Book The Lumber Boom of Coastal South Carolina Nineteenth Century Shipbuilding and the Devastation of Lowcountry Virgin Forests

Download or read book The Lumber Boom of Coastal South Carolina Nineteenth Century Shipbuilding and the Devastation of Lowcountry Virgin Forests written by Robert McAlister and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The virgin forests of longleaf pine, bald cypress and oak that covered much of the South Carolina Lowcountry presented seemingly limitless opportunity for lumbermen. Henry Buck of Maine moved to the South Carolina coast and began shipping lumber back to the Northeast for shipbuilding. He and his family are responsible for building the "Henrietta," the largest wooden ship ever built in the Palmetto State. Buck was followed by lumber barons of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who forever changed the landscape, clearing vast tracts to supply lumber to the Northeast. The devastating environmental legacy of this shipbuilding boom wasn't addressed until 1937, when the International Paper Company opened the largest single paper mill in the world in Georgetown and began replanting hundreds of thousands of acres of trees. Local historian Robert McAlister presents this epic story of the ebb and flow of coastal South Carolina's lumber industry.

Book excerpt: Atlantic Beach, once a mecca for African American vacationers in Myrtle Beach and other East Coast communities during segregation, remains one of a few African American-owned and governed oceanfront resorts in North America. In 1934, George W. Tyson and his wife, Roxie Ballen Tyson, began purchasing and developing land in the area. The Atlantic Beach Company, which was comprised of doctors from North Carolina and South Carolina, continued this process from 1943 until 1956, and the tiny safe haven fondly became known as the "Black Pearl of the Grand Strand." Visitors came by the busload for the fishing, swimming, R&B beach music, and popular dancing among African Americans that later became known as the shag. Thousands of tourists continue to flock to the area on their motorcycles each year for the popular Memorial Day weekend BikeFest.

Book The South Atlantic Coast and Piedmont

Download or read book The South Atlantic Coast and Piedmont written by Sara St. Antoine and published by Stories from Where We Live. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace a line from Baltimore to Miami: that's an outline of the South Atlantic Coast ecoregion, more than one thousand miles long and as many as three hundred miles wide, from the coast to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Within these boundaries is a natural heritage as rich as the celebrated history of the South. What makes the Southeast unique? What are the plants, animals, and habitats that belong to this region alone? This book's stories, poems, essays, and historical accounts were selected to showcase the region's natural diversity and feature children as protagonists. Hear the call of owls in Atlanta, feel the thump of waves along the Florida coast, or the tug of a fishing line on Chesapeake Bay. With tales of building forts in Georgia, flying kites in South Carolina, fossil hunting in Virginia, and exploring the beach in Maryland, this book introduces the region's habitats, plants, animals, weather, and the people who have lived there. For newcomers or longtime residents. The South Atlantic Coast and Piedmont provides a memorable guide to the region, as well as a list of natural areas to visit. Book jacket.

Book The World of the Salt Marsh

  • Author : Charles Seabrook
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2012-05-01
  • ISBN : 0820343846

Download or read book The World of the Salt Marsh written by Charles Seabrook and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World of the Salt Marsh is a wide-ranging exploration of the southeastern coast—its natural history, its people and their way of life, and the historic and ongoing threats to its ecological survival. Focusing on areas from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, to Cape Canaveral, Florida, Charles Seabrook examines the ecological importance of the salt marsh, calling it “a biological factory without equal.” Twice-daily tides carry in a supply of nutrients that nourish vast meadows of spartina (Spartina alterniflora)—a crucial habitat for creatures ranging from tiny marine invertebrates to wading birds. The meadows provide vital nurseries for 80 percent of the seafood species, including oysters, crabs, shrimp, and a variety of finfish, and they are invaluable for storm protection, erosion prevention, and pollution filtration. Seabrook is also concerned with the plight of the people who make their living from the coast’s bounty and who carry on its unique culture. Among them are Charlie Phillips, a fishmonger whose livelihood is threatened by development in McIntosh County, Georgia, and Vera Manigault of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, a basket maker of Gullah-Geechee descent, who says that the sweetgrass needed to make her culturally significant wares is becoming scarcer. For all of the biodiversity and cultural history of the salt marshes, many still view them as vast wastelands to be drained, diked, or “improved” for development into highways and subdivisions. If people can better understand and appreciate these ecosystems, Seabrook contends, they are more likely to join the growing chorus of scientists, conservationists, fishermen, and coastal visitors and residents calling for protection of these truly amazing places.
