Download or read book Atticus Greene Haygood written by Harold W. Mann and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1965, this biography of Atticus Green Haygood (1839–1896) reveals a man whose personal faith led him to become one of the foremost southern advocates of liberal racial policies. Born in rural northeast Georgia, Haygood attended Emory College at Oxford and went on to lead a distinguished career in the Methodist church, reforming church government, writing tracts on missionary work, and eventually serving as Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Haygood received national recognition for his work as an agent for the Slater Fund, an organization dedicated to supporting education for blacks, and for his controversial book Our Brother in Black, which outlined his views on racial issues. From 1875 to 1884 he served as president of Emory College where he continued his efforts of social reform.

This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 2849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Founding Fathers through the present, Christianity has exercised powerful influence in the United States—from its role in shaping politics and social institutions to its hand in inspiring art and culture. The Encyclopedia of Christianity in the United States outlines the myriad roles Christianity has played and continues to play. This masterful five-volume reference work includes biographies of major figures in the Christian church in the United States, influential religious documents and Supreme Court decisions, and information on theology and theologians, denominations, faith-based organizations, immigration, art—from decorative arts and film to music and literature—evangelism and crusades, the significant role of women, racial issues, civil religion, and more. The first volume opens with introductory essays that provide snapshots of Christianity in the U.S. from pre-colonial times to the present, as well as a statistical profile and a timeline of key dates and events. Entries are organized from A to Z. The final volume closes with essays exploring impressions of Christianity in the United States from other faiths and other parts of the world, as well as a select yet comprehensive bibliography. Appendices help readers locate entries by thematic section and author, and a comprehensive index further aids navigation.

Download or read book Liberty and Justice for All written by Ronald Cedric White and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the century between the "Emancipation Proclamation" of Abraham Lincoln and the "I Have a Dream" speech of Martin Luther King Jr., America sought both to rebuff and to redeem the promise of "liberty and justice for all." The story of slavery and the bloody civil war that abolished it has been told, but the story of the struggle for liberty and justice by and for African Americans in the half-century following the end of Reconstruction has been largely overlooked. In this highly readable narrative, distinguished historian Ronald C. White Jr. portrays the people, their ideas, and their ongoing struggle for racial reform in the United States from 1877-1925--a vital prelude to the modern civil rights movement and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Book Dictionary of American Religious Biography

Download or read book Dictionary of American Religious Biography written by Henry W. Bowden and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1993-04-13 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this award-winning reference, published in 1977, contained 425 biographical profiles of the most significant American religious figures. This new edition includes profiles for 125 additional people, and the earlier biographical sketches have been revised and updated. The volume includes religious leaders who died before July 1, 1992. Among its pages are entries for reformers, philosophers, social activists, doers and dreamers. While many of the people are mainstream, white ordained clergymen, many more stand outside traditional denominations and reflect the cultural and religious diversity of modern America. The result is a systematic overview of 400 years of American religion from the colonial period to the present day. Each profile begins with a capsule summary of the chief events in that person's life. The biographical essay that follows places the basic facts of the figure's life within the larger context of American religious history. A bibliography of the most significant works by and about the figure concludes each entry. Appendices at the end of the work categorize each individual by religious denomination and by place of birth.
