Nearly 135,000 Irishmen volunteered (conscription was never applied in Ireland) in addition to the 50,000 Irish who were serving with the regular army and the reserves on 4 August 1914. Within a few weeks of the outbreak of the war no less than three Irish divisions ñ the 10th (Irish), 16th (Irish) and 36th (Ulster) ñ were formed from Irishmen, Catholic and Protestant, who responded to Lord Kitchenerís call to arms. An estimated 35,000 Irish-born soldiers were killed before the armistice came in November 1918. Over 4,000 of those who died were with the 16th (Irish) Division. Yet, in spite of these facts, serious historical study of Irelandís major involvement in the War has been neglected. Indeed Easter 1916 dominates Irish historiography to such an extent that the period 1914ñ18 is rarely considered as a distinct era in Irish history.

In this book, the case of an illiterate general laborer, born in 1876 in Waterford city, who enlisted in the 16th (Irish) Division is used to study the motivation of Catholics enlisting in the British army and to assess the credibility of Casement’s judgment which, the book argues, is too simplistic. The decision to enlist resulted from a complex range of external social, economic and political pressures to which men were subjected during the course of their lifetimes. These are examined in detail and arguments are supported with graphs, charts, tables and numerical calculations. Book excerpt: The British army was almost unique among the European armies of the Great War in that it did not suffer from a serious breakdown of discipline or collapse of morale. It did, however, inevitably suffer from disciplinary problems. While attention has hitherto focused on the 312 notorious ‘shot at dawn’ cases, many thousands of British soldiers were tried by court martial during the Great War. This book provides the first comprehensive study of discipline and morale in the British Army during the Great War by using a case study of the Irish regular and Special Reserve batallions. In doing so, Timothy Bowman demonstrates that breaches of discipline did occur in the Irish regiments but in most cases these were of a minor nature. Controversially, he suggests that where executions did take place, they were militarily necessary and served the purpose of restoring discipline in failing units. Bowman also shows that there was very little support for the emerging Sinn Fein movement within the Irish regiments. This book will be essential reading for military and Irish historians and their students, and will interest any general reader concerned with how units maintain discipline and morale under the most trying conditions.

On that occasion however, there was to be no success, and instead an unmitigated disaster ensued resulting in both Divisions being decimated. In this fascinating account, the causes of the failure to exploit the undoubted success of the Messines offensive are examined in the context of being contributary factors to the delay, and underachievements, which marked the beginning of the Third Ypres Offensive. These include a general lack of urgency, misunderstandings, and a lack of clarity over tactical objectives at Command level, the mismanagement of Artillery, Tank and Infantry resources, and the failure to understand the geography of the battlefield. The delay that ensued enabled the German defenders to accelerate the construction of reinforced concrete bunkers and pill boxes which were to have such an important role in the outcome of the battle. The development and methods of construction of these defenses is analyzed in the narrative, as it assists in showing the extent of the German defenses faced by the Irish. The opening of the Third Ypres Offensive is investigated, as the failure to make a breakthrough on 31 July 1917, led to the unplanned relief of the attacking Divisions of XIX Corps by both Irish Divisions, as the 55th (West Lancashire) and 9th (Scottish) Divisions were exhausted by their experience. This relief ensured that 16th and 36th Divisions held the front line for two weeks prior to their attack on 16th August, in horrendous weather conditions and under constant German shelling. This led to all the attacking battalions being weary, and the majority under half strength, when the advance began. The day of the battle is examined in detail from the perspective of each of the attacking battalions, utilizing official histories, war diaries, maps, and personal accounts so that a coherent picture of the events of that fateful day are revealed for the first time in print. The Regimental Histories of the German defenders have also been obtained to establish the German perspective of the battle. Analysis of the severe casualties suffered by the Irish Divisions is included to emphasize the devastating nature that the Battle of Langemarck had on both Divisions and on many homes across the island of Ireland. The post-battle controversial comments of the Commander Fifth Army, General Sir Hubert Gough, concerning the performance of the Irish Divisions are analyzed in detail to prove that these comments were ill-advised and a poor attempt to deflect blame from the shortcomings of Fifth Army command. This valuable account highlights the bravery and tenacity of the Irish soldier in a battle where they were badly let down by the deficiencies of those in command of the British Fifth Army.
