Book Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology

Download or read book Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology written by Roger G. Barry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology provides the first comprehensive account of the dynamical behaviour and mechanisms of the global climate system and its components, together with a modern survey of synoptic-scale weather systems in the tropics and extratropics, and of the methods and applications of synoptic climate classification. It is unrivalled in the scope and detail of its contents. The work is thoroughly up to date, with extensive bibliographies by chapter. It is illustrated with nearly 300 figures and plates. *Part 1 provides an introduction to the global climate system and the space-time scales of weather and climate processes, followed by a chapter on climate data and their analysis *Part 2 describes and explains the characteristics of the general circulation of the global atmosphere and includes the nature and causes of global teleconnection patterns *Part 3 discusses synoptic weather systems in the extratropics and tropics and satellite-based climatologies of synoptic features. It also describes the applications of synoptic climatology and summarises current climatic research and its directions.

Book Interaction of Geophysical Processes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres in the Problem of Total Atmospheric Circulation

Download or read book Interaction of Geophysical Processes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres in the Problem of Total Atmospheric Circulation written by E. P. Borisenkov and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this article the author continues to discuss the problem of the interaction of atmospheric processes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres which he began in connection with research in the area of atmospheric energetics. Data are given on the reserves of kinetic energy of the mean zonal flow in the atmosphere of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres during various seasons. It follows from the data that during the winter in the Northern Hemisphere the reserves of kinetic energy of the mean flow in both hemispheres are approximately the same. During the summer in the Northern Hemisphere there is a maximal contrast between the total reserves of kinetic energy of the zonal flow in the atmosphere of the hemispheres. It is also found that the recurrence of meridional forms of circulation in the Northern Hemisphere has a well pronounced maximum in May as could be expected if it is taken into account that during late fall in the Northern Hemisphere atmospheric processes are more intense than during the winter, and for the Southern Hemisphere April-May should be the period of greatest intensity. Book Long Range Forecasts of the Northern Hemisphere Anomalies with Antecedent Sea Surface Temperature Patterns

Download or read book Long Range Forecasts of the Northern Hemisphere Anomalies with Antecedent Sea Surface Temperature Patterns written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contract research has been conducted in the following three major areas: analysis of numerical simulations and parallel observations of atmospheric blocking, diagnosis of the lower boundary heating and the response of the atmospheric circulation, and comprehensive assessment of long-range forecasting with numerical and regression methods. The essential scientific and developmental purpose of this contract research is to extend our capability of numerical weather forecasting by the comprehensive general circulation model. The systematic work as listed above is thus geared to developing a technological basis for future NASA long-range forecasting. Kung, Ernest C. Book Weather Climate and Human Affairs Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Weather Climate and Human Affairs Routledge Revivals written by H. H. Lamb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, this is a reissue of a groundbreaking collection of essays written by Hubert Lamb, one of the world’s foremost experts on weather and climate and a uniquely authoritative voice in the history of climatology. Hubert Lamb is able to provide a mature assessment of the effect of weather on people, and vice versa. His is a uniquely authoritative voice in the current debates about today’s environment and the prospects for the future. After a general introduction the book is divided into three parts. The first part consists of a chronological series of portraits of climate and its impact on human affairs and the environment. These extend from the warm climates of the geological past to the current drought in Africa. There are several studies of the last few centuries and, in particular, of the various effects of the so-called ‘little Ice Age’. The second part is concerned with the causes and mechanisms of climate and weather changes, including chapters discussing Christmas weather, fronts and volcanoes. In the final part Hubert Lamb looks to the future, and attempts to put into perspective some of the pessimistic forecasts currently available. The text, which is consistently authoritative but always readable, is augmented by numerous maps, diagrams and photographs.
