Book Translating and Comparing Languages Corpus based Insights

Download or read book Translating and Comparing Languages Corpus based Insights written by Sylviane Granger and published by Presses universitaires de Louvain. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains selected proceedings from the fifth edition of the Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies (UCCTS) international conference held at the University of Louvain in September 2018. It brings together thirteen chapters that all make use of electronic comparable and/or parallel corpora to inform contrastive linguistics, translation theory, translation pedagogy, translation quality assessment and multilingual terminology. The volume is structured in five thematic sections, devoted to learner-focused descriptive translation studies, corpus use in translator training, studies of translated and edited language, contrastive linguistics, and terminology. Together, the contributions in the volume reflect recent developments in corpus-based cross-linguistic studies, such as the compilation and analysis of learner translation corpora to identify the typical features of learner translated language and inform translator training, the comparative analysis of translation and other forms of mediated communication, such as editing, the compilation of new multilingual corpora and the analysis of under-researched linguistic phenomena, such as punctuation. The volume also testifies to the growing cross-fertilization between contrastive linguistics and translation studies, both in terms of methodology (e.g. the combined use of different types of corpora and the exploration of corpus-driven methods) and theory (e.g. the role played by source language influence and cross-linguistic contrasts in translation).

Book excerpt: From the Preface... Welcome to the academic study of world religions. The Latin title of this textbook, Sapere Aude, is the famous 18th-century motto of the European Enlightenment, a movement that sought to break with the narrow thought and blind faith of the so-called Dark Ages, in order to promote critical thinking, rational objectivity and cultural tolerance. This phrase was coined by the ancient Latin poet, Horace, but recast for the Enlightenment by the famous German philosopher, Immanuel Kant. Sapere Aude is an imperative and is often translated as "Dare to Think!" This will be our goal as we proceed. This textbook is also a workbook containing exercises on basic information regarding the five primary religions. After each lesson of each unit there is a short list of key terms, names, events, etc., found easily in bold print in the text itself, to be briefly identified in the spaces provided. Students should compose these identifications in their own words. This book, along with a copy of the online images (accessed per syllabus instructions), is the only material students will need while participating in the online discussions and while taking the online exams. I hope students and all readers will find this an informative textbook and a rewarding workbook.

Book Telemedicine in Low Resource Settings

Download or read book Telemedicine in Low Resource Settings written by Richard Wootton and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telemedicine networks to support healthcare workers in resource-limited settings (often for humanitarian purposes) have evolved over the last decade or so in a largely autonomous way. Communication between them has been informal and relatively limited in scope. This situation could be improved by developing a comprehensive approach to the collection and dissemination of information. A recent review identified seven telemedicine networks, each of which had been in operation for at least five years and which provided store-and-forward telemedicine services to doctors in low- and middle-income countries. These networks provide clinically useful services and improved healthcare access. However, like much of telemedicine, the formal evidence for their cost-effectiveness remains weak. Topics of current research interest therefore include the cost-effectiveness of telemedicine in resource-limited settings. Outcomes data (and methods for gathering it) such as patient quality of life following a telemedicine episode, the knowledge-gain of healthcare staff involved in telemedicine, and staff recruitment and retention in rural areas are also of interest. Finally, there is little published information about the performance of these telemedicine networks (and methods for measuring it), about how best to manage them, and about how to share resources between them. A collection of articles reporting the current evidence supporting the use of telemedicine in resource-limited settings would build the evidence base and should provide a focus for future research. It would also serve to raise the profile of this potentially important research field.
