Book Atomic Energy of Canada Limited

Download or read book Atomic Energy of Canada Limited written by George Lermer and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is the organization established by the Canadian government primarily for the purpose of commercializing the Canada Deuterium and Uranium (CANDU) nuclear reactor system. Reviews past performance of AECL, its weak organizational structures and inability to adapt to the world market, past political constraints and political outlooks influencing management practices, and failures of CANDU marketing. This study provides a new cost/benefit analysis in order to establish a measure of AECL's success and to provide a basis for considering further public investment.

Download or read book The Nuclear North written by Susan Colbourn and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first atomic weapon was detonated in 1945, Canadians have debated not only the role of nuclear power in their uranium-rich land but also their country’s role in a nuclear world. Should Canada belong to international alliances that depend on the threat of nuclear weapons for their own security? Should Canadian-produced nuclear technologies be exported? What about the impact of atomic research on local communities and the environment? This incisive nuclear history engages with much larger debates about national identity, Canadian foreign policy contradictions during the Cold War, and Canada’s global standing to investigate these critical questions.

Book Canada s Early Nuclear Policy

Download or read book Canada s Early Nuclear Policy written by Brian Buckley and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of nuclear weapons introduced a complex new factor into world politics, drawing a line through history and ensuring that international relations would never be the same. By both accident and design, Canada was a central player in the new nuclear era, as countries grappled with the implications of this revolutionary new development. Canada's decision, unique among pioneer atomic powers, not to acquire a nuclear arsenal has been used to buttress widely differing political agendas, while the factors that shaped the policy-making process have been largely ignored.

Book Medical Isotope Production Without Highly Enriched Uranium

Download or read book Medical Isotope Production Without Highly Enriched Uranium written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-06-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the product of a congressionally mandated study to examine the feasibility of eliminating the use of highly enriched uranium (HEU2) in reactor fuel, reactor targets, and medical isotope production facilities. The book focuses primarily on the use of HEU for the production of the medical isotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), whose decay product, technetium-99m3 (Tc-99m), is used in the majority of medical diagnostic imaging procedures in the United States, and secondarily on the use of HEU for research and test reactor fuel. The supply of Mo-99 in the U.S. is likely to be unreliable until newer production sources come online. The reliability of the current supply system is an important medical isotope concern; this book concludes that achieving a cost difference of less than 10 percent in facilities that will need to convert from HEU- to LEU-based Mo-99 production is much less important than is reliability of supply.

Book Canada the Provinces and the Global Nuclear Revival

Download or read book Canada the Provinces and the Global Nuclear Revival written by Duane Bratt and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world struggles to meet the growing international demands for electricity, green energy, and alternatives to fossil fuels, the nuclear power sector is experiencing global growth. Nuclear reactors are being designed and constructed at record rates, and Canada is joining the trend, with several provinces considering an expansion of their nuclear presence. Canada, the Provinces, and the Global Nuclear Revival critically examines Canadian nuclear policy in order to show how historic, environmental, economic, and political factors have shaped the direction of the nation's energy industry. Duane Bratt presents a comparative study of the Canadian nuclear sector - using a framework of interest-based coalitions - in its response to the global revival, analyzing nuclear development in Ontario, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. The book also answers fundamental questions such as: Has Canada seized international opportunities in uranium mining, reactor sales, and cooperation with other countries in nuclear research? To what extent has the industry been consolidated through mergers and acquisitions, foreign investment, and the privatization of crown corporations? A state-of-the-art exploration of Canada's place in the rapidly shifting world of electricity production by an acclaimed expert in the field, Canada, the Provinces, and the Global Nuclear Revival is a major contribution to the international nuclear debate.
