Download or read book The Baths of Acqui written by Alessandro Martini and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The great future ambitions of Acqui, a European spa city, are rooted in its history, of which this book tells the story. As in other localities that were made famous (and attractive) by their thermal waters, it is the spa that has given rise to its economic well-being and, especially, to its historical identity and memory. Centuries of use of its curative mud and waters brought with it great buildings for accommodation and treatment, though the city truly took off in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. However, unlike many international centres of relaxation and recreation, Acqui has always been a place more for treatment than for leisure. Though never built, the architectural designs of the 1920s were extraordinary in terms of their spatial and design solutions, and still today they point to an age of enormous ambition, accompanied by a grand vision for the city and its spa system. A vision in which the city believes as much today as ever before."--Publisher.

Download or read book The Secrets of Rome written by Corrado Augias and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Italy's popular author Corrado Augias comes the most intriguing exploration of Rome ever to be published. In the mold of his earlier histories of Paris, New York, and London, Augias moves perceptively through twenty-seven centuries of Roman life, shedding new light on a cast of famous, and infamous, historical figures and uncovering secrets and conspiracies that have shaped the city without our ever knowing it. From Rome's origins as Romulus's stomping ground to the dark atmosphere of the Middle Ages; from Caesar's unscrupulousness to Caravaggio's lurid genius; from the notorious Lucrezia Borgia to the seductive Anna Fallarino, the marchioness at the center of one of Rome's most heinous crimes of the post-war period, Augias creates a sweeping account of the passions that have shaped this complex city: at once both a metropolis and a village, where all human sentiment-bravery and cowardice, industriousness and sloth, enterprise and laxity-find their interpreters and stage. If the history of humankind is all passion and uproar, then, as the author notes, "for centuries Rome has been the mirror of this history, reflecting with excruciating accuracy every detail, even those that might cause you to avert your gaze."

Download or read book History of the Restoration and Conservation of Works of Art written by Alessandro Conti and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At times controversial and uncompromising, always intellectually honest, Alessandro Conti's book is - astonishingly - the only attempt to comprehensively chart in time, the changing impact of man's desire to preserve for future generations the materials, meaning and appearances of works of art. Remarkable in its meticulous research of source material and breadth of scope, History of the Restoration and Conservation of Works of Arts, translated by Helen Glanville, charts the practices and underlying philosophies of conservation and 'restored' works of art from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century. In English-speaking countries, a lack of foreign language skills leaves many unable to consult a wealth of both published and unpublished historical documentation. Developments in conservation have therefore tended toward the scientific and analytical. Access to such documentation leads to better understanding of the present appearance of works of art and of their changing aspect and perception over time. Recent publications indicate that there is a great need for people writing on the subject to be aware of material which is not in their mother tongue: approaches presented as 'new' are in fact merely 'contemporary', and have been discussed or practiced in other centuries and countries. Just as knowledge of practices and effects of art conservation and restoration should form an integral part of History of Art Degrees, the more theoretic, abstract and historical aspects, should also be part of the training. This book is an invaluable source for academic and public institutions, art historians as well as practicing conservators and lovers of art.

Download or read book Elias Sime written by Tracy L. Adler and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first-ever monograph featuring the work of the Ethiopian artist Elias Sime, who brilliantly explores the impact of life in a post-consumerist world. Sime's brightly-colored sculptural tableaus feature found objects including thread, buttons, electrical wires, and computer detritus. This book highlights the artist's work from the last decade, much of which comprises the series entitled "Tightrope." Repurposing salvaged electronic components, such as circuits and keyboards, Sime incorporates the refuse that are the byproducts of technological advancement, and points to the urgency of sustainability. The resulting abstractions reference landscape and the figure as well as traditional Ethiopian textiles. "Tightrope" refers to the precarious balance between the progress technology has made possible and its detrimental impact on the environment. Published with the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art
Download or read book Arab Paper written by Joseph von Karabacek and published by Archetype Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bibliophiles in Europe at the end of the nineteenth century began to take a serious interest in the manuscripts of the Middle East and the paper on which they were written. Perhaps the most important of these men were C.-M. Briquet working in Geneva, and J. Wiesner and J. von Karabacek working in Vienna. All three were concerned with the burning topic of the moment: Was oriental paper made of cotton? Within the space of two years these three writers published seminal articles for the European study of Arab paper. Das Arabische Papier is one of those articles. The late Don Baker's inspiration to set about the translation and interpretation of this work was 'simply the desire to know the contents of this much quoted article'. Students, historians, curators, collectors, conservators and all those interested in the historical development and spread of papermaking will realise why Don Baker wished to make this important text available to English readers. This Archetype edition is a revised edition of the volume, which Don Baker produced in 1991.
