Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Gian-Carlo Rota The subjects of mathematics, like the subjects of mankind, have finite lifespans, which the historian will record as he freezes history at one instant of time. There are the old subjects, loaded with distinctions and honors. As their problems are solved away and the applications reaped by engineers and other moneymen, ponderous treatises gather dust in library basements, awaiting the day when a generation as yet unborn will rediscover the lost paradise in awe. Then there are the middle-aged subjects. You can tell which they are by roaming the halls of Ivy League universities or the Institute for Advanced Studies. Their high priests haughtily refuse fabulous offers from eager provin cial universities while receiving special permission from the President of France to lecture in English at the College de France. Little do they know that the load of technicalities is already critical, about to crack and submerge their theorems in the dust of oblivion that once enveloped the dinosaurs. Finally, there are the young subjects-combinatorics, for instance. Wild eyed individuals gingerly pick from a mountain of intractable problems, chil dishly babbling the first words of what will soon be a new language. Child hood will end with the first Seminaire Bourbaki. It could be impossible to find a more fitting example than matroid theory of a subject now in its infancy. The telltale signs, for an unfailing diagnosis, are the abundance of deep theorems, going together with a paucity of theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of seven papers related in various matters to the research work of Kostia Beidar†, a distinguished ring theorist and professor of National Ching Kung University (NCKU). Written by leading experts in these areas, the papers also emphasize important applications to other fields of mathematics. Most papers are based on talks that were presented at the memorial conference which was held in March 2005 at NCKU.

Download or read book Handbook of Incidence Geometry written by Francis Buekenhout and published by North-Holland. This book was released on 1995 with total page 1440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. This Handbook deals with the foundations of incidence geometry, in relationship with division rings, rings, algebras, lattices, groups, topology, graphs, logic and its autonomous development from various viewpoints. Projective and affine geometry are covered in various ways. Major classes of rank 2 geometries such as generalized polygons and partial geometries are surveyed extensively.More than half of the book is devoted to buildings at various levels of generality, including a detailed and original introduction to the subject, a broad study of characterizations in terms of points and lines, applications to algebraic groups, extensions to topological geometry, a survey of results on diagram geometries and nearby generalizations such as matroids.

Book excerpt: The theory of graph spectra can, in a way, be considered as an attempt to utilize linear algebra including, in particular, the well-developed theory of matrices for the purposes of graph theory and its applications. to the theory of matrices; on the contrary, it has its own characteristic features and specific ways of reasoning fully justifying it to be treated as a theory in its own right.
