Book Atlantic Salmon Habitat Survey

Download or read book Atlantic Salmon Habitat Survey written by J. R. Semple and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dunbar Stream flows into the Nashwaak River, which then flows into the Saint John River at Fredericton. Salmon angling is considered good, but the increasing demand is nearing the point where supply is threatened. The habitat survey for Atlantic salmon was conducted from August 9-25, 1983, by walking the stream and recording water temperature, degree of shading, bottom composition, stream width and depth, and the extent of riffles, runs, flats, stills, and pools at intervals. Records were also kept of the numbers and kinds of potential predators of brook trout and juvenile Atlantic salmon and of complete and partial obstructions to migrating salmon. A quality classification for salmon parr nursery habitat was devised and spawning areas were classified also. This report presents the results of the survey.

Book In stream Habitat Enhancement for Juvenile Atlantic Salmon in the Little Main Restigouche River New Brunswick

Download or read book In stream Habitat Enhancement for Juvenile Atlantic Salmon in the Little Main Restigouche River New Brunswick written by Peter William Emerson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Boulder clusters were placed at three sites with small, homogeneous substrate in the Little Main Restigouche River in northern New Brunswick, Canada, in late summer 2005 to improve the rearing habitat for pre-smolt Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Population estimates were conducted at enhancement, control and reference sites between 2005-2007 prior to enhancement and for two years following enhancement to compare response of salmon parr. Age-2 parr density increased at enhancement sites following enhancement. During December 2005, a 25-year flood event and subsequent ice up and freshet in spring disturbed the study sites. A method was designed to interpret and rank boulder cluster stability degradation, and the data were compared with electrofishing estimates of abundance of salmon ages 0+, 1+ and 2+. Age 2+ parr abundance and biomass and age 1+ parr abundance were significantly higher at clusters ranked stable than at clusters ranked degraded."--Page ii.

Book Atlantic Salmon in Maine

Download or read book Atlantic Salmon in Maine written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the pervasive and substantial decline of Atlantic salmon populations in Maine over the past 150 years, and because they are close to extinction, a comprehensive statewide action should be taken now to ensure their survival. The populations of Atlantic salmon have declined drastically, from an estimated half million adult salmon returning to U.S. rivers each year in the early 1800s to perhaps as few as 1,000 in 2001. The report recommends implementing a formalized decision-making approach to establish priorities, evaluate options and coordinate plans for conserving and restoring the salmon.
