Book Attitudes Toward Sex Among Male College Students

Download or read book Attitudes Toward Sex Among Male College Students written by Eunice Reyes and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acceptance of rape myths is a prevalent issue in U.S. society. Research suggests that rape myth acceptance is greater among men compared to women. So, this study sought to understand the relationship between conformity to hegemonic masculinity and acceptance of male rape myths among male university students. This study also analyzed the influence of media, interpersonal communication, and sexual violence support services in shaping perceptions about masculinity and male rape myths. In an online survey involving male students from one mid-sized Midwestern university, conformity to four dimensions of hegemonic masculinity were found to be related to acceptance of male rape myths: self-reliance, violence, power over women, and disdain for homosexuality. The findings of this study indicate that media is generally not influential in shaping male university students' perceptions of masculinity and acceptance of male rape myths, with the exception of streaming services. Interpersonal communication was not related to acceptance of male rape myths, but certain social groups were influential in shaping perceptions of masculinity. This study also found that only one support service included in the survey was influential in reducing acceptance of male rape myths.

Book Premarital Sex Attitude and Behavior Among College Students

Download or read book Premarital Sex Attitude and Behavior Among College Students written by Ramesh Adhikari and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nepal, as in other Asian countries, the issue of sexuality still remains a taboo. Despite this fact, an increasing number of sexual activities is being reported by Nepalese students. The main objectives of the study are to examine students' attitudes toward premarital sexual relationship and to assess students' prevalence of premarital sexual intercourse. A large variation in attitude regarding female and male virginity at marriage was observed by sex. Boys have liberal attitude towards female and male virginity at marriage. Acceptance of premarital sex was less prevalent among girls than boys. The study found that individual, family and peer characteristics had the main effects on premarital sex. Despite strong social and cultural taboos, college students in Nepal are not only involved in premarital sex but also in risky sexual behavior. Young people are exposed to health hazards due to their sexual behavior; hence sex education should be provided. School or college based sexuality education could benefit even out-of-school youths, because their partners often are students.

Book The Sex Lives of College Students

Download or read book The Sex Lives of College Students written by Sandra L Caron and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third edition of The Sex Lives of College Students results are presented of more than a 100-question human sexuality survey administered over the past three decades (from 1990 to 2020) to thousands of college students ages 18-22. The goal is to better understand their sexual attitudes and behaviors, as well as trends. The findings raise awareness and provide perspective about students' understanding of sex matters and related difficult issues, and tell us we still have a long way to go before people own their sexuality. The survey reinforces the fact that young adults are generally comfortable pursuing sexual relationships, but often fail to openly discuss sexual issues. Some of the results suggest that the double standard is alive and well, as when more college women than men say that love is important in sex. The Sex Lives of College Students provides a springboard for honest dialogue about the role of sexuality in people's lives and a forum for more public discussion of private parts.

With essays by a wide range of knowledgeable contributors, Sex in College: The Things They Don't Write Home About draws on recent research to examine just about every aspect of its intriguing subject. The book begins with general chapters that offer historical, cross-cultural, and theoretical perspectives on college students' sexual attitudes and behaviors. One chapter offers a framework for understanding the unique developmental perspective of young adults. Another chapter explores the research methods used to study college students' sexual practices. Subsequent chapters cover: dating and intimacy on campus, the perspective of young adults about love, sexuality education and classes, and sexual orientation. The darker side of college sexuality is also examined in chapters centering on such topics as infidelity in college dating relationships, homophobia and sexual harassment on campus, sexual risk-taking and sexually transmitted infections, sexual problems and dysfunction among young adults, and sexual assault among college students.

Book Male Privilege Sexual Double Standard and Sexual Scripts

Download or read book Male Privilege Sexual Double Standard and Sexual Scripts written by Mary Ellen Hunt and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately three-fourths of young adults in college hook up at least once by their senior year (i.e., engage in a casual sexual encounter outside the context of a committed relationship). There are important gender differences which may inform how men and women conceptualize hooking up. Men and women may have different predictors of interest, expectations of sex, or attitudes toward sex. These gender differences are likely culturally constructed by the sexual double standard and traditional sexual scripts which project men to be the aggressive sexual initiators who want sex all the time, and women to be passive gatekeepers who desire sex only within an emotional relationship. However, these sexual roles and scripts may not hold true for all men and women. In previous research, men have suggested that their level of interest in a potential partner (short-term verses long-term) is influenced by the amount of "respect" they have for their potential partner. In these preliminary findings, men report being more likely to have long-term interest in women who do not have sex with them on the first few encounters because it fosters respect. Additionally, men report they would not push women that they respect to have sex if they indicated refusal. Women realize this issue of respect and have learned to withhold certain sexual activity if they have long-term interest in the man. These levels of interest may influence how men negotiate sex which, in turn, influences consent cues. Men's ability to interpret consent cues and disregard refusal based on levels of interest is a concept that has not been explored thoroughly in the literature, especially from the perspective of both genders. The current study will examine how levels of interest influence sexual decision-making in casual encounters by examining interview data previously collected in regard to consent negotiation, as well as by collecting additional open-ended narratives from college students to contribute to two separate manuscripts. Based on the gender differences in conceptualizations of hooking up, it is hypothesized that levels of interest will influence sexual decision-making differently by gender.

Book Queers Bis and Straight Lies

Download or read book Queers Bis and Straight Lies written by Meredith G. F. Worthen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though there have been great advances for LGBTQ people in recent years, stigma, intolerance, and prejudice remain. Queers, Bis, and Straight Lies: An Intersectional Examination of LGBTQ Stigma offers an in-depth exploration of LGBTQ negativity through its ground-breaking use of Norm-Centered Stigma Theory (NCST), the first ever theory about stigma that is both testable and well-positioned in existing stigma scholarship. Based on research with more than 3,000 respondents, hetero-cis-normativity and intersectionality are highlighted as fundamental in understanding separate but interconnected discussions about LGBTQ individuals’ experiences with discrimination, harassment, and violence. With chapters dedicated to lesbian women, gay men, bisexual women, bisexual men, trans women, trans men, non-binary/genderqueer people, queer women, and queer men, Queers, Bis, and Straight Lies brings together empirically-driven findings that work toward dismantling "straight lies" in an innovative and impactful manner. Through its novel and critical approach, Queers, Bis, and Straight Lies is the ideal resource for those who want to learn about LGBTQ stigma more broadly and for those who seek a nuanced, theory-driven, and intersectional examination of how LGBTQ prejudices and prejudicial experiences differ by gender identity, sexual identity, race/ethnicity, and class.

Book Health and Well Being in Islamic Societies

Download or read book Health and Well Being in Islamic Societies written by Harold G. Koenig and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first hospitals to pioneering pharmacy techniques, the early history of medicine reflects the groundbreaking contributions of Islamic physicians and scientists. Less recognized, however, is the impact of Islam on the health and daily health practices of modern day Muslims. Meticulously documented with current research sources and relevant religious texts, Health and Well-Being in Islamic Societies sheds light on the relationships between Muslim beliefs and physical, psychological, and social health. Background chapters trace Muslim thought on health and healing as it has evolved over the centuries to the present. The authors provide even-handed comparisons with Christianity as the two traditions approach medical and ethical questions, and with Christian populations in terms of health outcomes, assuring coverage that is not only objective but also empirically sound and clinically useful. And as the concluding chapters show, understanding of these similarities and differences can lead to better care for clients, cost-effective services for communities, and healthier Muslim populations in general. Included among the book's topics: Muslim beliefs about health, healing, and healthcare Similarities and differences between Muslim and Christian health beliefs Impact of religion on physical, mental, and community health in Muslims Understanding how Islam influences health Applications for clinical practice Implications for public health Cultural awareness is critical to improving both individual client health and public health on a global scale. Health and Well-Being in Islamic Societies is essential reading for clinical and health psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses, and will be informative for the general reader as well.
