This book was released on 2011-05-20 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is an excellent review of the development of self-care deficit theory and the use of self-care in nursing practice. Explanations of the various theories and theory terms are well done and written at a level that novice theorists can relate to. The authors demonstrate how self-care science can be fiscally and effectively applied to the care of patients/clients."--Doody's Medical Reviews Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Theory has been used as a foundation for nursing practice in healthcare institutions and as the basis of curricula in nursing schools for decades. This book explores the high-level theory of the application of Orem's Self-Care Theory, and how it can improve patient outcomes as well as cost-effectiveness of nursing care delivery. Written for nursing theorists, researchers, administrators, and graduate students, the text addresses the relationship of self-care theory and evidence-based care in nursing, and provides a solution to improving contemporary healthcare outcomes. The book is divided into three sections. Section one discusses the reason for the existence of the nursing profession, and identifies the performance of self-care. Section two covers three nursing practice sciences-wholly compensatory nursing, partly compensatory nursing, and supportive educative nursing. Section three offer suggestions on how health care organizations can incorporate this broadened perspective of what constitutes evidence based practice and on-going research methodology into every-day delivery of nursing services. Key Features: Includes case examples to illustrate the application of theory to nursing practice Provides a current, cost-effective resource for implementing Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory for effective evidence-based practice Builds the link between the application of Orem's Self Care Theory and improved patient and fiscal healthcare outcomes

Book Self Care Nursing in a Multicultural Context

Download or read book Self Care Nursing in a Multicultural Context written by Juliene G. Lipson and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1996-05-20 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As health care reform increasingly emphasizes preventative care and health promotion it is becoming increasingly important for individuals to attain and maintain good health. In Self-Care Nursing in a Multicultural Context, authors Juliene Lipson and Nancy Steiger seek to provide nurses and other health care professionals with the tools necessary to teach clients how to think through and decide how to take care of themselves and when to seek professional care, whether in health or in chronic or acute illness. This informative volume intersects two important issues in nursing--self-care and culturally component care. It proceeds from the premise that self-care is a powerful philosophical, biological, and psychological basis for nursing practice in a variety of settings. Cultural issues are stressed throughout the volume, including a section on cross-cultural communication and cultural influences on learning styles. The book is divided into four sections: the historical and theoretical aspects of self-care; the components of health such as nutrition, activity, and stress management; and the impact of self-care in light of health care reform, changing health care settings, and the concept of health communities. Health care professionals as well as students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels will find the volume imminently practical and relevant to their work.

Book Conceptual Nursing in Practice

Download or read book Conceptual Nursing in Practice written by Mary Fraser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1990 there has been considerable development in research in nursing practice which uses a model of nursing. This is due to many reasons. However, the aims of this book remain the same as for the first edition -to present the reader with current reports of studies in nursing practice which use a model of nursing as their base. I will also criticize the research methods that the studies use, to give the reader an indication of the credi bility of the findings, as well as commenting on the popularity of the model in different countries and cultures. A development that is possible since the last edition is the ability to give some indication of why the model of nursing was used; in other words what was the author's intention in studying nursing practice in depth with the use of a model. This will give some indication of the impli cations of the authors' work; I will develop this point further in the Introduction to this edition. Therefore this edition is not simply an updating of further studies published since 1990. Since the last edition there has also been some comment on the models that I included. I am grateful to Margaret Clarke (1991) and others who have pointed out that Neuman's model should be included, and there is therefore a chapter devoted to this in this edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no secret that compassionate care is at the heart of nursing. However, there is an outdated mindset idealized by many healthcare organizations that nursing includes self-sacrifice. In truth, nurses are in dire need of the ability for self-care to survive and thrive in today's healthcare environment. Accepting the unrealistic expectation of self-sacrifice serves no role in the nursing profession and devalues the very hub of the healthcare system-nurses. A Nurse's Medicine Basket: Tools for Compassionate Self-Care is intended to bring awareness and understanding to current and ongoing issues nurses experience as they practice the art and science of nursing. Within the book, voices of nurses from across the nation and various healthcare systems share their stories about self-care, which have greatly impacted their nursing practice -for better or worse. Ten timely nursing topics are discussed, emphasizing the value of self-care to support nurses in navigating the current healthcare environment. - The Golden Rule of Nursing: To Thine Own Self Be True- It's Not Always about the Paycheck- You Don't Know Everything...And You Never Will- Develop Your Voice-You're Gonna Need It- Build Up Your Team: Be The Type Of Nurse You Want To Work With- Ask For Help- Who is the Patient?- Compassionate Self-Care- Compassion for Management- Nursing LeadershipThe current climate of nursing has changed considerably since nursing's professional debut in 1860. The disconnect and imbalance of what is expected from nursing professionals and the reality of what nurses actually do has become a hot topic amongst nurses. A Nurse's Medicine Basket: Tools for Compassionate Self-Care provides thought-provoking context for advocating for and empowering the role of nurses as defined by true nursing practice. A must-read book for nurses, healthcare leaders, workplace managers, student nurses and nursing educators.Authored by a nurse with more than 30 years' experience across a variety of healthcare settings, A Nurse's Medicine Basket: Tools for Compassionate Self-Care demonstrates the correlation between self-care and higher job satisfaction, improved patient care outcomes, and stronger, more authentic working relationship with peers, managers and patients.

Book The Importance of Self care for Nurses

Download or read book The Importance of Self care for Nurses written by Jennifer Buchanan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of self-care is not a new one to the nursing community. It is something taught and implemented regularly in patient care. Nurses however, forget that self-care should play a role in their own lives as well. Studies have shown that nurses who practice self-care regularly are more compassionate and are able to give higher quality of care to their patients (Nahm, Warren, Zhu, An, and Brown, 2012). Holistic care is a highlight of nursing education and should be emphasized for the nurse as much as it is by the nurse. Nursing is a stressful career based around giving without much extra time to incorporate time for themselves. It can also be difficult for nurses to remember to care for themselves with personalities driven towards giving to others. The relationship between how one feels about themselves and how they feel about others is an important component of self-care practice (Silva Ferreira, Barcide Souza, De Oliveira Souza, Assis Tavares, and Da Silva Pires, 2015). Nurses should be able to feel positively about themselves and the work they do by replenishing themselves with self-care. This paper will examine a plan to incorporate self-care practices with the workplace. The hospital is the ideal environment to incorporate a safe place where nurses could take some time for themselves. Promoting the workplace to play a role in the wellbeing of their nurses also promotes a happier and more fulfilling place to work. Nurses deserve to replenish the giving nature they give out on a daily basis. Self-care is the answer nursing burnout, compassion fatigue, and disconnecting from patients and quality of care practices (Ulrich, 2013).
