrete moral judgment. The Good in the Right is a self-contained original contribution, but readers interested in ethics or its history will find numerous connections with classical and contemporary literature. Written with clarity and concreteness, and with examples for every major point, it provides an ethical theory that is both intellectually cogent and plausible in application to moral problems.

Book Practical Reasoning and Ethical Decision

Download or read book Practical Reasoning and Ethical Decision written by Robert Audi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the most comprehensive and lucid account of the topic currently available, Robert Audi's "Practical Reasoning and Ethical Decision" is essential reading for anyone interested in the role of reason in ethics or the nature of human action. The first part of the book is a detailed critical overview of the influential theories of practical reasoning found in Aristotle, Hume and Kant, whilst the second part examines practical reasoning in the light of important topics in moral psychology - weakness of will, self-deception, rationalization and others. In the third part, Audi describes the role of moral principles in practical reasoning and clarifies the way practical reasoning underlies ethical decisions. He formulates a comprehensive set of concrete ethical principles, explains how they apply to reasoning about what to do, and shows how practical reasoning guides moral conduct.

Book Moral Perception

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Audi
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2013-02-24
  • ISBN : 0691156484
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Moral Perception written by Robert Audi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-24 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can see a theft, hear a lie, and feel a stabbing. These are morally important perceptions. But are they also moral perceptions--distinctively moral responses? In this book, Robert Audi develops an original account of moral perceptions, shows how they figure in human experience, and argues that they provide moral knowledge. He offers a theory of perception as an informative representational relation to objects and events. He describes the experiential elements in perception, illustrates moral perception in relation to everyday observations, and explains how moral perception justifies moral judgments and contributes to objectivity in ethics. Moral perception does not occur in isolation. Intuition and emotion may facilitate it, influence it, and be elicited by it. Audi explores the nature and variety of intuitions and their relation to both moral perception and emotion, providing the broadest and most refined statement to date of his widely discussed intuitionist view in ethics. He also distinguishes several kinds of moral disagreement and assesses the challenge it poses for ethical objectivism. Philosophically argued but interdisciplinary in scope and interest, Moral Perception advances our understanding of central problems in ethics, moral psychology, epistemology, and the theory of the emotions.
