Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The challenges of cytopathology are difficult to capture in a textbook; in reality, most melanoma cells do not contain pigment, air-drying artifacts alter cytomorphology, and benign respiratory cells may obscure lung carcinoma cells. Specimens of borderline adequacy leave one to question whether a definitive diagnosis can be made. Most cytopathology textbooks present us with ideal cells-the best cells photographed from the best specimens. In reality, these ideal cells may not be seen, nor are they required for a proper diagnosis. In many instances, ideal cells may even be insufficient for a diagnosis if not seen in a particular pattern or context. This atlas presents more than 1500 representative high-quality images. Rather than focus on obscure diagnoses, numerous images from frequently seen diagnoses are included to cover the different preparations, artifacts, and limitations seen during a cytopathology sign out. The most commonly encountered pitfalls are also provided, as well as advice on when and how to hedge"--

Book Atlas of Urinary Cytopathology

Download or read book Atlas of Urinary Cytopathology written by Syed Z. Ali, MD and published by Demos Medical Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exfoliative and instrumented (catheterized) urines are the most common types of specimens evaluated in a cytology laboratory. The typical clinical presentation is a patient with new onset of urinary symptoms, asymptomatic hematuria, or patient with prior history of urothelial carcinoma on routine surveillance. A careful examination of exfoliated cells from the urinary tract can lead to a fast, relatively simple, economical and accurate cytopathologic diagnosis, which is crucial for timely patient management. However, there are a number of common non-neoplastic reactive conditions that can morp.

Book Atlas of Non Gynecologic Cytology

Download or read book Atlas of Non Gynecologic Cytology written by Xin Jing and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cytology is a unique subspecialty in anatomic pathology, and plays a critical role in the diagnosis of a variety of benign and malignant lesions by using minimally invasive procedures, such as fine needle aspiration, brushing, washing and lavage. Cytology not only provides an accurate diagnosis of the lesion based on the cytomorphological evaluation at cellular level, but also provides material for molecular characterization of a tumor for targeted therapy. In the era of personalized medicine, cytology has continued to grow and evolve as an important diagnostic tool. For example, some types of procedures are routinely used, diagnostic criteria have become more refined, and certain terminology has been changed based on current WHO classifications. Therefore, it is necessary to update our knowledge and terminology in cytology. In this volume, we have retained the quality and the clarity of the series, and like the other volumes, this volume aims to be concise and comprehensive yet clinically relevant to daily practice. Although this volume is written by multiple authors, all chapters follow a similar format: brief introduction of the specific organ/system (including types of specimens and techniques to obtain samples), description of normal findings, and a practice approach to diagnose benign and malignant lesions. In each chapter, the key cytomorphological feature and main differential diagnoses of the lesion are summarized in a concise table. Images in each chapter are instructive and clearly represent findings. Where necessary, we have also illustrated the important ancillary tests, such as flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and molecular analysis, which are crucial for an accurate diagnosis and targeted therapy. The updated knowledge, including key cytomorphological features, current terminology and molecular diagnostic tests, is the highlight of this volume.

Book Diagnostic Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology

Download or read book Diagnostic Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology written by Roger A. Reichert and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In covering the topic of gynecologic and obstetric pathology, this book attempts to carve out its own niche midway between an atlas and a traditional textbook. The gross and microscopic images in this atlas are presented exclusively in color, and are supplemented by pertinent clinical information and discussions of differential diagnostic considerations. When deemed appropriate, images of immunohistochemical and special stains are included. To further enhance their visual appeal and the overall learning experience, many images in this book are presented with annotations and/or in composite form, and selected images have been enlarged. This image-intensive textbook also includes numerous Pap smear images and cytologic-histologic correlations. In addition to coverage of pathology of the organs of the female genital tract, brief overviews of the normal histology of these sites are provided as necessary background information. Separate chapters are also devoted to placental and peritoneal pathology. There is an emphasis on diagnostic-related issues pertaining to common lesions and their variants, although classic forms of rare lesions are also presented. In selected instances, recommendations on the processing of gross pathology specimens, discussions regarding the optimal approach for intraoperative consultations, and recommendations on the phrasing of key portions of pathology reports are provided. The 10 chapters of this book are organized by site, and the beginning of each chapter lists the entities discussed and their corresponding page numbers.

  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2015-12-29
  • ISBN : 0309377722
  • Pages : 473 pages

Download or read book Improving Diagnosis in Health Care written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the right diagnosis is a key aspect of health care - it provides an explanation of a patient's health problem and informs subsequent health care decisions. The diagnostic process is a complex, collaborative activity that involves clinical reasoning and information gathering to determine a patient's health problem. According to Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, diagnostic errors-inaccurate or delayed diagnoses-persist throughout all settings of care and continue to harm an unacceptable number of patients. It is likely that most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime, sometimes with devastating consequences. Diagnostic errors may cause harm to patients by preventing or delaying appropriate treatment, providing unnecessary or harmful treatment, or resulting in psychological or financial repercussions. The committee concluded that improving the diagnostic process is not only possible, but also represents a moral, professional, and public health imperative. Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, a continuation of the landmark Institute of Medicine reports To Err Is Human (2000) and Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001), finds that diagnosis-and, in particular, the occurrence of diagnostic errorsâ€"has been largely unappreciated in efforts to improve the quality and safety of health care. Without a dedicated focus on improving diagnosis, diagnostic errors will likely worsen as the delivery of health care and the diagnostic process continue to increase in complexity. Just as the diagnostic process is a collaborative activity, improving diagnosis will require collaboration and a widespread commitment to change among health care professionals, health care organizations, patients and their families, researchers, and policy makers. The recommendations of Improving Diagnosis in Health Care contribute to the growing momentum for change in this crucial area of health care quality and safety.
