Book The Geography of South Africa

Download or read book The Geography of South Africa written by Jasper Knight and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines contemporary directions in geographical research on South Africa. It encompasses a cross section of selected themes of critical importance not only to the discipline of Geography in South Africa, but also of relevance to other areas of the Global South. All chapters are original contributions, providing a state of the art research baseline on key themes in physical, human and environmental geography, and in understanding the changing geographical landscapes of modern South Africa. These contributions set the scene for an understanding of the relationships between modern South Africa and the wider contemporary world, including issues of sustainable development and growth in the Global South.

Book Meteorology of the Southern Hemisphere

Download or read book Meteorology of the Southern Hemisphere written by David Karoly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-03 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the circulation features of the Southern Hemisphere, both for the atmosphere and oceans. It includes observational techniques based on satellites, anchored and drifting buoys, and the research carried out at research stations in the Southern Hemisphere. The book was originally published in 1972 by the American Meteorological Society. It has been revised and updated in 1999, following the expansion of research bases and the development of research in the region at the time.

Book Sedimentary Coastal Zones from High to Low Latitudes

Download or read book Sedimentary Coastal Zones from High to Low Latitudes written by I.P. Martini and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world where the loss of sea ice and thawing of coastal grounds in the north, and renewed marine transgression and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events globally, are becoming commonplace. This volume presents a timely examination of coasts, the geological environment at particular risk, as global warming brings on this new reality. In 23 papers, low lying, mainly siliciclastic coasts are reviewed, described and analysed, under a variety of climates in quasi-stable tectonic settings along passive, trailing-continental edges from Polar Regions to the Tropics. Examples include coast of the Arctic seas, temperate to tropical eastern shores of the Americas, western Portugal, Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, South Africa and Australia. The entire coastal zone (landscape) is considered ranging from geophysical processes and products to biological entities including the adaption of Native People in various climatic zones. Knowledge of the state of the coasts now, and how the coastal plain has evolved since Late Pleistocene, is crucial for any realistic planning for the future.

  • Author : J. Harff

  • Release : 2016-01-05
  • ISBN : 1862396914
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Geology and Archaeology written by J. Harff and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea-level change has influenced human population globally since prehistoric times. Even in early phases of cultural development human populations were faced with marine regression and transgression as a result of changing climate and corresponding glacio-isostatic adjustment. Global marine regression during the last glaciation changed the palaeogeography of the continental shelf, converting former marine environments to attractive terrestrial habitats for prehistoric humans. These areas of the shelf were used as hunting and gathering areas, as migration routes between continents, and most probably witnessed the earliest developments in seafaring and marine exploitation, until the postglacial transgression re-submerged these palaeo-landscapes. Based on modern marine research technologies and the integration of large databases, proxy data are increasingly available for the reconstruction of Quaternary submerged landscapes. Also, prehistoric archaeological remains from the recent sea bottom are shedding new light on human prehistoric development driven by rapidly changing climate and environment. This publication contributes to the exchange of ideas and new results in this young and challenging field of underwater palaeoenvironmental investigation.

Book Climatic Change and Variability in Southern Africa

Download or read book Climatic Change and Variability in Southern Africa written by P. D. Tyson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history and mechanisms of climatic change in the southern hemisphere, with emphasis on southern Africa. The crucial question, one which affects the lives of millions, is what determines whether there will be rain or drought. Professor Tyson examines this problem first in the context of geologic history. He then discusses present-day circulation and the manner in which the atmosphere modulates wet and dry spells. He proposes a circulation model to account for paleoclimatic changes over the subcontinent during the last 25 millenia. The material presented here represents research accumulated over a period of 17 years. Nothing similar exists for any country in the southern hemisphere.
