Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although manual labour and theoretical invention might now seem separate ventures, history teaches us that they are closely linked processes. The Mindful Hand explores innovative areas of European society between the late Renaissance and the period of early industrialisation where the enterprise of knowledge and production relied on the most intimate connexions of thought and toil. This volume explains how philosophers and labourers collaborated in an environment where artisans and instrument-makers, administrators and entrepreneurs simultaneously pioneered technical change alongside knowledge formation. The essays gathered here help show how these projects were pursued together, yet why, in retrospect, the very categories of science and technology emerged as seemingly distinct endeavors.

Book Fairs and Markets in the Roman Empire

Download or read book Fairs and Markets in the Roman Empire written by L. de Ligt and published by Dutch Monographs on Ancient Hi. This book was released on 1993 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodic markets are institutions of crucial importance in all pre-industrial economies. Yet the subject has been given little atten-tion by Roman historians. The aim of this book is to remedy this state of affairs through an empire-wide study of annual, bi-annual, monthly and 'weekly' markets. The method used involves the interpretation of the ancient evidence in terms of economic and anthropo-logical theory and against the background of comparative data. Dr de Ligt starts by demonstrat-ing the continued importance of local and regional fairs throughout the im-perial period. Special attention is devoted to the role of both annual fairs and high-frequency periodic markets in the rural economy. In the second half of the book the scope of the discussion is extended to social and political aspects. Finally, the book addresses such topics as urban resistance towards neighbouring rural markets and the widespread practice of waiving customs duties for the duration of largescale religious festivals.

Download or read book Belchertown written by Doris M. Dickinson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belchertown, a photographic celebration of small-town life in western Massachusetts, depicts the story of the community from its settlement to the 1960s. An industrious group, Belchertown residents worked to establish shops, work fields, and manufacture carriages in the early years. The town was once known as the Detroit of the carriage industry. These labors and the benefits they generated are illustrated in this exciting new book. Despite changes in the transportation industry that made Belchertown increasingly accessible by trains and later by cars, residents succeeded in preserving the municipality's small-town character. Through the opening and the closing of the Belchertown State School and the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir, the town remained a comfortable haven from the hustle and bustle of city life. Residents enjoyed doing business in town, attending local schools, churches, and civic organizations, and gathering together for the celebrated Belchertown Fair. The 200 vintage images in this book, primarily selected from the extensive photograph collection housed at the Stone House Museum of the Belchertown Historical Association, depict the idyllic nature of life in Belchertown through the years.

Book The 10th P W O Royal Hussars and The Essex Yeomanry

Download or read book The 10th P W O Royal Hussars and The Essex Yeomanry written by Lt Col F.H.D.C. Whitmore and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Regular cavalry regiment and a Territorial Yeomanry regiment make strange bedfellows in a combined regimental history, but this is the work of an officer who commanded both during the war and felt the need to make a record of the incidents which united the Regiments in close friendship during the Great War. Whitmore was a Territorial officer, not a Regular, and his appointment to command a regular cavalry regiment must have been a unique one; there were only twenty-five cavalry of the line regiments on the Western Front and competition for command among career officers would have been keen. Furthermore he was recommended to the command of the 10th Hussars by the Cavalry Corps commander, Lieut-General Sir Charles Kavanagh, who was himself a former CO of the Regiment. The Hussars landed at Ostend in October 1914, the Essex at Havre on 1 December 1914 and both regiments served in 8th Cavalry Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division, till April 1918 when the Essex were broken up, at which point Whitmore, who had been CO of the Essex since November 1915, was posted to command 10th Hussars where he remained till March 1919. This account is not in the form of a personal memoir but rather that of an impersonal, wartime regimental history in which the activities of both regiments are fused into the one narrative set out in chronological order. There is a wealth of information in the appendices which are arranged for each Regiment separately: Diary of movements; Roll of officers who served showing when they joined and when they left and whether they were casualties and, in the case of the Essex; where they went; Honours and Awards; list of casualties showing killed, wounded or missing. There are also two appendices showing Order of Battle, one giving names of Cavalry Corps, Division and Brigade commanders with dates, and the other giving the composition of the Cavalry Divisions and Brigades. There is an index. This is a gift for researchers, genealogists and medallists.

Book Best of S J Perelman

  • Author : S. J. Perelman
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2017-08-07
  • ISBN : 9781974296231
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book Best of S J Perelman written by S. J. Perelman and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any consideration of S. J. Perelman-and S. J. Perelman certainly deserves the same consideration one accords old ladies on street cars, babies traveling unescorted on planes, and the feeble-minded generally-it is important to remember the crushing, the well-nigh intolerable odds under which the man has struggled to produce what may well be, in the verdict of history, the most picayune prose ever produced in America. Denied every advantage, beset and plagued by ill fortune and a disposition so crabbed as to make Alexander Pope and Dr. Johnson seem sunny by contrast, he has nevertheless managed to belt out a series of books each less distinguished than its predecessor, each a milestone of bombast, conceit, pedantry, and strutting pomposity. In his pages proliferate all the weird grammatical flora tabulated by H. W. Fowler in his Modem English Usage-the Elegant Variation, the Facetious Zeugma, the Cast-iron Idiom, the Battered Ornament, the BowerVBird Phrase, the Sturdy Indefensible, the Side-Slip, and the Unequal Yokefellow. His work is a museum of mediocrity, a monument to the truly banal. What Flaubert did to the French bourgeois in Bouvard and Pecuchet, what Pizarro did to the Incas, what Jack Dempsey did to Paolino Uzcudun, S. J. Perelman has done to American belles-lettres.
