Book Atlas of Igneous Rocks and Their Textures

Download or read book Atlas of Igneous Rocks and Their Textures written by W. S. MacKenzie and published by Pearson Education. This book was released on 1982 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion volume to the "Atlas of rock-forming minerals in thin section", this full-colour handbook is designed to be used as a laboratory manual both by elementary students of earth sciences undertaking a study of igneous rocks in thin section under the microscope, and by more advanced students and teachers as a reference work. The book is divided into two parts - Part one is devoted to photographs of many of the common textures found in igneous rocks with brief descriptions accompanying each photograph. Part two illustrates the appearance of examples of some sixty of the commonest (and a few not so common) igneous rock types; each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of the field of view shown. Nearly 300 full-colour photographs are included, and in many cases the same view is shown both in plen-polarized light and under crossed polars. A brief account of how thin sections can be prepared is included as an appendix.

Book excerpt: Inadequate observation of sedimentary TRUSHKovA and KUKHARENKO'S "Atlas of structures has been responsible for incorrect Placer Minerals." The most comprehensive interpretation of the order of superposition atlas is the "Atlas of Textures and Struc in deformed beds and this has led, in turn, tures of Sedimentary Rocks" edited by A. to gross errors in stratigraphy and structure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volumepresents current trends in the application of scientific methods to ceramicanalysis throughout South America. Reports from ongoing ceramic research in thearea capture the wide array of methods incorporated as a normal part ofresearch in most countries while reflecting national variation in their use andinterpretation. The volume also provides an opportunity to see parallels inresearch interests and results and thereby generate more internationalcollaboration. Despite the vibrant growth of archaeological science in theregion, increased opportunities for global comparative studies would lift ourwork into a more powerful arena of pressing popular discussions and afford moresalient relevance to our labours. Vessels Explored: Applying Archaeometry toSouth American Ceramics and their Production brings to an internationalaudience of scholars a new fresh look inside the current research problemsSouth American archaeologists are working on and how scientific analyses cancontribute to resolving them.

Book Crystal Identification with the Polarizing Microscope

Download or read book Crystal Identification with the Polarizing Microscope written by R.E. Stoiber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-08-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the simpler measurements of optical mineralogy are so precise and powerful that they give satisfaction to beginning students. Not long after mastering the strike and dip of rock surfaces with the Brunton compass, many geology students are able to determine precisely the identity of quartz, or the anorthite content of plagioclase, or the magne sium ratio of pyroxene with the polarizing or petrographic microscope, by means of measuring refractive index to better than one part in a thousand. Very little training and almost no theory are needed to achieve these skills. But there inevitably comes a time when theory is needed, either to get on with the art, or simply to reconstruct from first principles what is going on, when rote memory fails. In this book we hope to provide both the rote methods and the theoretical background for practitioners at all levels of experience. We draw from several careers-ours, our colleagues', and our students' -in teaching the subject at various levels of sophistication. Our book is intended to serve the needs of industrial and forensic scientists as well as petrogra phers who deal with rocks. Much of our treatment is based on new research, both in matters of presentation and in the optical determination of minerals and other materials.

Book Igneous Rocks and Processes

Download or read book Igneous Rocks and Processes written by Robin Gill and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for geoscience students taking introductory or intermediate-level courses in igneous petrology, to help develop key skills (and confidence) in identifying igneous minerals, interpreting and allocating appropriate names to unknown rocks presented to them. The book thus serves, uniquely, both as a conventional course text and as a practical laboratory manual. Following an introduction reviewing igneous nomenclature, each chapter addresses a specific compositional category of magmatic rocks, covering definition, mineralogy, eruption/ emplacement processes, textures and crystallization processes, geotectonic distribution, geochemistry, and aspects of magma genesis. One chapter is devoted to phase equilibrium experiments and magma evolution; another introduces pyroclastic volcanology. Each chapter concludes with exercises, with the answers being provided at the end of the book. Appendices provide a summary of techniques and optical data for microscope mineral identification, an introduction to petrographic calculations, a glossary of petrological terms, and a list of symbols and units. The book is richly illustrated with line drawings, monochrome pictures and colour plates. Additional resources for this book can be found at: http://www.wiley.com/go/gill/igneous.
