It is a fantasy centered on a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind. Diamond is a very sweet little boy who makes joy everywhere he goes. He fights despair and gloom and brings peace to his family. One night, as he is trying to sleep, Diamond repeatedly plugs up a hole in the loft wall to stop the wind from blowing in. However, he soon finds out that this is stopping the North Wind from seeing through her window. Diamond befriends her, and North Wind lets him ride on her back, taking him on several adventures. Though the North Wind does good deeds and helps people, she also does seemingly terrible things. On one of her assignments, she must sink a ship. Yet everything she does that seems bad leads to something good. The North Wind seems to be a representation of Pain and Death working according to God's will for something good. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence".

THE HAY-LOFT I HAVE been asked to tell you about the back of the north wind. An old Greek writer mentions a people who lived there, and were so comfortable that they could not bear it any longer, and drowned themselves. My story is not the same as his. I do not think Herodotus had got the right account of the place. I am going to tell you how it fared with a boy who went there. He lived in a low room over a coach-house; and that was not by any means at the back of the north wind, as his mother very well knew. For one side of the room was built only of boards, and the boards were so old that you might run a penknife through into the north wind. And then let them settle between them which was the sharper! I know that when you pulled it out again the wind would be after it like a cat after a mouse, and you would know soon enough you were not at the back of the north wind. Still, this room was not very cold, except when the north wind blew stronger than usual: the room I have to do with now was always cold, except in summer, when the sun took the matter into his own hands. Indeed, I am not sure whether I ought to call it a room at all; for it was just a loft where they kept hay and straw and oats for the horses....

Book excerpt: As a poor cabbie and his wife eke out a meager existence in Victorian London, their little boy, Diamond—named after his father’s horse—is befriended by the North Wind. While Diamond learns much about life through his travels with North Wind, his visit to the country at her “back” proves to be transformative. As life in London grows especially hard, that moment provides Diamond with the resources to touch those around him with beauty and truth. Although At the Back of the North Wind was written for children, in it MacDonald deals with deep themes, especially the potential for suffering to be redemptive, and the meaning of death. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works on Christian apologetics including several that defended his view of Christian Universalism.

According to MacDonald's son and biographer Greville MacDonald, there are many similarities between Diamond and MacDonald's own son Maurice, who died young. Diamond seems to represent Christ, always trying to help others while not completely belonging to this world.

Book excerpt: A beautiful woman known as the North Wind blows through a small village in Victorian London, and everyday lives are mysteriously enveloped by power and glory. Along the way, she visits a poor stable boy named Diamond and takes him with her on her journeys. "At the Back of the North Wind" explores the place of death in our lives, social injustice, and our deep need for love and forgiveness. C. S. Lewis, author of the classic Chronicles of Narnia series, said of MacDonald, "What he does best is fantasy--fantasy that hovers between the allegorical and the mythopoeic. And this, in my opinion, he does better than any man. MacDonald is the greatest genius of this kind whom I know."

Book excerpt: Find Out Why MacDonald is Considered a Master of Fantasies These three most beloved classic Victorian-era fantasies of George MacDonald transport the reader to another time, real and imagined. At the Back of the North Wind is the tale of a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the mysterious spirit force, the North Wind. This captivating story of Diamond's radiant spirit in the face of the poverty and fatal contagions of the Victorian Age has served as an inspiration for generations. The Princess and the Goblin introduces us to Princess Irene, who lives in her father's castle near wild mountains-a land "full of hollow places underneath," where there lived a race of goblins banished by the King. Curdie, a local miner's son, is befriended by the Princess and, aided by Irene's magical great-great-grandmother, works to stop the plot by the goblins to take over the kingdom. The Princess and Curdie is set two years later, when Curdie is sent by Irene's mysterious great-great-grandmother on a mission to disrupt the enemies of the King as they plot to kill him. Together the old Princess and Curdie rescue the King and Princess Irene, and Irene and Curdie marry, peacefully ruling the kingdom for another generation. Author George MacDonald was a personal friend and mentor to Lewis Caroll, and also influenced the work of renowned fantasy authors C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkein, and Oz-creator Frank L. Baum. Although MacDonald explored a wide range of subjects in his varied writings, his children's classics remain the most popular, and are clearly written for the young at heart. With 121 illustrations. This book is also available from Echo Point Books in hardcover, ISBN 1635619173.

The loft is snug but drafty, and after plugging a hole in the wall one night, Diamond is scolded by the beautiful Lady North Wind for closing her "window" into his room. Thus begins their friendship. Spirited away by the North Wind, Diamond embarks on a series of adventures both near to and far from his home. His pure heart and his simple, loving spirit guide him as he journeys to the back of the North Wind and home again. Reviews "All metaphysic, theology, philosophy is as words signifying nothing compared to MacDonald's rendering of this tale. Part fairy story, part dream, poetry, apprehended here is a meaning of life and love such as you will not find in slmost any other book. The style is off-putting to some: tales within tales, a song here, a nursery rhyme there. But it is the story of Diamond, an angel child.who finds sanctification at the back of the north wind. Do you have anxiety justifying the trouble and triumph of life? Here in this book is an answer to ponder for a lifetime. " " I like George MacDonald's books very much, and this particular one because of its beautiful and dreamlike way to face life. "Some children are profound in metaphysics", he says at some point. This book contains also the fairy tale "Little Daylight", inspired in the Sleeping Beauty. My son enjoyed the story while it was happening, but didn't like the ending. He wants Diamond to return again from the Back of the North Wind." About Author George MacDonald was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was educated at Aberdeen University and after a short and stormy career as a minister at Arundel, where his unorthodox views led to his dismissal, he turned to fiction as a means of earning a living. He wrote over 50 books. Known particularly for his poignant fairy tales and fantasy novels, MacDonald inspired many authors, such as G.K. Chesterton, W. H. Auden, J.R.R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Madeleine L'Engle. Lewis wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his "master" "Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read.
