Book Angular Distribution and Altitude Dependence of Atmospheric Neutrons from 10 to 100 MeV

Download or read book Angular Distribution and Altitude Dependence of Atmospheric Neutrons from 10 to 100 MeV written by Alan Melvin Preszler and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The altitude dependence of atmospheric neutrons from ground level to 5 g/sq cm of residual atmosphere at neutron energies of 10 to 100 MeV is reported. Ground level measurements were taken at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on September 18, 1972. The other measurements were made during ascent and float on launch from Palestine, Texas on September 26, 1971. The intensity of both the downward and upward moving neutrons is maximum at about 100 g/sq cm of residual atmosphere. Neutron angular distributions are reported from 20 degrees to 80 degrees and 100 degrees to 160 degrees for 10 to MeV neutrons. Omnidirectional fluxes at altitudes at 5, 50, 100, and 200 g/sq cm residual atmosphere are in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations of Armstrong et al. in the three energy intervals of 10-30, 30-50, and50-100 MeV. Book Neutron Dose and Fluence Distributions in an Infinite Air Medium

Download or read book Neutron Dose and Fluence Distributions in an Infinite Air Medium written by George L. Simmons and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moments method is applied to the problem of calculating the neutron dose and fluence distributions in an infinite medium of air. These calculations are compared with Monte Carlo and Discrete Ordinates (S[subscript lower case]n) results. Simple parametric representations for the distributions are given which facilitate the calculation of dose and flux distributions in air with a different density.

Book Neutrino Physics in Present and Future Kamioka Water erenkov Detectors with Neutron Tagging

Download or read book Neutrino Physics in Present and Future Kamioka Water erenkov Detectors with Neutron Tagging written by Pablo Fernández Menéndez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-21 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the upgrade of the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector, which consists in the addition of a salt of gadolinium into the detector’s water, the goal being to endow it with a very high-efficiency ability to detect neutrons: the SuperK-Gd project. This will substantially improve the scientific value of the SK detector because, among others, neutron production is related to the matter–antimatter character of the interacting neutrino. In this book the authors develop several procedures for maximizing the impact of neutron tagging in various physics analyses involving a broad range of neutrino energy. They thoroughly study the impact of new backgrounds introduced by Gd in key physics analyses, most remarkably including the search for the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background. At GeV energies, the neutron tagging improvements are evaluated by performing a complete neutrino oscillation sensitivity study using atmospheric and long baseline neutrinos, with a focus on the neutrino mass hierarchy and the leptonic CP violation. In order to prove the relevance of neutron tagging with the available data, the authors apply the neutron-tagging tools developed here to the 4th phase of the SK detector, which is already capable of detecting a low fraction of the neutrons produced through hydrogen-neutron captures. A global oscillation analysis of the SK’s atmospheric neutrino data is also conducted.

Book Solar Neutrons and Related Phenomena

Download or read book Solar Neutrons and Related Phenomena written by Lev Dorman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Historical Overview In the 1940s, two phenomena in the ?eld of cosmic rays (CR) forced scientists to think that the Sun is a powerful source of high-energy particles. One of these was discovered because of the daily solar variation of CR, which the maximum number of CR observed near noon (referring to the existence of continuous ?ux of CR from the direction of the Sun); this became the experimental basis of the theory that CR’s ́ originate from the Sun (or, for that matter, from within the solar system) (Alfven 1954). The second phenomenon was discovered when large ?uxes of high energy particles were detected from several solar ?ares, or solar CR. These are the - called ground level events (GLE), and were ?rst observed by ionization chambers shielded by 10 cm Pb (and detected mainly from the secondary muon-component CR that they caused) during the events of the 28th of February 1942, the 7th of March 1942, the 25th of July 1946, and the 19th of November 1949. The biggest such event was detected on the 23rd of February 1956 (see the detailed description in Chapters X and XI of Dorman, M1957). The ?rst phenomenon was investigated in detail in Dorman (M1957), by ?rst correcting experimental data on muon temperature effects and then by using coupling functions to determine the change in particle energy caused by the solar-diurnal CR variation.
