Book excerpt: NATIONAL BEST SELLER • The basis for the HBO documentary now streaming on HBO Max For five years, James and Deborah Fallows have travelled across America in a single-engine prop airplane. Visiting dozens of towns, the America they saw is acutely conscious of its problems—from economic dislocation to the opioid scourge—but it is also crafting solutions, with a practical-minded determination at dramatic odds with the bitter paralysis of national politics. At times of dysfunction on a national level, reform possibilities have often arisen from the local level. The Fallowses describe America in the middle of one of these creative waves. Their view of the country is as complex and contradictory as America itself, but it also reflects the energy, the generosity and compassion, the dreams, and the determination of many who are in the midst of making things better. Our Towns is the story of their journey—and an account of a country busy remaking itself.

Book excerpt: A decade before the American Civil War, James Churchwill Vaughan (1828–1893) set out to fulfill his formerly enslaved father's dying wish that he should leave America to start a new life in Africa. Over the next forty years, Vaughan was taken captive, fought in African wars, built and rebuilt a livelihood, and led a revolt against white racism, finally becoming a successful merchant and the founder of a wealthy, educated, and politically active family. Tracing Vaughan's journey from South Carolina to Liberia to several parts of Yorubaland (present-day southwestern Nigeria), Lisa Lindsay documents this "free" man's struggle to find economic and political autonomy in an era when freedom was not clear and unhindered anywhere for people of African descent. In a tour de force of historical investigation on two continents, Lindsay tells a story of Vaughan's survival, prosperity, and activism against a seemingly endless series of obstacles. By following Vaughan's transatlantic journeys and comparing his experiences to those of his parents, contemporaries, and descendants in Nigeria and South Carolina, Lindsay reveals the expansive reach of slavery, the ambiguities of freedom, and the surprising ways that Africa, rather than America, offered new opportunities for people of African descent.

Book Historic Hotels and Motels of the Outer Banks

Download or read book Historic Hotels and Motels of the Outer Banks written by Elizabeth Ownley Cooper and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1800s, wealthy farmers and businessmen began bringing their families to North Carolina's Outer Banks to escape the blistering inland summer heat. Soon after, the region's first hotel was built with accommodations for 200 guests. By the mid-1900s, hotels such as the Carolinian, the Nags Header, and the Arlington as well as smaller motels and cottage courts like Journey's End, the Sea Foam, and the Cavalier dotted the coastline. Most motels were independent, family-run operations. Many guests returned yearly, reuniting with the motel owners and other visitors. However, by the end of the 20th century, many of these mom-and-pop establishments had become a distant memory, lost to wrecking balls and replaced by large beach houses. This book recalls these hotels and motels and their impact on the Outer Banks and its visitors.

Book Mind the gap promoting a transatlantic revolution in military affairs

Download or read book Mind the gap promoting a transatlantic revolution in military affairs written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When American defense officials meet informally with their allies and friends from other North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries, the conversation often turns to the growing disparity in combat capability between European and U.S. forces. The problem is bemoaned, but the participants are not stirred to action. This is unfortunate. We need a cross-Atlantic debate that seeks feasible solutions to this problem. Mind the Gap responds directly to that need. It not only dissects the problem of a growing disparity but also rejects its inevitability. Instead, it lays out a multitiered strategy for its solution which is specific and practical, including processes and procedures for implementation. The proposed strategy is complicated and would be difficult to execute; it would raise questions and even objections. That is as it should be. The alliance, nevertheless, has solved larger, more complex problems. We urgently need to find a way to close the gap because the problem is getting worse. The United States continues to implement its vision of a globally mobile military force equipped with the latest technology. The European members of NATO are not investing in similar capabilities. As a result, the gap will widen and be increasingly difficult to close.

Book excerpt: Beyond DNA: Inheriting Spiritual Strength from the Women in Your Family Tree Who is your hero? Is she a politician? An actress or artist? Is she a spirited evangelist at your church? We all have strong, female role models that we look up to, admire, and respect; however, most of those role models exist outside the framework of our families. What about our own mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, and beyond? What heroic traits exist in our own hereditary lineages, and why aren’t we more aware of them? Author Selena Post spent seven years researching her ancestry; Beyond DNA: Inheriting Spiritual Strength from the Women in Your Family Tree is the culmination of her findings. Post looked at fifteen women in her lineage, and by observing their lives—and the historical events in the background—she was able to understand their spiritual strengths and weaknesses, as well as how both affected their lives and the lives of their offspring. It’s important to gain insight from those we know and love. Although not a guidebook for family tree research, Beyond DNA shows Post’s process as she discovered the inspirational lives of her ancestors. Post’s newfound knowledge changed her life and taught her how to live as a godly woman. What spiritual gifts exist in your family, and how will your legacy affect the young women to come?
