Book Atlas of Monthly Mean Sea Surface and Subsurface Temperature and Depth of the Top of the Thermocline

Download or read book Atlas of Monthly Mean Sea Surface and Subsurface Temperature and Depth of the Top of the Thermocline written by Margaret K. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interim Atlas of the North Pacific and Adjacent Seas presents monthly charts of temperature for the sea surface and, for the first time, the subsurface levels at 100 ft. increments to 400 ft. The atlas is based, primarily, on bathythermography (BT) data collected at Scripps Institution of Oceanography during the past 29 years from U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships, and ships of scientific institutions. Book Sea surface Temperature Variability Analysis of Potential OTEC Sites Utilizing Satellite Data

Download or read book Sea surface Temperature Variability Analysis of Potential OTEC Sites Utilizing Satellite Data written by Fred M. Vukovich and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this research was to perform an analysis of the constancy of the sea-surface temperature in candidate locations for OTEC siting. Most in situ data available to determine the constancy of the sea surface temperature were obtained using point sensors that recorded surface temperature at specific points and at specific times or for some specific period. These data, while establishing certain gross or average patterns, are inadequate for describing short-term temperature variations for large areas and are insufficient for assessing the constancy of the temperature patterns relative to selecting potential sites for OTEC. The only data available for analysis of the synoptic ocean surface temperature pattern are those obtained in the last five years by infrared scanning radiometer systems on earth observational satellites. For this study, the satellite infrared (ir) data for the period 1973-1977 were used to identify and locate major thermal fronts at the sea surface. These data were then used to glean certain statistics on these fronts. In situ data were used, when available, to determine temperature difference across specified thermal fronts. This study was performed in three regional locations of interest to OTEC. The specific regions are: Region I, Eastern Gulf of Mexico (bounded by 22 N to 30 N and 91 W to the west coast of Florida including the Straits of Florida); Region II, the east coast of Florida (bounded by 23 N to 32 N and the east coast of Florida to 79 W); and Region III, Puerto Rico and vicinity, (bounded by 17 to 19 N, 64 to 68 W). Results are presented and discussed.

Book Atlas of Monthly Mean Sea Surface and Subsurface Temperature and Depth of the Top of the Thermocline Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea

Download or read book Atlas of Monthly Mean Sea Surface and Subsurface Temperature and Depth of the Top of the Thermocline Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea written by Margaret K. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large-scale temperature atlas of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea presents charts of mean monthly temperatures for the sea surface and five subsurface levels--30.5, 61, 91.5, 122 and 150 meters (100, 200, 300, 400 and 492 feet, respectively)--based on bathythermograph (BT) data supplemented by available reversing thermometer data. Included in the atlas are monthly topographies of the top of the thermocline, derived from the temperature fields. The Mercator base charts cover the area 10 degrees N - 35 degrees N, 060 degrees W-100 degrees W, and include, for contrast and comparison, the temperature fields in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans within these boundaries.

Book Evolution and Environment in Tropical America

Download or read book Evolution and Environment in Tropical America written by Jeremy B. C. Jackson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-12-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were the tropical Americas formed? This ambitious volume draws on extensive, multidisciplinary research to develop new views of the geological formation of the isthmus linking North and South America and of the major environmental changes that reshaped the Neotropics to create its present-day marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Recent discoveries show that dramatic changes in climate and ocean circulation can occur very quickly, and that ecological communities respond just as rapidly. Abrupt changes in the composition of fossil assemblages, formerly dismissed as artifacts of a poor fossil record, now are seen as accurate records of swift changes in the composition of ocean communities. The twenty-four contributors use current work in paleontology, geology, oceanography, anthropology, ecology, and evolution to paint this challenging portrait of rapid environmental and evolutionary change. Their conclusions argue for a revision of existing interpretations of the fossil record and the processes—including invading Eurasian peoples—that have produced it.
