Book Thornton s Medical Books Libraries and Collectors

Download or read book Thornton s Medical Books Libraries and Collectors written by John Leonard Thornton and published by Gower Publishing Company, Limited. This book was released on 1990 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the standard work on the production, distribution and storage of medical literature from the earliest times. This third edition, edited by Alain Besson, is in keeping with the author's original intention and retains the basic structure of the first two editions. A new team of contributors have each provided chapters on their specialized subject to ensure a wide-ranging but detailed study. The opening chapter 'Medical Books before the Invention of Printing' now focuses on the production and transmission of medical manuscripts in the West, instead of giving a shallow treatment to the entire field of manuscript studies.

Book Rhinoplasty and the nose in early modern British medicine and culture

Download or read book Rhinoplasty and the nose in early modern British medicine and culture written by Emily Cock and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging histories of plastic surgery that posit a complete disappearance of Gaspare Tagliacozzi’s rhinoplasty operation after his death in 1599, Rhinoplasty and the nose in early modern British medicine and culture traces knowledge of the procedure within the early modern British medical community, through to its impact on the nineteenth-century revival of skin-flap facial surgeries. The book explores why such a procedure was controversial, and the cultural importance of the nose, offering critical readings of literary noses from Shakespeare to Laurence Sterne. Medical knowledge of the graft operation was accompanied by a spurious story that the nose would be constructed from flesh purchased from a social inferior, and would drop off when that person died. The volume therefore explores this narrative in detail for its role in the procedure’s stigmatisation, its engagement with the doctrine of medical sympathy, and its unique attempt to commoditise living human flesh.

  • Author : Brian Cowan
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2008-10-01
  • ISBN : 0300133502
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book The Social Life of Coffee written by Brian Cowan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What induced the British to adopt foreign coffee-drinking customs in the seventeenth century? Why did an entirely new social institution, the coffeehouse, emerge as the primary place for consumption of this new drink? In this lively book, Brian Cowan locates the answers to these questions in the particularly British combination of curiosity, commerce, and civil society. Cowan provides the definitive account of the origins of coffee drinking and coffeehouse society, and in so doing he reshapes our understanding of the commercial and consumer revolutions in Britain during the long Stuart century. Britain’s virtuosi, gentlemanly patrons of the arts and sciences, were profoundly interested in things strange and exotic. Cowan explores how such virtuosi spurred initial consumer interest in coffee and invented the social template for the first coffeehouses. As the coffeehouse evolved, rising to take a central role in British commercial and civil society, the virtuosi were also transformed by their own invention.
