Book The Cambridge Companion to the Italian Renaissance

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to the Italian Renaissance written by Michael Wyatt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Renaissance in Italy continues to exercise a powerful hold on the popular imagination and on scholarly enquiry. This Companion presents a lively, comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and current approach to the period that extends in Italy from the turn of the fourteenth century through the latter decades of the sixteenth. Addressed to students, scholars, and non-specialists, it introduces the richly varied materials and phenomena as well as the different methodologies through which the Renaissance is studied today both in the English-speaking world and in Italy. The chapters are organized around axes of humanism, historiography, and cultural production, and cover a wide variety of areas including literature, science, music, religion, technology, artistic production, and economics. The diffusion of the Renaissance throughout Italian territories is emphasized. Overall, the Companion provides an essential overview of a period that witnessed both a significant revalidation of the classical past and the development of new, vernacular, and increasingly secular values.

Book The Yucatan From Prehistoric Times to the Great Maya Revolt

Download or read book The Yucatan From Prehistoric Times to the Great Maya Revolt written by Douglas T. Peck and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-07-29 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces an innovative and verified pattern of Maya history that follows the origin of the Olmec culture in Tabasco through its melding into and becoming the Chontal Maya/Itza of the Yucatan. The Yucatan has been the focal point and geographical crossroad of profound cultural, ethnological, and sociological change and development in Mesoamerica from ancient times to the present. This far-reaching and historically significant acculturation was brought about by two widely separated epic migrations and military conquests by foreign peoples bringing radically new, innovative, and advanced culture to the area. The first of these was the migration and military conquest by the Olmec/Chontal Maya/Itza from Tabasco bringing their written language, mathematics, architectural expertise, and religion into northern and central Yucatan. This golden age of Maya civilization, centered in the Yucatan, lasted for a millennium during which the advanced Maya culture flowered and spread south into Honduras and Guatemala and west into the highlands of Mexico. In like manner, the second migration and military conquest of the Yucatan by Spanish conquistadors also brought new and advanced cultural norms to the area. The history of the origin, development, and impact of these two momentous events constitutes the thrust of this book and is contrary to and challenges much of the currently accepted historiography related to the subject. Contrary to current consensus the book shows that the seafaring and mercantile oriented Chontal Maya/Itza from Yucatan were a populous worldly element of the Maya civilization who traveled and spread their cultural influence not only throughout continental Mesoamerica, but ventured across the seas to the islands of the Caribbean and to the shores of Southwest Florida in the territory of the Calusa Indians. Consistent with this accomplishment, they had developed naval engineering, Metallurgy, tool design, woodworking, and ship building capabilities that enabled them to construct the large composite seaworthy vessels (not just log canoes) required. And from their expertise in mathematics and astronomy they developed a sophisticated method of celestial navigation for their overseas voyages a millennium before celestial navigation was developed in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commemorating Juan Ponce de León’s landfall on the Atlantic coast of Florida, this ambitious volume explores five centuries of Hispanic presence in the New World peninsula, reflecting on the breadth and depth of encounters between the different lands and cultures. The contributors, leading experts in a range of fields, begin with an examination of the first and second Spanish periods. This was a time when La Florida was an elusive possession that the Spaniards were never able to completely secure; but Spanish influence would nonetheless leave an indelible mark on the land. In the second half of this volume, the essays highlight the Hispanic cultural legacy, politics, and history of modern Florida, and expand on Florida’s role as a modern Trans-Atlantic cross roads. Melding history, literature, anthropology, music, culture, and sociology, La Florida is a unique presentation of the Hispanic roots that run deep in Florida’s past and present and will assuredly shape its future.

Book Beyond Books and Borders

Download or read book Beyond Books and Borders written by Raquel Chang-Rodríguez and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La Florida del Inca (Lisbon, 1605) is a key text in the history and culture of the Americas. In this chronicle, its author, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, born in Cuzco, the son of an Inca princess and a Spanish conquistador, offers a unique representation of Hernando de Soto's expedition (1539-43) to the vast territory then known as La Florida. The studies collected here analyze the period of early contact in La Florida, study the chronicle of the Cuzcan writer and the works that influenced it, with the objective of affirming its central place in colonial, cultural, and transatlantic studies and its importance in understanding the intertwined history of the Americas. An introduction, a chronology, a general bibliography, and fifty-six images offer a frame for these sections. The various essays are written in a direct manner, and are free of jargon with the aim of attracting both general and academic readers. Raquel Chang-Rodriguez is Distinguished Professor of Hispanic Literature and Culture at the City University of New York.

Book Ruling the Waves

Download or read book Ruling the Waves written by Harald Kleinschmidt and published by Bibliotheca Humanistica & Refo. This book was released on 2008 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work Kleinschmidt is tracing the political implications of the transformation of the European world picture in the age of Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519). It is relevant for Renaissance political and cultural history. At closer inspection Maximilian turns out to have been a crucial though much underestimated figure in the context of the changes of the world picture during his time. Not only was he continuously and persistently involved in activities through which these changes were provoked. He also issued and authorized the most comprehensive sources relevant to the impact that the changes of the world picture had on politics and international relations. This work describes the exploration travels around the world, ordered by Maximilian, among which were the Portuguese expeditions to Ethiopia and India. The study proceeds chronologically in three parts, describing first (A) in brief the aspects of the emerging structure of territorial rule, concepts of universalism attached to the Roman Empire and the world picture during the Middle Ages, followed by part B which examines the changes of the world picture and Maximilian`s role (the Portuguese and Spanish Expeditions) in it. The last section (C) surveys the emerging of the new world order, the transformation of the Roman Empire as an institution of universal rule and the consolidation of territorial politics during the first half of the sixteenth century. (Bibliotheca Humanistica & Reformatorica, Vol. LXIII). 29 black and white illustrations.
